  1. Game over. A 30 second google will find this quote from none other than Ralph himself....... "Gregory Porter 1960 What? It was actually the suggestion of my friend Steve Cole, a DJ/vinyl enthusiast, that both the original and Opolopo Kick & Bass Rerub mixes back to back would make a fantastic 12 inch release. My original concern was that 12 inch singles don't sell enough, and the mixes are too long for the seven inch vinyl format which is currently enjoying a resurgence. So Record Store Day became a wonderful solution as it allowed Expansion to put out a superb record on 12 inch single, hand numbered for vinyl fans and collectors with some guaranteed in support. Though actually we only pressed 500 and I'm already wishing we had run a few more". This clearly sets out the original intent, which seems to have been quickly reversed and no amount of bluster from the 'collectors suck collective' on here will convince me otherwise. (Hi to Roger, Glyn, Steve and co!). You simply cannot have it both ways, going on about limited numbers for a limited market and a "wonderful solution" of pressing up 500 "for vinyl fans and collectors" then reversing it...less than a month later. This isn't the first time Expansion have done a limited edition, as the protagonists on here should well know, but it is as far as i can tell the first time they've ever gone and re-done something they've call a "limited edition". This is a straight forward case of trying to have your cake and eat it as the above quote from Ralph shows.
  2. Hello Mark, well they created an instant collectible didn't they? Nothing wrong with that since the majority of sales have been via legal download or CD, so GP hasn't missed out and the 12 was always going to be a bit 'quirky' / DJ elitist. And as already said "record store day" is designed to get people to use their local record shops rather than shopping online. There are also plenty of very limited runs of 7s being done most of which are sailing by many folks on the scene. Look at the demand for Jo Stance once the Normans finally sniffed it out....plenty of other sounds have floated by 'undetected'. I actually don't think the reissue 12 of this (if I can call it that) will be a great seller for Expansion and will probably end up in cut outs / discount bins. Why spend £6.50 on a track you already have on CD / download unless your a vinyl junkie? And if you are a vinyl junkie you'll always crave the "limited" edition. And Paul judging by your post, remind me not to buy any 2nd hand vinyl from you m8...gives a whole new meaning to the universally accepted abbreviation 'WOL'
  3. Not a turkey....
  4. Yes Cunnie, Expansion suck on this one. Got a numbered 12 for £10, with a bit of effort, but the moral to the story is if you're going to hype up a 12 as a "special record store day" limited thing, don't go issuing it again a month later....makes a mockery of the whole 'collecting' thing.
  5. The Count, as Tats I think once said a man who's name has one too many vowels in it....
  6. Yes that's right. I think I paid 50 for Soul Sam's copy, but that was years ago.....
  7. I'd draw a line between legit reissues and bootlegs....if I may. The two are totally different and yet are getting confused in this discussion.
  8. I'll have to re-read them threads then Mike
  9. What? It's an interesting perspective, and perhaps one some of us haven't thought of......but best post for a very long time? Come on Mike, there's better ones every day, Gareth's perspective on the Philly hit maker scene yesterday for example - now that's a very good post. The NE soul scene, another one.....ATB Steve
  10. Interesting. I buy / get all new legally issued soul and funk 7s, and am the wrong side of 50, so will be buying yours as well......Steve
  11. Yes I'll play it on this months show....and put the podcast up. Incidentally Charen Cotton I also have this on a really odd label, different mix and all. Not sure if it came first or sometime later......but it's pretty!
  12. GOOD POST Gareth, and yes the same backing track on Toll Darkness, which has better vocals and an ace stepper B side.....
  13. Were they digging' the scene?
  14. Was the sun-roof down?
  15. There were some right lowlifes in that place.....all right... :
  16. I think I know someone who has one going spare. PM me your price and I'll see if I can get it...
  17. Thanks for clarifying Mike. Forgot about the Allen Toussaint connection with Labelle, so now 100% sure Labelle was first.
  18. Thanks for clarifying Mark. Memory frazzled...
  19. Winstanley again......I do have a copy of this somewhere.....probably never going to play it again....Bob A - Just as possible that Workman's name was "taken off" as "added", but that being said am about 75% sure that Labelle came first.
  20. I wouldn't say they were shite Andy but there are plenty of far better records out there.
  21. Manship got nearly 2g for one at auction didn't he? Price is artificially inflated due to current demand. Was a 25er a couple of years ago. Do you need it that much RUSS?
