  1. Thanks for the info on 11th Commandment Bob - great, since they have been a real mystery and some people even confuse them with the male group(s) of the same name: I like this type of information. And Fred Martin, looks like I've a few more to get sometime then Re Jive Five - i'd need to check again but believe the Samson was on Honey Bee Records. The "Sting" thing, yes at first blush when I first came across it I thought it was the lame dude from the Police too, and then the equally lame dude from the world of wrestling, but it's actually the remnants of the Jive Five. Its' on ABC and 1978 . Yes
  2. OK I'll try and give a perspective on this Winnie......I don't think it's a get out of jail card at all.... -Colin is respected for his love of soul music (not just northern oldies) - always a good start and a hurdle that (for many of us) people like Russ for example fall at. - He has always had great taste in music - another hurdle that some of the 70s original guys fall at. - Never been a "trophy hunter" having to chain his box to tables because it's so valuable etc. - And finally he WAS actually a legendary Mecca DJ. As it was a Mecca revival set, who else you gonna book if you want an authentic Mecca DJ? (Ian is doing something else these days). It might sound odd but this revival is almost "play by numbers" and I'd rather hear Colin put a Mecca set together, than Joe Noggin from round the corner with a box of original £5 Mecca 45s.
  3. How interesting that the northern scene now talks regularly about bootlegs and legitimate reissues in the same sentence. World of difference IMHO, and whilst I wouldn't DJ in a northern / rare soul club with either, I'd quite happily play legit reissues or first issues in my home if I didn't have the original.
  4. SO as far as I know Colin's only forays into the northern scene these days are these occasional Mecca revivals. He is a Modern jock and at the top of his game and a really good guy, always friendly and always passionate about the latest releases. As he was a pucka Mecca DJ from the 70s, I am not going to lose any sleep if he turns up at the odd Mecca revival night and plays off CDs. We all know what the records that made the Mecca are, even his legendary "last hour" left-fielders. Now if he was booked at an upfront venue that would be an entirely different matter. But he ain't, so get over yourselves please. There's nothing to see here.
  5. Hi there, yes on the comentary I said I thought 11th Commandment were from NY, Boston you think? interesting - been trying to find something out about this group. Fred Martin on Ru-Jac first yes I thought I said that, can't make up my mind about where Fred was from, since 3 of his 4 were on Rujac. This one was a Philadlephia Production though according to the label. Jive Five became Shadow, EI&J, Samson, and "Sting".
  6. Thanks for reminding me of it, gonna dig out my copy....
  7. Good idea man! Would need to also play album tracks for that one since there's not enough 45s for two hours
  8. Blimee shocked. Richard S once told me I need to get along there, and I never did!
  9. Rob here is a link..... Enjoy! Steve https://www.mixcloud.com/steve-guarnori/soul-people-plays-chess-19th-feb-2012/
  10. It's not a bootleg it's a 2nd issue put out to meet northern demand in 1975. Think the Fidels or something similar suffered a similar fate.
  11. Howdee partner, and welcome to the C&W Hoe-down forum.: Listen up, no one said that Vickie Baines was a C&W record, it's a Niter sound, we only mentioned that it was found in a Hillbilly warehouse in Allentown and then all of a sudden all these gringos started scaring the horses. Yee-haw! Ride safely now.
  12. Laso - the first album and Laso Square was a biggie for Colin Curtis.
  13. I know just playing along with Tezza a bit. I still have the 45 Ted sold me.
  14. Mentioning the Impressions one of their later ones was held back following complaints from Motown. I know which one it was but it is stored in a difficult part of my brain to access, and I cannot be bothered to try and retrieve it at the moment..... My nomination: Dennis Edwards "I didn't have to but I did"
  15. Hill Billy Soul. Jed Clampett on banjo!
  16. Thanks Steve, that's the one. Ah yes - going senile with the Karen Young "Hot shot" thing.....
  17. The "Hot Shot" one I thought? I know Vicki was also someone else in the 70s.
  18. Joan, it's brill. John A originally found it in a hillbilly place in Allentown Pa. back in the 70s. Does make you wander what audience it was originally aimed for, but wasn't Vicki Baines someone else, Karen Young or something?
  19. A certain person on here also bought your demo in the late 90s......
  20. A very diplomatic answer Joan. You bet Mick is going to get some tickling over this......in fact it's already started
  21. Actually Sean, this period in time is properly documented. An old copy of Blackbeat reveals that Norman Connors was played first by 'Arry 'Ardbottom at the Ferrett & Pidgeon allnighter a full 2 weeks before you spun it mate
