Is The 'Upfront' Soul Scene Disappearing Up It'S Own A*se?
I think this is a bit harsh Carms. I've not seen this type of behaviour at the venues I go to. Last one there was a newby there, we were friendly to him, made him feel welcome. One of me mates even gave him a lift home so he could stay later, seeing as he was vaguely 'en route'. Putting him in touch with some dealers, the promise of CDRs to follow etc. Those are the attributes of the soul scenes I typically see. Where are these places where people take the p*ss out of newcomers? That said, I don't really go to many oldies nights so can't comment on what happens there - to be candid a totally different scene to the one I am part of. Steve

Mr Manships Auction Results 21-8-2011
I was offered a Melvin Davis last year for £700. Already had it but.....it sounds a bit boring, to me it is really a collectors piece now rather than a DJs delight. Sorry for the abuse, I know it's a classic

Tony Troutman On Jerri
No def earlier Benji.....maybe early 90s at the latest. I remember discussing it at one of the very first Yarmouths cos someone had brought a reissue thinking it was an original. Steve

Tony Troutman On Jerri
Hi there don't believe this is the same label as Stevens and Foster either. At least three Jerri labels that I can think of.....and agree a hefty price for an 1980s reissue.

Your Nighter Dj Line Up
Can we have this imaginary Niter in something more intimate than an aircraft hanger or a big Victorian Town Hall wrestling arena type place. Smaller underground bar, decent floor, keeps it busy and the vibe going.

Last lifeline floor was full for most of the night Tammy. Time before was quieter but hopefully it's onwards and upwards

Auctions Changing The Dynamic Of Collecting?
The trouble with prices guides is that demand changes very quickly on the scene. This is much more so than it is with other collectibles where everything is known and has a fairly accurate value which doesn't change THAT MUCH from one month to the next. And that is why you need to always have the latest edition with you. Some stuff - is now half book price and less other stuff double the book price. Confused.com Also worth mentioning that some very rare stuff goes cheap......it's all down to availability and demand as we all know. I think Pete's suggesting for subsequent sellers is fair and should ensure a quick sale. For every auction there is at least one person who didn't win who still wants the record.

Dj'ing Abroad
Hello Marc I still prefer the lockable box option.....rather than cardboard carriers you got to lug about with you. Don't acetates set off the x-ray machines? Did in Italy once. And as for security I reckon Kenny burrell's old chain and padlock must have weighed more than the 10kg ryanair allowance

Auctions Changing The Dynamic Of Collecting?
Yes seen the trend meself. High Keyes was the latest example, before that the Volcanoes on Harthon. The auction is very clever, but it often only means two people are bidding against each other. Prices come back to reality soon enough on these not really rare items.

Dj'ing Abroad
Only ever DJed in the US once in 2001 as part of the Soul 24/7 party. We took it to 'em in Washington after 9/11. No problem whatsoever back then, we were welcomed.

Dj'ing Abroad
I don't take albums or 12s abroad 45s only Ian. Different scene I guess. Think Dave who asked the question isn't being asked to do a House / Techno set is he? Surely not? Walls of Heartache goes Y2K? I think if someone pitched up in Europe to do a northern / xover / funky gig with a bag of CDRs they'd be met with some suspicion..... As for knowing what tunes to take - yep have a pretty god idea of where you're going and what the crowd like. Ask the promotor if yer don't know, and also take some tunes that you believe in. That's a DJs job - to entertain, not to be a human version of a jukebox . The Europeans do dance to unknowns, and varied sets unlike so many here. That's one of the reasons we all love DJing there.

