  12. Yes you are right - have amended,,,,,a momentary slip betwixt the cup and the lip.....
  13. Yes that's the problem with these programmes, usually very poorly researched and cliched in their content. In fairness most of the books on the subject are just as bad, bleating on about the NY clubs and how fabulous they all were and the outrageous things that went on in them. When the reality was that disco was a huge phenomenon in other parts of the USA and of course Europe.....Soul Sam was running a disco in the late 60s in Spain when he was on holiday there. They wired up a deck or a couple of decks and played music on the beach. And of course the youth club and local disco phenomenon which was by and large (down here) playing JB, Ohio Players, Whispers, Bohannon etc. and up north playing early Northern. I think I'll give the programme a miss. It sounds like another poorly done job like ones I've seen in the past.

  15. Some good all dayers there in the early 80s as well. Can't remember who was running it then, around 82-83? Don't think it was Cox. Arthur that letter you got should be a badge of honour!!! Discharged by Ken Cox for playing quality music, respect to you!
  16. Last saw Mary at a record fair in Peterborough in the mid 80s, think she was selling some stuff and I got Cognac "How high" off of her which she was championing. Glad to hear she's making a comeback. Top person.
  17. I'd be interested to know what the Sting ones are like. I have probably passed them by without looking in the past, seeing the name you'd think it was the limp Police dude as you call him.....ATB Steve
  18. Yup loads of times but for me Win there is a world of difference between a night playing rare / upfront records or even a general oldies night, and a Mecca revival. For the latter is strikes me you probably should get someone that actually DJed there. And I accept the point about Ian, if he and Kev agree to do a Mecca set fine and dandy. But I simply cannot get hot under the collar about the format at what is essentially a party night. General oldies nights I think should stick to OVO - tend not to do them by and large, but again it's play by numbers. You know you'll hear Eddie Parker (x5), Del Larks (x5), Mel Britt (x4), Salvadores (x4), Lou Pride (x3) etc etc. What Butch plays is not generally available Bob, and is unlikely to become so. Mecca records are generally ten a penny, and any Tom Dick or Harry can play a Mecca set and I think that's the difference - if you are going to do a Mecca night you really need Ian or Colin. Very few genuinely rare Mecca 45s from the heyday since they were mostly recent releases as you know. _____ The amount of handbag waving this is generating is in stark contrast to another revival night a couple of years ago, where two heroes returned to rapturous applause, played largely off of carvers, and no one batted an eyelid.......
  19. Is this still rattling on? Aren't there anymore old Tom Jones records for some of you guys to come and tell us are really great soul?
  20. Yup, I'll tip dave off...Thanks Steve
  21. Already asked and answered. Already asked and answered.
  22. Trust you to bring religion into it!!
  23. Excellent....thanks! Actually there is a website interview with one of the J5 that mentions this. I googled it earlier wil try and refind the link.
  24. I thought I'd answered this Martyn? It's a Mecca revival, it's not a rare soul nighter or event, the place is full of people who just want to have a good time and only care about what's coming out of the speakers. On another thread they are probably called "handbaggers" or something! God knows why they put cameras above the decks at such a night in the first place! Unless it was a requirement of the local Soul Police Personally I wouldn't go to a Mecca revival, not my scene, but I wouldn't go to many revival nights as I am sure most on here have worked out by now :. But if you are putting on a Mecca revival who better to headline than Colin? Joe Soap playing Mecca oldies on OVO shock horror just wouldn't cut it for the majority of 'through the door' paying punters. Let's be honest about this many of us have got pretty much all of the good Mecca records anyway, so it's not like we're off to hear something new or radically different. As Cliff and I have both said it's pretty much 'play by numbers' at these events. And someone posted about a Midlands DJ who looks bored, reads the paper, munches pork scratchings etc. and gets booked every week. Dunno who he is, but you'd never see Colin doing that. And that's why I drew a distinction between Colin and a number of other former DJs. Sad if Dave was offended, next time you are over from Oz get yourselves along to Lifeline or Thorne or some of the Euro events.
