  1. Hi Brett, At the Lifeline weekenders there was a real mix more chilled and unknowns in the afternoons and early evening, sort of gradually morphed into an allnighter each night, then was kick ass. In the earlier sessions there was no Betty Swann "Kiss my love goodbye" / Prince Phillip Mitchell "I'm so happy" popular oldies either like you get in some of these supposed "R&U" rooms at weekenders or 15 year old Yarmouth spins masquerading as the latest discovery - but instead all good interesting stuff . Even Mick H was playing slows early doors. I think all of us who were involved as DJs thought it worked really well as a concept. And Chris, yes 200 of the right people is fine. Steve
  2. Some serious titles in that lot.... I thought Quorn was something you ate?

Thing is a lot of the records that have been posted up on here have been played for several years now as Chalky says. Third Eye, Sag War Fare Wally Coco being examples, and as for Harvey Scales, this was spun in the late 1990s - so do try and keep up I think they're great sounds (obviously), but mixed in with other stuff to give a bit of variety. Oh, hang on, Is this the "upfront" thread? Oh man, just noticed I am in the "wrong room". Sorry I'll get me coat.....
  4. The reality Pete is 200 and that will take a lot of effort. Steve

Hi Kev, I'd just class it as a dance record without trying to pigeonhole it too much. It's not traditional northern, but obviously is popular with northern soul heads....

Hi Neil, more like balding fox these days Oldie I'd say Kev.
  7. Fair point Callum BUT there is so much more to a rare soul weekenders than just a couple of Niters. Daytimes are a great opportunity to chill out and here some new stuff as well, rather than more of the same old, or people claiming stuff they play is new / unknown when in reality it ain't.

Isn't that about having DJs who can do a varied set Joan, rather than one trick Ponies?.... PS: Can we called it funky edged northern or something? Funk to me is stuff like Ray Frazier & Shades of Madness, Soul Dynamics, Vernon Garrett, Hard Drivers etc. Fabulous records, by the way "Bunji".
  9. I actually think they look pretty. I don't like R&B but if I did, I'd probably buy them, they are different enough designs not to fall into the looky-like debate. Steve

some of it is fabulous, some of it is awful. You need DJs that can actually sort the wheat from the chaff. Sadly some of them can't.
  11. I agree Chalky, also don't need every weekender out there trying to convince us they already do it.....
  12. Yup, but hold onto your saddle, Wally was working for Scepter at the time though Bob, so it is possible and does add a "twist" (if you'll pardon the Isley Brothers pun!). In the meantime I'll chalk it up in my book as an 'MWR' - Mythical Wand release.
  13. I really miss the Lifeline weekenders at The Old Bull. I thought they were great and I wish they'd restart them. These days apart from SOul Essence, the ones in the South West, and a cameo appearance at Cleethorpes,I don't really do weekenders (but would do a rare one as long as the music is good quality rare). Am not interested in just going for three days of alcahol, bad kebabs, line dancing, bad hangovers and a sing along to Top 500 60s and 70s or so called "underplayed / unknowns" that have been played and known for the last 15 years+. So the answer from me is if the DJs are right, then yes.
  14. Hi Bob, it's on several Wand discographies as an alternative B Side. Haven't checked Big Dave R's one, but basically the other 3-4 including Greg's.
  15. Sorry Nev, my humour fails me whenever I hear about bootlegs. So are these Outta Sights bootlegs yes or no?
  16. Maybe we should run a sweepstake? What is the aggregate total of all auction items each week. Closest wins - bit like a prediction league..... Someone can post up what's ending each week and we all guess the total.
  17. No Nev it looks pretty crap.: Modern font, shiny new label and a blob mark on the left hand side. Yuk!
  18. Les McCutcheon? The acceptable face of "Colin Bee Promotions"? Oh no! Think I bought boots off of him as a schoolkid in the mid 70s Is it the same guy, or just another fella with an identical name?
  19. Richard, and Butch involved on the musical front - can't go wrong there. Two v knowledgeable people.

I also quite like one of Bonnie's Columbia sides. I reviewed it in In The Basement once and got some complaints - hope it wasn't you John ?
  21. Does anyone know if the record with this title actually exists? Discographies all refer to it as they all copy each others mistakes , but I've never seen or heard of it anywhere and it's not on their LP at the time. BMI lists the title as a Wally Roker song, and whilst he was working for Scepter at around the time, it seems unlikely this record was issued with this alternative B side - unless someone can convince me otherwise? Anyone know for sure? Steve

There were quite a few duds on Stax....

Sadly she died in poverty a few years ago in a flat near me. It was a bit of a scandal she had nothing in her flat and weighed under 100 lb. She'd been living on welfare for some years and seemingly had absolutely nothing to her name. Jimmy, Stax was like many other labels in the 70s trying to get market share and compete with the increasingly dominating giants of the industry - and that meant leasing in whatever they could get. Mind you if I was Lena's manager I'd want a label with better distribution channels into the pop market than Stax to put out her work on.