Dj'ing Abroad
Co-incidence Wrighty, the over zeleous guy that the people I was with was also in Germany and also Ryanair. They were basically told in the hold or they don't go on the plane......a horrid choice. It was hilarious having put the bag to one side to go in the hold, one of the dj's concerned then went back and retrieved it while the official was checking someone else's carry on weight.....you couldn't make it up. Ian I disagree. Playing CDs abroad? Honestly man, that's not what it's all about. Anyway 100 records is more than enough for any DJ. Jees me and Sam did between us some 8 hours in the Asturias one weekend with two 100 count boxes (we made sure we didn't take duplicates and "borrowed" each others copies of records we both had so a bit of planning was needed to sift out duplicates which took about 30 minutes the night before we went). We only played about 2 tunes on both nights, by request, and still had a few unplayeds left for an afterparty...... If you can't pack a box with a 100 for a 1-2 hour set something's not quite right. Never been taxed though have witnessed problems with security. Again Sam, some blokes started to go through his box post x-ray machine and were bending a Johnnie Mae Matthews to see whether it would 'snap' over the protestations of Sam "I'm a DJ, DEE JAY , records, Disques" etc. Meself and Ady lupton were told to move on out of the way....but it was all ok in the end. I'd also avoid taking acetates as well. Dave you'll love it!

Dj'ing Abroad
I take a 100 box, in a bag, as carry on. It's under 10kg. Put other stuff in there and it goes over......only once seen it checked, when an over officious Ryainair guy pulled this pocket weighing machine out of his pockets and was insisting on weighong everyones carry ons. The DJs I was with had to put their luggage in the hold Anyway enjoy it Dave.....Steve

Is The 'Upfront' Soul Scene Disappearing Up It'S Own A*se?
Hi Rod, I can agree with a lot of this - as Mike says maybe upfront is a state of mind. One mans oldie etc. But Ive also said on other threads before that for the vast majority of people whatever music they like, they tend to stop appreciating new music in their early twenties. Same with Metal fans, C&W and Pop. Do a straw poll at work of the forty and fifty-somethings if you don't believe me. Watch em all scrambing onto the internet to get tickets as soon as "Take That" or "phil Collins" anounces another comeback gig..... Round these 'ere parts though there are most definately two scenes. Play underplayed oldies, upfront, label it what you like, and a lot of folk simply won't get out of bed. As I said you can't even mix a few in anymore. Play "Right track", Drizabone etc, and people will travel 100 miles to a night. Very few pork pie hats though. Good point from Geeselad about sounds filtering through, essentially there aren't any anymore and that's one of the reasons that I think (maybe not everywhere) there are two very distinct scenes now. It's like a parallel universe. Of course we all go out to enjoy ourselves, have a mash etc. I would have thought that's a given?

Have You Ever Bought The Wrong Record, Thinking It Was Something Else?
At Wigan in the 70s I bought "love games" A-Z by the Royal Jokers on Wingate thinking it was Willie Hutch Also i found Willie Hutch "Get ready for the get down" on Motown for 10p one lunchtime - I thought I'd uncovered Richard;s big cover up (ZZ&C0) and was over the moon until I got home. Needle hits vinyl - joy goes to instant disappointment. I also got the Al Johnson Marina LP in 1980 in London, thinking I'd found Bobby thurston "Just ask me" ......

Is The 'Upfront' Soul Scene Disappearing Up It'S Own A*se?
I am with Winnie on this. Maybe time for the upfront folk to cut their ties with the northern oldies scene. Seems a bit of "if I play some oldies as well the oldies fans will get into upfront stuff". That's true for some who like a bit of everything, but I don't think the majority of oldies fans ever will. Was talking to a well respected DJ at the weekend, and his observation was that at a local night he does the crowd dance to oldies but play something different and they all start to get upset going for fag moan breaks etc.. These folks ain't never going to get into 'upfront' in a million years. They're not interested in hearing anything new. At the moment I think there's too many R&U nights for the number of punters who actually appreciate this music, some DJs playing old soul pack rejects etc. Maybe there needs to be a "venue" cull. Instead of tagging onto the side of oldies rooms and calling it R&u or freebasing or whatever maybe put on a true upfront night, in the middle of the country - no oldies except last hour maybe - 9-2 (sorry Peggy not a Niter) just new and underplayed (like Chalky does) and try and get the younger folk along. See how it goes. Yer might be pleasantly surprised.
