  1. Ok thanks guys, that explains it then. Just Neil Brown left which is a mystery. John did you get everything else on the label? Did you get the 7" comedy EP? I've collected it too, and the ones I listed were the ones I couldn't find on my shelves. Hence the question. I was discussing the label with Roburt, and that's what prompted me to take a look at what I had. I also don't have a couple of the 380s, which I don't think came out. Steve
  2. Played a couple of tracks off of this last Sunday, nice one Dave!
  3. Has anyone seen: Helene Smith "Lets wait until dark" Thunder Lightning & Rain "Super funky" And Neil Brown "My soul is running over" ? on Phil La of Soul? Steve
  4. Wow lots of books being worked on right now...... We mustn't forget the 'regional reps' who also played a role in getting stuff played in the regions and away from NYC Chicago, Nashville and Philly. But for many there was no substitute to walking round to radio stations with your product to see the DJ yourself. Steve
  5. Probably a vanity press. Meaning that it was done for the DJ and for use / sale at local shows / record hops / Theatre etc. in STL- maybe he'd been playing Arctic releases. On the licensing of other product this was going on all the time in the 60s. Usually reciprocal agreements - we have one of yours, you can have on of ours etc. My two penny worth guestimates.
  6. Hi, as you know Djing at a niter is a pretty frenetic experience for any DJ if you are not playing northern soul by numbers. Not nerve-wracking, but you need to be alert and on your game. Any mug with cash can dig out Eddie Parker, Salvadors, Lou Pride etc and fill the floor. But playing something different at a niter and mixing it up a bit - assuming the Dj and the gig are in harmony (i.e. not a Dj known for playing some different stuff at a bang oldies niter)- the DJ has to be reading the crowd, listening to what's gone on before, what's working on the night what's not, and reacting when something they think will work suddenly thins the floor unexpectedly etc. And not be frightened to change it, rather than carrying on with something that's not working. So concentration needed throughout. If I want so see a DJ doing singalong and handclaps I'll go to an oldies nite and probably join in "I really really love you baby, Ooooh yes I do" etc etc. All of this totally different at a soul night where you can "mug it" and no one really minds, at a niter you can't. If you kill it, you may as well have set the fire alarm off. Not meaning to be patronising - stay well mon.
  7. Bearsy, Hi, are you going for the most hackneyed cliches going with these posts or something ? No doubt you are on at Rugby, so a good plug there. But all this other stuff - there ain't many DJs that love themselves. Whether a DJ is smiling, dancing or quite serious doesn't matter to me. Some of it may be nerves for example. Quite a daunting experience going on at a kicking niter for many, esp if the DJ in front of you is the regular 'trick' and has ramped it up. And who are these folks that just show up for their spots and leave these days? Don't really see too much of that either. Original thinking pleeeez!
  8. Who is the other version by? It's on the tip of my tongue.....
  9. As far as I am aware it's always been a tough record Ian. Great that you had one and sold it cheap in 89 - maybe I was chasing the wrong things then
  10. Souljazera - any response on this? when exactly couldn't you "give it away" then?
  11. Madness thread Russ! Close it down before it descends into another 'bitchslap fest' between the half dozen or so who are genuinely interested One mans known another mans unknown.....one mans newie another mans oldie - not to mention the ladies - and so the thread goes on....and on....
  12. Amazing selection. There's something about Picture sleeves.... If you ever see a French EP of Annita & Diane please let me know. Cheers
  13. Playing off of albums this afternoon.....4.p.m www.solarradio.com Sky 0129 Next month Will Hatcher feature.
  14. Has anyone got the SSI track? I don't think I do.
  15. Yes quite a few John. It's recorded @ Scepter. Bennings was also a singer and also wrote for people like Hoagy lands and Lily Fields. Augustus was a "girly guy" since he also wrote the odd side for Maxine and Dusty. I just don't know who Brenda J Jones was - yet! I'll ask "da boys" if any of them have any recollection of her.
  16. Are u kidding? She's on Facebook ya know.
  17. I haven't researched this yet, and I will get round to it, but who was Brenda J Jones (Frank Augustus managed) who did "Point of No Return" in New York?
  18. Oh really Jaz? I've been collecting since the late 70s and don't remember it ever being around in any quantity. I'd have def bought it with those nutty 'Starsky & Hutch' screaming electronic piano bits, fantastic drum breaks,'wah wahs' etc.
  19. What happened to him Kris? Did he ever sell it in the end?
  20. Very interesting concept. With a concept like this how will you ensure that you don't just get tons of junk / bad conditions sent?
  21. I prefer the slower take of the Promatics....but you are right it must be the rarest one (two) on the label.
  22. Agree 100% with this. I've seen others make this mistake in the past. PS Ian I've got all the Arctic 45s except "Chains of love" if you need to check anything.
  23. According to CB 18/2/67 Larry Cohen was the National Sales Promo Head. The acquisition of the first record, Helene Smith master was made "by Jamie Guyden President Harold B Lipsius during his recent Miami trip". Steve
