  1. Loads of yellow and mauve Stax records were on styrene though weren't they.
  2. Yes Richard I remember it well, three releases all at the same time to kick start the label. Then soon after came the Flaming Emeralds which might puzzle some of the younger members on here, but it was a massive record at Wigan in April 77 as I am sure you'll recall. And that explains some of the other releases like Ronnie Love, Judy Street, Happy Cats etc. The red label came later with Brinstone Ingram etc. and I remember John telling me they didn't take off because Elvis died and the RCA presses were stopped and all filled with re-pressing everything they had on Elvis. ANything non Elvis was put on hold.
  3. Richard had got Don Gardner off of Soul Sam I believe in a straight swap for Larry Houston "Lets spend some time together" which of course was RS's Top Cat cover up. Heady days those late 70s when you think about it!
  4. Me too Dave, of course I know it wasn't really played out before Wigan : Just having a wind up about the Twisted Wheel thing.
  5. I wonder how many CWs there are over here now. A Hundred or more?
  6. Leave Lena Zavaroni alone you lot. She used to live round here in an unheated flat and died an anorexic, in extreme poverty. Her's was actually a very sad story.
  7. AH so did you get the second copy then you dark horse Arthur?
  8. Yeah so many of us remember this well and how we all wanted to know what it was. The missing Kool Kat number etc.(I think that was mentioned in Chris Savoury's magazine). It was Richard's biggest sound for a fair while.
  9. Actually I am "reliably informed" it was played at the Twisted Wheel first as a new release Soulman - bang on the money and I also heard RS none too pleased when Kev turned up his copy. It was a big talking point in all the fanzines etc.
  10. Yep agree with kev, got it's first playing by richard searling and it was at the casino. if it had been played at the torch we'd have heard about it long ago.
  11. Back on this Sunday 4 p.m. Solar Radio Sky 0129. Steve
  12. I think you might have a point Bob. Holding a match to something is different from exposing it to a hot fire for a period of time. Some substances don't 'take' until they reach a certain temperature I seem to remember reading when I was errrrr 18. Just out of interest which record did you try and set light to Motown Dave? The Carstairs is styrene I seem to recall, so should burn like a gas station if the accounts on this page are accurate. Maybe Pete didn't get the temperature hot enough, and hey maybe we need a controlled experiment at an allnighter with some boxes of unsellable or overplayed 'northern' that don't seem to change from one decade to the next : (That's a joke by the way). But at least that'll prove it one way or another.
  13. Now that is Ridiculous Rich. I wonder what planet they live on?
  14. Your mind is playing tricks on you, since there is no mention of Reverand on the record.
  15. No Ian, but i think the concern is that there is too much rating by computer rather than good old calculated risk / human judgment.....HNY to you too!
  16. Is there anything in Record & Tape Exchange Wayne? Waste of time last time I went. I know I am very fussy about what I buy, but more likely to find good northern under your seat at Stamford Bridge : Thanks for confirming that Roger is still open at least sometimes!
  17. Hi Simon, I know they're as mad as a bunch of hatters. I can't get any sense out of them and I saw that goon from ABI on the news today going on about flood insurance and why the industry won't insure people who live in flood prone areas. You are right though I'm more of your disaster man, Katrina, 9/11, that type of thing. That's why I was in Japan in November.
  18. Soul Brother Putney, err that's about it these days.
  19. Having never set light to a record I'll bow to your superior knowledge on this one Simon and let you set the 'record straight' (if you pardon the pun).....but always thought vinyl was highly flammable - maybe been reading to many insurance manuals :
  20. Yeah not too many duffers on Mauve Stax Nick. Only a couple in fact. I am sure records are a fire hazard vinyl or styrene Fireman Sam. That being said the place does look dirty and dangerous
  21. Is that Flea Market still going? Got some good things there cheap, like Maxine Brown Epic LP, but it was a long time ago now - at least 15 years. I'd be surprised if you find much 60s these days, what with everyone going over there so often. The good thing when I went to the shop in WPB (again at least 10 years ago), was that within an hour of talking to the owner these other collectors came in with their sales boxes and there was some interesting sweet soul stuff in them boxes. In the lock up it was v v hot and dusty, and the spiders put me off, even with me gloves on I was worried about getting bitten. The owner was pretty clued up, knew the main UK dealers etc.
  22. Yeah Boba, I collected Stax as well, sure is some crap amongst the gems....We could do a thread "The worst of Stax" and see who can find the worst one Ha! The Stax box looks god though. As for the warehouse I bet it's all C&W.
  23. Interesting thread I always had the Inferno release as being later than 1961....?
  24. There used to be a store in WPB when I was last there about 10 years ago, and the guy liked soul and had some mates that came along with boxes and a lock up out the back full of records and err...poisonous spiders. But that's all I can remember.....too many stores they all blur into one. I remember one of the guys (Adrian?) showed me a wants list from the UK - Frank Wilson, Don Gardner etc etc pages of "trophy records"
