  1. Larry Clinton falls firmly into the category of "Trophy Record" so there will always be those that want it. meanwhile plenty of good unknowns which are as rare or rarer going cheap / unwanted....It's a funny old game.
  2. John Peel used to buy loads of soul records. Freddie Starr? Didn't he just walk into the casino because he was appearing next door? Not sure I'd call him a fan.
  3. There have been at least 3 maybe 4 up this year on the bay alone (not all on Popsike before anyone comes back). VG- ? Would you like some sizzle with your record sir?
  4. Hi Simon think 10s are quite novel, and I am sure they'll lok cool -only problem with them though is they won't fit in a singles box.
  5. But in answer to your question Len - after 5 pages . No it's not. I think there will continue to be people who are looking for new soul sounds, and people who are looking to go out and hear new sounds as well. Maybe not in an aircraft hanger, and maybe a smaller scene, but as long as we're going, we'll be doing it somewhere.
  6. But Geese there's always been collectors, you couldn't move at the bar at Wigan on many nights. Dancing isn't mandatory for goodness sake, and I say that as a collector who does dance. Post of the day for me. Bang on the money.
  7. The guy that did this is on here. So maybe he can answer some of these points? Steve
  8. Johnny on the Spot ffs? The other side ten times better - rock 'ard Detroit.
  9. I think this is a bit harsh Carms. I've not seen this type of behaviour at the venues I go to. Last one there was a newby there, we were friendly to him, made him feel welcome. One of me mates even gave him a lift home so he could stay later, seeing as he was vaguely 'en route'. Putting him in touch with some dealers, the promise of CDRs to follow etc. Those are the attributes of the soul scenes I typically see. Where are these places where people take the p*ss out of newcomers? That said, I don't really go to many oldies nights so can't comment on what happens there - to be candid a totally different scene to the one I am part of. Steve
  10. I was offered a Melvin Davis last year for £700. Already had it but.....it sounds a bit boring, to me it is really a collectors piece now rather than a DJs delight. Sorry for the abuse, I know it's a classic
  11. Is it your copy Ian? Are you "talking" the price up
  12. I don't think Richard ever played it.
  13. Yup other side is even better.
  14. No def earlier Benji.....maybe early 90s at the latest. I remember discussing it at one of the very first Yarmouths cos someone had brought a reissue thinking it was an original. Steve
  15. Hi there don't believe this is the same label as Stevens and Foster either. At least three Jerri labels that I can think of.....and agree a hefty price for an 1980s reissue.
  16. Can we have this imaginary Niter in something more intimate than an aircraft hanger or a big Victorian Town Hall wrestling arena type place. Smaller underground bar, decent floor, keeps it busy and the vibe going.
  17. Last lifeline floor was full for most of the night Tammy. Time before was quieter but hopefully it's onwards and upwards
  18. The trouble with prices guides is that demand changes very quickly on the scene. This is much more so than it is with other collectibles where everything is known and has a fairly accurate value which doesn't change THAT MUCH from one month to the next. And that is why you need to always have the latest edition with you. Some stuff - is now half book price and less other stuff double the book price. Confused.com Also worth mentioning that some very rare stuff goes cheap......it's all down to availability and demand as we all know. I think Pete's suggesting for subsequent sellers is fair and should ensure a quick sale. For every auction there is at least one person who didn't win who still wants the record.
  19. Hello Marc I still prefer the lockable box option.....rather than cardboard carriers you got to lug about with you. Don't acetates set off the x-ray machines? Did in Italy once. And as for security I reckon Kenny burrell's old chain and padlock must have weighed more than the 10kg ryanair allowance
  20. Wishing Keith all the best for a speedy recovery.
  21. Yes seen the trend meself. High Keyes was the latest example, before that the Volcanoes on Harthon. The auction is very clever, but it often only means two people are bidding against each other. Prices come back to reality soon enough on these not really rare items.
  22. Only ever DJed in the US once in 2001 as part of the Soul 24/7 party. We took it to 'em in Washington after 9/11. No problem whatsoever back then, we were welcomed.
  23. I don't take albums or 12s abroad 45s only Ian. Different scene I guess. Think Dave who asked the question isn't being asked to do a House / Techno set is he? Surely not? Walls of Heartache goes Y2K? I think if someone pitched up in Europe to do a northern / xover / funky gig with a bag of CDRs they'd be met with some suspicion..... As for knowing what tunes to take - yep have a pretty god idea of where you're going and what the crowd like. Ask the promotor if yer don't know, and also take some tunes that you believe in. That's a DJs job - to entertain, not to be a human version of a jukebox . The Europeans do dance to unknowns, and varied sets unlike so many here. That's one of the reasons we all love DJing there.
  24. Co-incidence Wrighty, the over zeleous guy that the people I was with was also in Germany and also Ryanair. They were basically told in the hold or they don't go on the plane......a horrid choice. It was hilarious having put the bag to one side to go in the hold, one of the dj's concerned then went back and retrieved it while the official was checking someone else's carry on weight.....you couldn't make it up. Ian I disagree. Playing CDs abroad? Honestly man, that's not what it's all about. Anyway 100 records is more than enough for any DJ. Jees me and Sam did between us some 8 hours in the Asturias one weekend with two 100 count boxes (we made sure we didn't take duplicates and "borrowed" each others copies of records we both had so a bit of planning was needed to sift out duplicates which took about 30 minutes the night before we went). We only played about 2 tunes on both nights, by request, and still had a few unplayeds left for an afterparty...... If you can't pack a box with a 100 for a 1-2 hour set something's not quite right. Never been taxed though have witnessed problems with security. Again Sam, some blokes started to go through his box post x-ray machine and were bending a Johnnie Mae Matthews to see whether it would 'snap' over the protestations of Sam "I'm a DJ, DEE JAY , records, Disques" etc. Meself and Ady lupton were told to move on out of the way....but it was all ok in the end. I'd also avoid taking acetates as well. Dave you'll love it!
  25. Something tells the the Brother Love is 77....can't remember why I think that now.
