Which Celebrities Have You Seen Dancing At A Soul Night
BrianB replied to Steve Brown's topic in All About the SOUL
Turning it round a bit, my lad Paul B DJd at Duffy's 21st in London. He said it was a good night with a few celebs having a do at dancing. -
Hi Dave, I still have all my B&S from I think mid 71 to end 75 and some Black Magic in my loft. No idea what condition they are in, but you are welcome to them if you want. (They are under my Rover and Wizard comics from 66 to 70!). Cheers, Brian

Superb. Well done to everyone concerned.

This might sound a bit daft, but I can't believe the sublime Lorraine Chandler agrees with me on this. Stevie is so soulful, but I honestly believe, and I am not trying to be ingratiating, that Lorraines voice is one of the most soulful and plaintive I have ever heard.

I was hooked by this Stevie Wonder record in 1969. This has always meant SOUL to me. I also heard Do What You Gotta Do today by the Tops and that blew me away. I know its not a Bernadette or 7 ROG but Levi just has SOUL. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1d48n4ESFgE&feature=related

Thanks Guys for the info. I'm not really into the Stax stuff, but the excitement of this tour has lived with me since I first heard Soothe Me live in 68/69 and I had not previously seen any live footage of it. However, I also hadn't been looking for it, so I suppose I shouldn't be too surprised! Having said that, I have just played the Paris show and Eddie Floyd and Carla Thomas were brilliant, but then again, it wasn't the too brassy Stax sound that I'm not too keen on. Still, a major part of Black American music being played on our shores/Europe, and was responsible for a lot of us eventually going down the rare soul route. Thanks again, Brian B

I have just watched some footage on You Tube of the S/V Tour of Europe in 67 live in Norway. For some reason I can't post a link but this is a cut and paste of the title from a guy called Johnde Haure.,,,,Stax Volt Tour of Norway 1967 It is in 6 segments of around 9 mins each. It might have been mentioned on here before, but what excitement and the musicians/artists are just unbelievable. I have the LP S/V live at Finsbury Park, and the CD S/V live in Paris, but I can't believe this footage was available and I never knew. If you just love Try a Little Tenderness its on "episode" 6 and is unmissable. Brian B

Hi Again Lorraine, Can you tell me the link if any, between Eddie Parker and Billy Sharae? In the early 70s in Burnly, my home town, there was a rumour they were brothers and had recorded each others records. Just played tell Me You're Mine. Absolutely brilliant performance. Brian

Hi Lorraine, I have only just found this thread and to say I am suprised/happy/blown away would be something of an understatement. I first heard I Can't Change by Yvonne Baker in 74 and then heard your version pretty soon afterwards. Normally I tend to stick with the first version I hear of any record, (I prefer Kim Weston Helpless to the Tops, even though the Tops recorded it first), but not once I heard you singing it! I then managed to buy I Can't Hold On in 75. What a record. It really has everything. A few years later after I had sold all my records, I heard Tell Me You're Mine. It completely blew me away. What a singer I thought......and then I heard What Can I Do! To this day it still holds my attention in a way only a handful of records can. Then I was introduced to She Don't Want You and never realised that I once owned it! That sax and backing vocals!! I bought the Soul Superman LP by the Hesitations. Probably the best album ever. What could beat this? Then Ady unearthed You Only Live Twice and I nearly bloody fainted. I knew it was LC as soon as i heard the first words. I have been a huge fan of yours since 74 and think your 5 Northern tracks are 5 of the best the scene has ever played. You have also been responsible for writing some unbelievable stuff for other artists. Welcome to Soul Source, but more than that, I am so pleased that even though you know a few soul fans in the UK and have been aware of the scene for years, maybe now you will understand the esteem you are held in in the UK and other countries. I hope your family see all the replies too, because they should know and understand the effect you have had on so many peoples lives. You have certainly affected my life and I am so happy that you are here on Soul Source. I once held Brenda Holloways hand as we were both singing Starting the Hurt All Over Again, an absolute dream come true for me. I dare to dream that you will come to the UK again and I will be present when you sing any of your songs and once again receive the adulation you deserve. Brian B

My Lads do The Beat Boutique had a huge poster featured in last Wednesdays Corrie. The boys were looking for a stolen motor home and they stood next to the poster. Not sure this counts?

