I also quite like one of Bonnie's Columbia sides. I reviewed it in In The Basement once and got some complaints - hope it wasn't you John ?

Does anyone know if the record with this title actually exists? Discographies all refer to it as they all copy each others mistakes , but I've never seen or heard of it anywhere and it's not on their LP at the time. BMI lists the title as a Wally Roker song, and whilst he was working for Scepter at around the time, it seems unlikely this record was issued with this alternative B side - unless someone can convince me otherwise? Anyone know for sure? Steve

Thank goodness I only really collect 45s

There were quite a few duds on Stax....
-
Sadly she died in poverty a few years ago in a flat near me. It was a bit of a scandal she had nothing in her flat and weighed under 100 lb. She'd been living on welfare for some years and seemingly had absolutely nothing to her name. Jimmy, Stax was like many other labels in the 70s trying to get market share and compete with the increasingly dominating giants of the industry - and that meant leasing in whatever they could get. Mind you if I was Lena's manager I'd want a label with better distribution channels into the pop market than Stax to put out her work on.

Northern Soul - The Film - News, mainstream and more
Steve G commented on Mike's article in News Archives
OMG - middle aged baldies and fatties and OAPs trying to look like they did 40 years ago? Well you don't need to set up a film to make that - just go to any big weekender -
 That's what you get for putting posts up at work and being colour blind.... How many roughly? Are we talking many or a handful.... Yes it's pretty much identical when I played them together.

I have this I think. Red label, "Who's cheating on who" same as Yellow Sunshine on Prodigal?

It's probably your old one being sold with a 33% markup Terry.

Hi, surprising as I always thought Rubin was white But I'd certainly buy Al Wilson = JR Bailey who co-wrote "help me" with Johnnie Northern. Probably something they knocked out in a morning.....

Was talking to WInfield Parker yesterday, and he's known Babs for many years which reminds me.... she wrote his "Will there ever be another love for me" in 1970.

My Interview For Blues & Soul Mag. By Dj Snowboy (Uk)
Steve G replied to chakster 45's topic in All About the SOUL
Interesting stuff thanks for posting. -
"Master, Do you consider the playing of oldies to be moral and the playing of newies to be immoral?"

OK well I've personally not met anyone who admires people because they have an expensive play-box or buy expensive 2k records. And of course there are good cheap records. However I have met people who nod in the direction of DJs who can construct a set well or play a varied set. On the other side of the coin I have also met people who are clearly envious of those with expensive records. Was at a venue recently and a topish name was on playing I'd say rarities (one of the ones I mentioned earlier) and this fella says to me "I don't know what all the fuss is about with this bloke, there are better records on Atlantic" and walked off. And that is rather missing the point I'd say.

Paul, Some good points here, and also some I don't agree with. The northern scene always had an ethos of exclusivity. It was built on it and started at The Wheel with records like "Dust my Broom" and grew in the 70s via Torch, Mecca and Casino whether it was Winstanley with his exclusive instrumentals or Richard with his almost totally covered up playlist in the late 70s. This continued with Stafford where Keb & Guy's stuff was all covered up as well. Guy would "release" a few titles to uncovered status every couple of months via his column in Blackbeat. The scene then shrank, picked up some mods along the way etc. until the late 90s when loads of people came back onto it (referred to as "scene returnees" etc.). That's when I think the original ethos was cast aside by many, who just wanted to relive their memories, and good luck to them. So please don't carp on about rare / expensive records. Exclusivity and rare records along with dancing were always the backbone of the northern scene (not to say there aren't good cheap records as well). As a soul collector with many many thousands of records in many genres I can see that, and accept it for what it is. The use of the term punters - you shouldn't get hung up on that Paul, it's just shorter than typing in "paying customers".

Oh come off it Winnie. People make their own minds up whether to go somewhere. If you are looking for underplayed / unknown and you don't know the records on a list, or like the djs appearing it's gonna fit the bill for you. A quick 10 mins on youtube if you are not sure on the tunes.... So your logic is no one is allowed to make comments on anything in case a casual observer gets the wrong end of the stick? Nonsense, we're all adults, you can post better than that m8.
-
Winnie, why would the crowd that just go for a fun night out with their mates on a saturday night or to big weekenders listening to the Salvadors, Mel Britt etc bother to get involved in a thread like this? Their scene continues unabated and they have a choice of another 50 venues to go to tomorrow. I don't understand why you would think they would want to get involved, nothing is wrong with the scene for them is it?
-
Your selections never boring Wayne......plus Terry likes crossover / modern sometimes - like at 4 pm in the afternoon on his sofa
-
Thanks Rod, yes I am sure you will. Hopefully at the next Lifeline?
-
Rod, I said I do know em. Know most of em personally and a couple by reputation / heard em out etc. So don't make things up it does you a dis-service! And what's this crap about "stick to the modern scene"? Fraid you are showing your ignorance of the rare soul scene here cos if you knew that much you'd know I can and do play a 60s set and also collect 60s. Please do some homework. Also went back over your posts cos I was worried I might just be being a bit harsh on you, cos you are obviously upset. So anyway went back after you posted your 32 sounds from your club. You then replied to your own post not once but three times with lines like "Tempted?"...then ."Anyone interested?" and then "I might as well play oldies then"....No one replied and so I give you some feedback saying they were a mix of fair / good and pretty much known sounds. And then this stuff? Cheers!
-
Oh dear! Look Rod if you don't want feedback suggest you don't put your club up on a pedestal with a selection of sounds, then get all upset when you don't happen to like the feedback. No one said the records were bad did they? I wish you well with your club but you were the guy saying you only get 50 in and how disappointed you are with that, not me. I've long ago come to the conclusion that only a minority want to hear new music, been all over the place to half filled venues etc. come away wondering where all the people are, and sometimes disappointed by the sounds. I actually agree with you about oldies venues - the odd one occasionally is fun, but generally I don't go to them. And you obviously don't know me very well cos I think I do know the people you have listed, as well as Russ. I am also very happy with my lot in life thanks, and by the way also very happy with the records I have.
-
I don't wish to come across as rude Rod, but i would visit your clubs if I thought they were really upfront and going to offer me a good night out with interesting music. You've put your clubs playlist out there and you have to live or die with that. I guess others vote with their feet. I do kind of understand your frustration at poor attendances, but as Roger said the vast majority out there just want their oldies and a good night out. The number of people actually wanting to hear something different is very small in the scheme of things. So to attract them, the gig has to have something special. As I said earlier it seems now that everyone has a box of underplayed oldies / semi knowns, and there is a second room just about everywhere, more often than not heavily 'overstaffed' often with "freebie wannabee" types (to be brutal about it !!), and more often than not, NOT actually playing great records that make you stand up and pay attention.
-
Unbelievable Rod. Firstly you are complaining not enough punters in your gaff. Now you are saying there are not enough venues to cater for not enough punters? Now I am confused.
-
Oi I know this thread is pretty wide, but now you wanna talk about trains? Go start a new thread you cocky sod. :
