  1. Contempt for a record that has never been released? Can, t wait to get off the floor......so what new and brilliant record is going to get you on the floor in the first place? To be honest, I have had enough of the school of thought that says a record that is overplayed is worthy of contempt. The scene needs to take a look at itself. 72, 73 and 74 saw most of the top records unearthed. These must also be contemptible these days. Why can, t we just listen to the music and if a tune comes on we don't like, go to the bar, or have a fag. Why post on here about it? This scene is losing it.
  2. The Determinations was a late Wheel record. One of my all time faves.
  3. If you thought the drugs in the movie were a bit over the top, you needed to visit Burnley from 74 to 77. It was unreal.
  4. I have this and it was rectified on later issues. I was offered £30 and the later issue for it around 12 years ago. I said no as the guy wasn't one to throw money around and he knew Tim Brown. I am not sure if it is worth any more because of the extra track. Marvin and Tammi's anthology/greatest hits from a few tears ago has a hidden intro to Ain't No Mountain, but I have forgotten the little trick you need to do to play it. I saw it on here some time ago? Brian B
  5. Hi Ian What type of sound quality can we expect from the CD? Will it be on a par with Kent etc, or more like some of the older Goldmine/others quality levels? I know the master tapes will not be available for a lot of the tracks, but I am really looking forward to hearing The Tomangoes, Freddie Chavez, Rita and the Tiaras etc sound far better than the existing CDs containing those and other tracks. (This isn't a criticism of some CDs and their manufacturers/complilers, as to be fair, these CDs were the only way at that time that I, and I presume a lot of others, could ever hear some of our music's rarer or more expensive sounds).
  6. Hi Kev Is there a non Kindle edition available..I suppose I mean a book! Ta Brian
  7. I just love the wonky sax break on There's No Stopping Us Now, and think a very similar break in I Guess I'll Always Love You is breathtaking. I think the only word I can think of to describe them is Melancholy. Also love Levi's voice breaking towards the end of Can't Help Myself. Really good thread.
  8. This thread just shows how good Motown was. Great topic. I've had my vote...does anyone like Do What You Gotta Do?
  9. I hear a symphony by Stevie Wonder. Unbelievable performance from Stevie.
  10. Just for the record, Tainted Love was not broken in youth clubs, but at venues such as the Pendelum, Catacombs, The Mecca and the Casino. It may have been played to younger enthusiasts when booted, but it was a record, as Pete says, that helped drive the Northern scene forwards in the early seventies. Too many people dismiss this type of record as "youth club" as through no fault of theirs, they were just too young to be on the scene. I believe this term has become derogatory, and imo shows more about the person classing the record as such, than it does about the song itself. To me its a classic intro, great vocals and a stand out track. The Cliff and EH version of the mighty Tempts is just laughable, again in my opinion.
  11. I have loved Stevie's version of this since I first heard it as a kid in 1969, but this version is just awesome. Top marks Quinvy!
  12. Of all the "new to me" records on here, this is far and away the best. Great choice.
  13. I Hear a Symphony, Stevie Wonder Do What You Gotta Do, The 4 Tops How Can I Ever Find the Way, Carol and Gerri Heartaches Away My Boy, Christine Cooper Plus Otis TALT live in Paris
  14. Give me some credit Jim....No it was I'm in Love. Thanks anyway, Brian
  15. I struck it rich, like a baby, its that time of the year, love, love, love, I, ll always need you, you baby, and the relatively new find on the kent cd say it all for me.. top, top singer, great material, with tremendous producers and musicians. I think I have missed one biggie, but am rushing this?
  16. He's just hit the news in a bad way, but it reminded me that Ugli Ray Teret used to DJ at the Burnley Whiskas as well on Sunday nights, or am I a bit off on that. I know he did a lot of Manchester clubs. The Birdcage at Ashton was a great venue!
  17. I have thought since 1970 that the bridge/hook was "we'll have long endless nights, we;ll have the time of our lives"!
  18. I loved the "record hunting in the States" thread that was re-activated around 2 years ago on here. The tales of Soussan, KR, and Ian D were just hilarious!
  19. I have always loved Girl with the Big Black Boots by the Paramounts. Very early Wigan spin but never heard it anywhere since. I always thought the title stopped it getting spins. Really atmospheric record at a packed nighter
  20. Worth going just for the Chants and The Contours. Top, top Wheel sounds that stand up today.
  21. Perlean Grey and Chuck Jackson...not heard them out for a long time. Top sounds almost at the beginning of the scene at the Torch and Wheel respectively.
  22. I couldn't agree more Simsy.
  23. Definitely one guy, if not more from Elaine's cast. I am quite surprised at the animosity in this thread towards a harmless pop song with some youngish dancers apeing the scene. People on here get too hung up on "protecting" our underground scene that has been overground since 1973....and the quote about not wanting them to exploit the scene is almost laughable. If you don't like it, don't buy it or don't watch it again.
