In this mornings Burnley Express there was a letter from none other than Pat Allen. He is back in Burnley after 11 years in Ireland. He reminisced about the Miners, and is trying to "re-establish the Soul Scene" and bring the "exciting scene to Burnley". He is also aware that "there are one or two lads still collecting the music" At the moment there are 3 regular Northern nights in Burnley each month. I hope he picks his week carefully. I bought B&S from 70 onwards. Firstly to learn and read more about Motown, then as I got into Northern the following year, to read Dave Godin, Frank Elson, and read the adverts to see what was being played and where. I never ever read about Funkadelic, Aretha, Soul Train, The Isle of Dogs gigs, any British artist, or anything that wasn't northern or Motown. I was young, but not ignorant, I just knew what I wanted and I knew what I didn't want. I haven't changed much musically. I still dislike most disco type 70ts, and just don't see how any modern record should be played at a Northern do. However, each to his own, and I encourage diversity of all types in every arena and facet. ATB BB

Great clip of Bobby Hebb. Love Love Love is my all time fave. I remember hearing that and Queen Of Fools, Too Late, Baby Boy etc at the Burnley Rose Room Tuesday night sessions from 71 to 72 when you came down with Tash and the team. Jebby was the DJ then.

I am used to people being knowledgeable after an event, but you lot on here know how good/bad/insightful/grossly wrong/authentic this film is before it has been made. Will you put my lotto on for me this week? It hasn't been made yet. Give it a bloody chance. Its frankly getting a bit embarrassing. Any business venture is a risk. I wish them luck, AND I hope they make loads of money from it.

I have never understood how the Who, The Jam etc can even be loosely connected with the Northern scene. Even going back to the Who in the 6ts, there were loads of groups who were more closely connected to the Mod scene. The Who were just more famous I suppose? Not looking to start anything, just my personal POV. Paul B and Jill have just come back from the dancing auditions. He says the producer and crew were keen to make it as authentic as possible. However, I suppose it has to appeal to others outside our scene, as around 10000 bums on seats mean a financial flop?

Hi Rod Bunny Sigler was massive in 74 as a revived oldie from the Wheel/Mecca, Darrell Banks was deffo played often in 74/75, and of course we had the Tempos, Little CC, Dobie Gray when Evison came down to Mr Ms. To All, I read in the Times this morning that Steve McQueen's bike in the Great Escape was a Triumph that was first made in 1963. We don't see film buffs or bikers clogging the media about that, so why are we so bothered about something that hasn't even been made yet? As Dale Carnegie said, "Never worry about things you can't change". Sit back and enjoy/criticise when it comes out, but this is over the top even for us Soul Sourcers.

Somewhere I have a tape from early 74. A guy, I think from Bolton, was dancing and a div kept getting in his way. The Bolton lad asked him to keep away, but the guy wouldn't. This went on for 5 minutes or so, when the Bolton guy shouted "Right!" Cue some strange noises, then the Bolton lad says, "Now f..k off out before I really start" The record playing is Beautiful Day as the div walked away holding his nose!

Have you thought about a sandwich board and a bowler hat for outside Kings Hall's auditions tomorrow at 10am? Its a film! 95% of non soulies who watch it won't even be aware there is still a scene.

...and there were aerplanes spotted in Ben Hur, Robin Hood wore a watch, wrong guns for the era in The Godfather, plastic bags on guns in Saving Private Ryan.... Give the guy a break! At least he is giving it a go. Its not going to be perfect, particularly for us on here!! And as for the comment on filming it in the current era? 40 to 50 year olds whinging before they go to a do, whinging at it, and whinging after it (and I include myself in that). I can see that being a blockbuster.

I've an idea. Lets put as many obstacles as we can in front of young soulies. Also ignore them, don't go to their do's, frown on everything they do and wear, and then the scene will be dead in 5 to 10 years, or it will be so laughable that no one will ever want to go. What a result eh?

Actually Ken, I have seen some of the new blood, and they love the music, dance well, have great dress sense, and whats more, they are really friendly. Why don't you go to the next Beat Boutique, admittedly cos my son is one of the promoters, I may be said to be biased, but I guarantee you will be suprised. Paul has been listening to Northern and Motown all his life, but only by choice from being about 20. He loves the music, wants to play it and wants to keep OUR scene alive for years to come. Why do Paul and his ilk get slagged off everytime someone mentions"young people on the scene"?

Does anyone know the vocal to Doin the Gittin Up by the Devonnes Band? It is on the Kent GWP CD. There is also a brilliant instrumental on there by Milton Bennet called Whats One More Lie. Does anyone play them out and about? Apologies if they are really common, but they are newish to me.
