  1. ....And John & weirdest - which I believe came from the same area as FH I mean no one is now going to admit to having a see through copy of F Hymes are they? Really?
  2. Don't start me on Harold Melvin "The love I lost". It was originally revived in the middle of a modern / 70s set some years ago when all the soulful house stuff was mingling with rare 70s (UBP, Joi Caldwell etc v Elipsis, Tolbert etc.), so early 2000s - purely because it sounded a bit different, wasn't miserable, seemed to fit in and yet was something everyone knew. And it rammed the floor at that venue...and got played a few more times as a "singalong / Karaoke" job. And that should have been it, put away for another ten years, and left to Radio 2 for the occasional play by Smashey & Nicey. But no, it's now heard at just about every darn soul night. Put it away fellas and lady DJs.....you all got more interesting records to play.
  3. No Bob, totally different group....Leaders Rat Race was a record from Little Rock. Steve
  4. Well maybe not to a soul night in Ramsbottom m8 wherever that is (Lancs?). The soul scene is much much broader than just Niters, as you well know Terry....
  5. Yep the story was he died soon after making the record. But agree it does sound like our man, and also the guitar hold 2 mins and 10 in sounds kind of familiar....God I hope one of our heroes isn't reduced to making dodgy versions of "Shout" for semi hosed mid west white folk who can't dance
  6. Yes Royal Esquires - all originals.... Just thought no one had posted about that for 3 months now steve
  7. Guy posts a playlist, and gets the machine guns turned on him from Stig towers. Let that be a lesson to anyone else thinking of posting a playlist! The guns are primed and waiting..... He he!
  8. Got to remember this won't be the first very good '2nd press" to come from that part of the world. There's some rare sweet stuff redone as well about the same time. And before we start this one again everything on Prix is a first issue....they found the owner who had a garage full....
  9. Yes like ll the big labels towards the end they became more reliant on leased in deals rather than their old product.
  10. Sam says he got it there, Tony Rounce says he didn't? I feel like a go between between two old geezers discussing the war.
  11. Hi Dave, some people say their copy is different to mine (which came from Nev I think). Mine is exactly the same as the one Sam had years ago when we lined it up with a more yellowy one at Cleethorpes and compared them (and they were differentP. Nothing will convince me that there is only one press of this 45. When they were done anyone's guess.....but Sam and arthur who had it pretty early on thought the orangey one was the original. John A also said the orangey one was the original and the yellowy ones were repress.
  12. 1st issue is more orangey coloured than the 2nd.
  13. Yes, I am sure Philly got serviced, was just using an example. Memphis Nomads was the obvious example of a vanity Bob. Melvin Van Peebles soundtrack thing probably another one, but on Stax- Volt there were not any more I can readily think of.
  14. Paul Thompson came into Record Corner as a new release import apparently. Sam told me that's where he got his first copy.
  15. There's no doubt excluding a couple of vanity 45s, they pressed up quantity on every title - I don't know but probably 5,000 minimum. The mystery is always what happened to the copies that weren't sold? Something like the Limitations might have gone local only, to Arkansas / Tennessee say, and if the distribution men there kept them, they're still there waiting to be found in some old geezers basement. If they threw them out with last week's newspaper, or sold them on, then it may never turn up in quantity. Sorry but can't describe it any other way. BTW I found "Rat Race' in a collectors shop in New Orleans for $1 - RE-sult I reckon!!!
  16. Think with a label like Stax they knew that the next Sam & Dave, Otis Redding, Rufus Thomas etc. would sell thousands, and they advertised them widely (Cashbox, Billboard, TV appearances etc.) because these acts already had hits under their belt, so they'd press more and get them round the country, plugged and into the shops. Not so with the Roz Ryan's, Paul thompson's etc. which had to try and fit in around the hit makers. So yes I am sure press runs were lower. The great thing about our music though is all these wonderful non hit wonders eh?
  17. Not in question that Nev....the question is always how many got out after pressing and how many got junked. As for these Charlenes, the guy says he got them from a record exec.and names him in the post.
  18. You've completely lost me too Nev. Thought you were implying that if you didn't go to the states to discover the record you can't be protective about it. That's what I thought was absurd. As we are both confusing each other shall we call it a score draw?
  19. Nev that's a different point, it's about the reasons why people don't want to put playlists up on the internet. No one is moaning cos someone turns up a record they have (well that does happen but that's another story )...... So if you search down rare records, buy them, and play them that's a great thing for the people at the venue the Dj is playing at. Posting up venue playlists on the internet for the whole world to see is entirely different, can you not see the difference? Feel this thread is in danger of veering off course. It's about the reasons why people don't post playlists anymore, and one reason is all the hard work that goes into finding records, dissecting what's good and what won't work, the difficulty in getting them, and the cost of buying them, like it or not people are going to be a bit protective about it all.
  20. Nev this is an absurd comment. Does a dis-service to all the dealers here many of whom turn up unknowns. If you buy a record you can do what you like with it. Stick it on top of your car if you really want to.
  21. The two aren't mutually exclusive are they Dave? I like things on odd / unusual labels, but I also will always go for a great tune whatever the label, if that makes sense....
  22. Went a couple of times. Nev Wherry was on, so was soul sam who one night did a Motown set, and another played all his then modern stuff - a landmark moment for me as it got me going back to Wigan again in 1980 - Love Committee, Top Cat, James Mack etc. I remember getting Ronnie McNeir on DeTo for £10, just about the most I'd ever paid for a record. Still got that copy. We also went one night when it was cancelled, trying to get back from Bedford at 1 am not much fun.
  23. Great stuff. Lots of people missed Prestatyn. Good to see they've gone with John as well rather than trying to do it themselves.
  24. Yes that's right Gene Dozier had two further releases on Minit
  25. Great, we'll have a listen. Thanks.