Not a very good argument Russ. Its always happened so that makes it right and why should I get over it? The music is ours not DJs. The comment earlier is quite thought provoking...take your records into your coffin so no one will ever know what they are. Where do you draw the line on depriving us guys who have kept the scene alive in one way or another for 45 years from knowing what a record is, who it is by and being able to listen to it when and where we want, not at the whim of the one guy who has the record but doesn't own the song? I have never been able to see the logic of cover ups and never will. I repeat, the reasoning that it makes the record somehow "better" because it is covered up is strange. Brian B
-
I can remember being in Mr Ms in the mid 70s and one of the DJs mentioned that Mike had died. However, I thought he mentioned that a motot cycle accident in Greece was the cause? Was that Mike, or can anyone remember anyone that this might refer to? He was a great DJ with some style. Brian B
-
A well thought out response but one I must disagree with. I think you are being most unfair in your criticism of DJs and the power of the inernet to allow us to listen to our music (yes ours, not DJs) in a way that was unthinkable only 5 years or so ago. Also, one comment that has been repeated is that covering a record up somehow adds to its qualities and makes it more alluring to some. I don't think that logic adds up. However, I am really enjoying this thread, as my personal view is there are too many sub forums on here now, and it has diluted the pulling power of Soul Source, for me anyway. This thread has reignited my interest. Cheers Brian
-
I do not believe the subjects of cover ups to be contentious or a tricky issue.......its just plain wrong. I have the record ....you don't....I'm keeping it a secret in case you go and get it? Simplistic I know, but what about being a soul fan and letting everyone share the music. I know the reasons some will post, expensive trips to the USA, rooting round dusty shops etc, but to me, being the one to break that record should be enough. Just my thoughts, don't mean to be contentious myself. Thanks, Brian

Can We Have A Wheel Thread? I'd Like To Hear What Was Played
BrianB replied to Quinvy's topic in All About the SOUL
Hi Chalky, Pretty sure it was 73. If I can find it I'll get a copy to you. Only just found out last month on here what one of the records was that I have never heard since that night. Chris Hamillton Iv'e Got to Have Your Love! Brian -
Can We Have A Wheel Thread? I'd Like To Hear What Was Played
BrianB replied to Quinvy's topic in All About the SOUL
Hi Chalky, Sorry, they were not live tapes but his collection that he put onto tape for me. I still have one of them but it doesn't play. Loads of the stuff Brian lists was on them, and I can confirm Tell Me Its Just A Rumour was on as was loads of the Rict Tic stuff. I also bought Queen of Fools off the policeman before I had ever heard it played out. I know a few Wheel lads to this day and I have never been aware of a live tape from the Wheel. I would be really interested in one of those. The earliest tape I have is one I did down the Pendelum. Mark F and Pete S put it onto CD for me along with a load of Wigan and Blackpool Mecca ones. Sorry for the confusion, Brian -

