Mixed Emotions On Cole
Didn't we discuss all this a few years ago? I thought we'd bottomed out what was and what wasn't issued back in the day.

True enough. But everything is relative Bazza. I remember seeing a Lou Ptride in a box in the late 70s for £35, and my mate selling Barbnara Mills UK demo for £70 to Keith Minshull @ Wigan. These sums were a fortune back then. No way could I afford a Lou Pride.

You mean Scepterical surely? So the likely scenarios are either: - Pye were going to put it out in response to the hit with "Armed & Extremely dangerous", but by the time they woke up, the follow up "Smarty pants" was all set to go, and used the Scepter B side "One step away" as it's flip, so they had no B side. - It was prepped up as a potential Pye Disco demand release c.1975.

Yes, very true, right up to the late 70s new releases that fitted the bill were played on the northern scene as well (Sad Girl, F Emeralds, Eddie Holman etc.). Later if you include Stafford with Richard / Dave T / Robin etc. PS Bearsy: Give me F.Smogg over Bill Cosby anyday! :

Rather confused by this post now Wiggy - since your signature under your post says "I will be playing uptempo rare and underplayed Northern Soul from original vinyl" at some gig you are doing in London. Thought you were Russ W's agent in the south? Then you are playing uptempo rare and underplayed and now you don't like rare soul after all, but you do like northern. All a bit Spaghetti Head!! :

Predictable as ever Roger!- Just How Big Is The Modern Scene?
Very funny Len. Problem is some folk might actually believe you... Agreed, flip far better soul record.- The Right To Reply
Yeah but Steve, just playing OVO for the sake of it, proves nothing. Anyone can line up a playlist of obscure stuff, and to Jocko's point, they also need to be good records. Don't want a row about the myriad of different styles, and whether they're crap or not, but it is a relevant point I think. I've seen plenty of OV playlists of underplayed stuff which are as dull as ditchwater....sorry to say.- Just How Big Is The Modern Scene?
No Len, there weren't enough ex northern punters to populate these side rooms, when you can have your own dedicated modern night without the normans. Also the promotors realised they could save money by having a freestyle room for all and sundry, where the only condition is that you don't need to pay the DJs for their services.- The Right To Reply
The other dimension, as perhaps my learned Scottish banking friend was trying to suggest earlier via his cryptic comments, was that just because a venue plays OVO, it doesn't of itself make it good. The other ingredient is taste - playing good music, not poor music. Do all OV champions play good stuff? Without breathing life into the corpse of the 'playlist' thread from the other day, I'd think not.- Just How Big Is The Modern Scene?
Mainly boogie, funky and club classics.- The Right To Reply
Yes I agree now that I understand what you were saying, although I actually had about 50% of 'em I was delighted to hear- The Right To Reply
Stop what Jock? We were there, but Lorraine didn't like the bad language  PS: Good to see you at Cleggy- Just How Big Is The Modern Scene?

It's perfectly fine for people to go out to handbag nights and dance to the Snake and The Love I lost etc. We're not the "happy police" as well as the "soul police" are we? Just don't confuse that stuff with what I like - it's very very different.- Just How Big Is The Modern Scene?
It's a meaningless question since as well as various shades of "modern", right through to Y2k12 banging house and R&B, it picks up many people who are not on a recognised scene. One of the strangest things a few years ago was when we organised a Soul 24-7 party. One guy who is not on the "scene" as far as we could tel, said "give me the big downstairs room and I'll fill it up". Lo and behold us usual suspects had about 60 people in the upstairs room. This other dude had over 250 turn up downstairs, and none of us had ever seen any of them before.- The Right To Reply
I've never managed to get any sound out of a stamp Almost? Entirely I'd say. The exception is the remoter outposts of the UK where everyone gets together once a quarter at the only event in the area and you'll hear everything 60s wise from the Impressions to the Celebrities (on OV)...That's a neccesary part of the equation too. Of course Russ's views are what the minority aspire to, just think the NS oldies train has long since left the station as far as those principles are concerned. So why bother fighting it? Accept it, move on with the rare soul banner, the rest of us who collect, appreciate new and varied sounds, range of styles and tempos, do our own thing, rather than trying to stay wedded to something which has gone overground and become a parody of it's orginal ethos.- Johnny Truitt - Abet - Dj Copies
There goes a girl / I don't have to be a crying man Like other Truitt titles it got re-pressed in the 70s on the multi coloured design. Sorry mine is not for sale, but good luck tracking it down.- The Right To Reply
Very true in many areas. However in other areas there's hardly anywhere to go at all.....maybe one soul night a month or quarter....and a long drive..... where a bit of everything style wise needs to get mixed in to keep everyone happy.
