  1. Is this the last known sighting of Soussaan then?
  2. Yes but Morris Levy is long since dead . And anyway the IRS and FBI spent hundreds of hours in his offices pouring over the books. They had a permanent base there when he was "under investigation". Talking bout the "Mob" BTW has anyone read the MCA book yet?
  3. Without writing a book on the subject you can summarise roughly, and I say roughly since there is never any golden rule that applies to something like this and there have always been people willing to take a shortcut to try and gain short term dancefloor popularity. There are also regional differences. For example in London there has always been a seemingly endless supply of people setting up soul do's and playing boots: -1960's Music largely played on UK release a few imports, increasing as the decade went on. - Early 1970's - Loads of imports on OV. Loads of new discoveries coming through from Soul Bowl, Levine, SS, and a host of others. Still some UK releases. Probably some early boots played at soul nights, - Mid 70s "WIgan explosion" - Niters / Dayers playing OV + EMIdiscs (purpose made acetate copies like Carvers today) of "in demanders". Soul Nights depending on where you were playing either OV, Boots or a mix. Think a few boots played by what I'd class as "2nd division Wigan DJs" (the fillers rather than the main "names"). - Post Wigan / Stafford / 100 Club etc. OV still rules at Niters / Dayers. Mod revival nights / weekends loads of boots / reissues etc. Today: Well you know the answer to that....
  4. John is referring to Butch when he says that. Everyone knows that surely? Way ahead the best record collection amassed of any soul DJ - un-catchable, and able to put together fabulous sets.
  5. Can confirm that they didn't do an LP. Steve
  6. Its logical to assume that there are or have been test pressings of most things, the obvious difference is the acetate is the output of the recording studio session, and a test pressing the output of the pressing plant. I'd imagine most test pressings are thrown away as soon as they're done and checked.
  7. At last here's the link to the show.....some excellent stuff from Kent Records and all available! https://www.mixcloud.com/steve-guarnori/sunday-morning-soul-kent-records-30th-anniversary-special/
  8. My next monthly Sunday Morning Soul show goes out on Sunday 6th January at 10.a.m. on Solar radio. (Sky 0129). This month we're featuring legendary songwriter / producer Ken Williams. With an amazing pedigree of songs to his name I caught up with Ken just before Xmas so you can hear about some of the groups he worked with (and there are many!) including one that had a singer that looked liked Doctor Spock! I'll be playing plenty of his productions and songs from Bobby Treetop, Spellbinders, Superiors, Main Ingredient, Margaret Reynolds, J.R.Bailey, Chuck Proffitt, Ike Lovely etc etc. You'd be amazed at how many great records Ken was behind. Steve
  9. Interesting, was in touch with him a couple of weeks ago. He did some fabulous productions over the years.
  10. I didn't realise Dear Glove had it that far back.....I am certain he didn't have (m)any for sale.....or else I would have picked it up then rather than a couple of years ago.
  11. Watch out for dodgy remixes on this one!!
  12. Hi Richard, I am not sure which is the rarest, just noticed both label titles....
  13. A little "twist" to this from the label completist The Lovelites was issued both as "Get it" and "Get him" off my conscience..... Steve
  14. So the REDS weren't so much "modern soul", as Grapevine's attempt at contemporary soul of the time. You'll see that the Grapevine 2000 label did exactly the same thing with a "red" series earlier this century. They also came out while the label was still in existance 79 /80. Didn't the last yellows come out in 81? Brinstone Ingram - was a Fee production (John had previously produced Leo Lyons "Set me up baby" for the label and knew Woody Wilson who owned it etc.) An article I wrote here: https://www.toodarnso.../Fee Part 2.pdf RED 3 was issued in response to demand for import copies of Leo's Sunshipp from the London crowd. RED 2 - John did tell me once what it was planned to be, but it never got issued as Steve P says. Steve
  15. Actually Nick, Doc Peabody Part 2 is quite neat - not a straight instrumental, it's like a jazzy workout with great strings, guitars and organ and more of that wailing. Certainly worth putting on the playlist for Sketchley Grange Sunday....if I didn't want to play Part 1! Pro Fascination was originally played for the other side "Try love again" - Rotters Sheffield I think was the first place I heard this c.81/82. What's this Horse & Groom - crossover night?
  16. Look the guy was one of the first people to be allowed into the chocolate factory. So obvious then that he'd find lots of chocolate lying around. Stop being such a bunch of sentimental fools about this horrid specimen.....Bah Humbug!
  17. Indeed + welcome to all this love again. I'll go and find the pink copy later Wayne. Thing is, these things were totally unknown at the time, no internet, and nobody knew whether any more would ever turn up. No one here had ever played any of the tracks etc. So ya bought them while they were there. If you didn't you might not see them again.....but the internet changed all that.. .
  18. Strewth, having read that tirade it is obvious that he was completely mad as well as being a thief and rip off merchant. What a sad individual he really was.
  19. Yes quite right, red / pink label came first. Two years earlier. Track listing is slightly different - not "poor" at all Wayne. What happened was that John A had a small run on the album (pink copies) that he got from Dyson himself - 15-25 copies which he sold @ £15 each. I remember him saying the run was short and he probably wouldn't get any more. Stuart, I and 13-23 others brought them within a week of them arriving in Kings Lynn; it was one of those where John put a copy on the "pile" of everyone who was turning up that he thought had taste.....we championed the album in Blackbeat at the time too.
  20. Dyson was putting stuff out as and when he could, adding tracks etc. Not uncommon, they are on his label and he probably sold them locally at gigs etc. I did know the full story once, I'll see if I can find it.
  21. Neil did you get it in the end?
  22. Yes I can confirm it was NOT Pete.
  23. Shute! The intro is the best part of the whole darn thing! She sure as heck can't sing......If they had X Factor back then she'd be one of those gals on the warm up audition show for sure....
  24. Don't care what any old timers say on here but NOTHING beats queuing up for 25 minutes on a Tescobank phoneline waiting to talk to someone when yer credit card company has bounced a payment authorisation in a store. And then the silly anti fraud questions that they insist are designed to protect me - when they are really protecting themselves! Sorry for hijacking yer thread but I couldn't resist it! Wigan queues legendary.
  25. Those were the days eh Ian? I got caught with one of those too Steve when I was a kid from some tosser in Wolverhampton. I asked for confirmation of a stamped original and he sent me the dodgy stamped 2nd press. We only had mail then, no email and no mobiles and he never answered me after that.
