The Rolling Stones "It's All Over Now" written by Bobby & Shirley Womack & first recorded by The Valentinos must be one of the most successful cover tunes - it was Mick & the boys first number one !!!
-
-
One of the last "traditional" Northern tunes played by CC at The Mecca & what a corker of a record it is !!!
Does it ever get played these days or is everybody still talking about the girl across the street ?

Its unreleased Andy an alt take which has a crossover slower mellow feel about it
Is it the "unreleased" one on the Anthology CD

......................... when these new releases become scarce in a few years time - that is when people will be bothered. A bit like the 70s when you could buy Ujima, Bill Brandon, Corey Blake etc. for less than a quid as new releases.

Bobby Womack ????

Jeesh have some of you lot been living in an alternative universe to the rest of us.. First Bob Sinclair and now no one knows what two step is..
Bob Sinclair & Two Step in one post !!! That would be a poser for Room 101.
It's called Two Step because of the distance you go from your chair..... in case you get a little tired !!!
-
Two Step is music that should be played on a radio show, on your sound system at home or maybe in the car.
It was never intended to be danced to !!!

"This Thing Called Love" - Cottage

Brenda Holloway should have been huge - such a better singer than Diva Diana !!!
& Lorraine Chandler - what a talent !!!!

I don't know the answer to your question and sorry to hijack thread but as well as hearing more on this I'd also like to read more about Ty Karim and her outstanding double vocal performance on the Towana & Total Destruction 45 (Wear your natural baby / Help me get that feeling) also on Romark.....Was that the only other release she sang her heart out on, or is there more? Thanks, Steve.

As for the second debate about it's validity to be played out I think that it should be separate topic. I love it (and own the 12 inch copy), and for me it is no different to say Blackpool Mecca playing The Trammps "Disco Inferno", Crown Heights Affair "Galaxy of Love" etc. (which is did) amongst the rare stuff.
The Highland Room ceased playing rare & Northern Soul at least 2 years before these records were played !!!!

The problem with all this is that everything "good, bad or indifferent" always gravitates to Wigan Casino.
It was a club which lasted 8 years in a scene which spans over 40 years.
My take is that Wigan 73-74 was still heavily influenced by The Torch & Blackpool Mecca - the "golden" era for Northern Soul IMHO.
1975-1979 the scene had then ceased to be underground & "the beat" took over - lots of what I thought unacceptable tunes being played.
Last 2 years of Wigan Richard managed to drag it back from "the abyss" & some great records were indeed played there.

I don't like 'modern soul' but I do like 70s northern soul.
It's all just soul music to me - too many tags put on the music.
Lots of fantastic soul music being released today - why is there a need of a 30 year void before it is appreciated !!

No need to be pedantic about the word 'modern' is there? Surely we all know that Nick was referring to what is generally accepted as the birth of what (rightly or wrongly) is called 'modern soul', ie 70's music. Obviously at any stage in history whatever is current at that time is modern.
Northern Soul is approximately 1963 - 1969/70 ish
& anything post 1970 is Modern Soul !!!!
Glad we have sorted that out then !!!
-
All depends on your definition of "modern soul"
How "old" were the records that were played at The Twisted Wheel ? They were mainly newish releases - ie "modern"
The Torch was playing records that were mainly 5-7 years old yet some people describe a record from 1975 now as still being "modern"

Nice version by Richard Williams on his "Where Do I Go " album on Quad Records.
-
Laine Hill - Time Marches On
The Embers - Watch Out Girl
Detroit Executives - The Cool Off
All popular once upon a time but probably well out of vogue nowadays
Detroit Executives sounds as good today as it ever did to me !!