I was given 2 C120 tapes by a guy called Philip Nowland, who I think was a policeman, but was a Wheel regular. He had a fantastic collection and most of what Brian lists were on these 2 tapes, recorded in September 1970 and given to me then. I still have the tape listings and will scan them when I get back to work. I am slightly surprised at some of the records that Swish doubts. They are commonly known to be not only Wheel records, but played at most Sunday night venues in East Lancs from 68/69 onwards. ATB, Brian -
74 was my first night at the Casino, but I had been into Northern for 3 or 4 years by then. We used to either get the bus after the Mecca or hire a mini bus from Burnley. The records and atmosphere was great, but if I couldn't make Wigan because of playing football on Sunday, we would just go somewhere else, admittedly not to an all nighter. I didn't at the time think I was going to Wigan, I was just going to a soul do, but eventually I did start to miss Wigan if I had a couple of weeks without going. I was 20 when I first went to the Casino and did 2 years or so. There were older lads down at first, we used to think they were ex Wheelers. The guys from Wolves seemed older than us so I think we classed them as Torchites. Slowly we became some of the oldest, and I did start to think that kids were appearing and generally taking over. The records did dip in 76, but there will still some fantastic discoveries. I did not like the "disco" split in the scene and hated the 70s stuff. When I came back onto the scene in 90 I swiftly realised that I had missed some awesome stuff, even though I regularly bought tapes off Pete Smith so kept abreast to a degree. I also bought loads of Kent LPs to keep up. I don't think the records that are discovered now are quite as good as 71 to 81 but I am still being suprised at the quality of some of the stuff I come across on You Tube and Refo soul. I like to hear new and different stuff and will never knock todays more diverse scene, but I echo another Burnley lad Dave Moore, in that if I had 1 trip to a soul do in the past it would have to be the Casino in74 to hear Larry Atkins telling me Ain't That Love Enough! If I couldn't get there it would be to the Mecca on the night that Steve Lane had his 17 inch vent turned into a 34 inch vent. That was funny. Could someone tell me if the guy in the photo above with a triangle on the front of his t shirt is John Roscoe from Burnley?

Brilliant record and brilliant thread.

Hi Kevin Bloody hell. Heard this once before in my whole life at the Pendelum. Manged to catch it on tape that night but have never known what it was called for all those years. Never heard it played out since. There is now only one record out there that I never hear, haven't got it on any format and no idea what it is called! Last heard it at the Burnley Circulation all dayer about 6 years ago and missed the DJ who played it. I listen for hours on You Tube/Refo Soul to try to find it but no joy. Only northern soul could do that to someone!

I mentioned Willie Parker earlier...did Don't Hurt The One You Love on M-Pac, not released over here, get much exposure? Brian
-
Never heard this before. Great record, and must have made it big had it been played. I never heard much of Willie Parker I Live the Life I Love. Big sound on Stoops Estate in Burnley (my house) but I don't think I ever heard it played out? Brian

Hi Phil, So where do the up and coming DJs who aren't in a "cartel" get their chance? Also, not everyone wants to travel to a venue. A lot of folk like a pint and the chance to listen to some great music. Not all the events are for rare soul types. Live and let live I say. I also don't think anyone would class 20 or 30 attendees as a good night and no pub/club would allow a night like that to carry on too long. I remember trying to book the Kestrel Suite for a Christmas do from work, and the date I had in mind clashed with Phil's all nighter. The then manageress, said no worries, she would cancel the all nighter, as they take no money over the bar and it wasn't worth putting the staff on. Obviously I didn't take her up on that!

Sorry guys having trouble posting the PDF image. Any suggestions anyone?

This attachment (hopefully) is a ticket for the Rare Soul Nights at the Rose Room that Tony Jebb started in September 1971. I was 16, nearly 17 and about 10 of us started going down as we liked Motown and stuff like The Tams BYBFBH. We were the only ones down but for around 15 lads from Blackpool and Accrington. These nights were my first proper Northern do's. Note the ticket saying Rare Soul as the term Northern Soul had not been coined at this time. The nights lasted about 6 months. I can still remember the records I heard at these nights for the first time. Zig Zag Lightning, Get out of my heart, My elusive dreams, Queen of Fools, A little bit of something, Too Late, Sandi Sheldon, I don't wanna discuss it, That beating rythmn, Cigarette Ashes, Please let me in, Real Humdinger, Backstreet, You just don't know, You gotta pay the price/To win your heart, Sufferin City, Baby Reconsider, You don't want me no more, I'm coming to your rescue, All turned on (still the best ever instrumental) Girl don't make me wait. The next in line, Whats it Gonna Be, Personally, Hey Sah Lo Ney and loads of others. Can you imagine hearing them for the first time at 17 all one after another and watching the Blackpool guys dance?
