  1. At least you bought a copy Chalky for which I thank you. I'd just started a second book about forgotten Alabama soul singers which would have been a right riveting read, but I am seriously thinking of giving up on it. A diminishing number of people seem to want factual information in a written format, much easier to speculate and guess on the internet I guess, and of course it is free. A bit like the wider world right now I suppose. PS: Maybe we should call the NY Honeybees (Earl Jean etc.) The Honeybees (2) to avoid confusion with the Detroit gals.
  2. That name Stegall again....the third member was called Stegall. Yes I do. One of them was Jerry Williams barber. You really do need to buy my book before they're all gone.
  3. Yes she is.
  4. Yes I am sure they were on Jack Mongomery's 45; that would tie up nicely. The Fontana group were completely different as I am sure you know. Cheers.
  5. The Honey bees were from Detroit (not NY) and were spotted singing in a night club - again from my book. They comprised Barbara Ann Williams, her sister Juanita Williams and a lady who's last name was Stegall. I got that piece of info from Gilly originally.
  6. The label was not Detroit. It was owned by Pete Garris and one of the Scepter guys in NY (Sam Goff who was dating Florence's daughter) and they released tracks from NY, New Orleans, Texas and Detroit. Can't believe having documented and researched all this thoroughly in my book, there is still so little knowledge and the same erroneous myths still abound.
  7. Yes the same Tangeers group with the Jetsons (Baltimore Sounds book) - apparently the two groups performed together locally at various gigs, so guess it made sense to put out the Date 45. As to why they were called the Tangiers, no idea, they formed in 1955.
  8. Can you inform me where that is?
  9. Again, where books come in useful Part 54 . "Baltimore Sounds" lists the Tangiers / Tangeers as initially: Cora Boykins, Bobby Covington, Richard Quarles, Earl Beale, and Bill Hagie. Boykins was later replaced by Elaine Jones. By 1970 the group disbanded and Quarles and Jones became Over Easy (no recordings that I know of). The TNJs are a different group from Trenton and were led by Elijah Jones and, as well as their own 45s, did back up vocals for various Philly records including Bunny Sigler. They are on his "Love train" for example. Instant Funk (also from Trenton) are a different group again (they too did back ups on Philly Records). They started as Music Machine. In that incarnation they actually backed up the TNJs on some of their recordings. I have a TNJs record from 77/78 (quite obscure), which further shows that they were separate groups. It is possible, but merely speculation, that one member of the TNJs could have been in Instant Funk at some point, since they were both from the same town, but I have seen zero evidence of this. Hope that helps.
  10. Yes there was a Bradley Recording studios acetate of one of their O'Keh singles on eBay a few years ago. I did think of bidding on it so I could put it in my book, but in the end didn't for some reason.
  11. 100% right- I have seen an acetate......you need to buy my book LOL.
  12. Sorry but I always get "wound up" when I see these "rarest US soul singles" charts. It should say "Rarest well known northern soul singles as far as I know" as of course it will always be limited by the author's own knowledge. There are tons of rarer singles than any of those listed (inc Frank Wilson.) At this point I think I'll get my coat.
  13. Apologies, didn't see that your post was 10 years ago LOL.
  14. Is that including my copy Agent45?
  15. Blackpoolsoul - There is some coverage of this group and Sago in my book Scepter Wand Forever!
  16. One of the unsung heroes of Chicago music.
  17. Ive played it occasionally at the few northern venues I work, always packs the floor.
  18. Hi, that must be it then Steve.
  19. The oldies events were very popular, this was a review of the Saturday niter.
  20. Frankie Beverly on Fairmount for E9.50 bargain!!!
  21. I haven't really played it out for a few years now John. Nesting on the shelves as they say.
  22. More interesting for me is that JM has turned up another copy of the Jones Girls on Music Merchant test press. An old play at crossover venues off of a test press, it just proves the comment about you never know if something is a one or two off or not. I am of course also disappointed
  23. Well I don't think I've never seen one and would certainly be interested as a collection filler Dave.
