  1. GEMM have had a few copies recently - might still be some left.
  2. Had a bit of a cult following at The Highland Room circa '73 via Mr. Levine. Think "cult" is the word I am looking for.....or something very similar
  3. Seem to think it was a closing theme on one of the pirate radio stations - was it Caroline or Luxembourg ? No doubt the better informed will tell us.
  4. "Sam does it again.........................................................." Much as we all respect Sam there a lot of djs on the Soulful Dance scene who played this record nearly 18 months ago. I always forget that until the northern scene thinks a tune is good it is generally dismissed as that "disco/house/garage" rubbish. Lots more modern tunes out there to buy right now - but if you wait another two years you will be able to pay 3 or 4 times their current value.
  5. Love the naivety of the rock/soul drumming on "You Just Don't Know" - Chubby Checker & it seems to me that the drummer on "This Love Is Real" - Jackie Wilson/Promises falls off his stool halfway through.
  6. At least you stroke your chin in time to the music - a quality I hugely admire.
  7. New a girl up the Highland Room who thought Lou Edwards went......... "Talkin' 'bout Uncle" "Thinkin' 'bout Uncle" When Ian Levines tailor mades were played at Wigan a few people thought "Doomsday" sounded like "BRYLCREEM" over the Casino speakers.
  8. The new charge does indeed get a mention on the inside cover of the front page.
  9. Handed some On The Scenes out on December 27th at The Orwell.
  10. Funniest thing I ever saw at an early spot was when a wannabe DJ played "Baby A Go Go" - Barbara McNair off a dodgy CD. Went up to the decks to have a nosey & saw a Motown record spinning on the turntable with the needle hovering about half an inch above the disc. You can fool some of the people...............
  11. Al Hudson - SOLD. Rest will be going on Ebay on Monday .
  12. Done early spots myself - like to play lesser known things - really LOVE it when somebody comes up & asks you a)" Play Girl Across The Street" " Got Any Northern Soul ?" c)" Do You Know What Northern Soul Is ?" or the best of all when not only do they expect you to spin records they ask you to do some Paul McKenna mind-reading act when they say "Play something we know".
  13. "And The Rains Came" - The Millionaires - plenty of whoo - hoo in there particularly on the intro. & of course not forgetting "The Whoo Hoo Song" - Jackie Wilson
  14. Not too keen on the records he produced but when you think of the records he broke at The Highland Room his contribution is immense. The golden era of Northern Soul IMHO was 73/74 & a lot of those tunes were brought to the fore by Ian. You only have to look at the Northern Soul top 500 book to see how many of those records are in there. I don't think Ian will ever win any popularity contests & many people found him unapproachable but he certainly made an indelible mark upon the soul scene in this country.
  15. A few seventies/crossover bits for sale. All these records were bought as brand new releases by one careful owner & have not done the rounds in the sales boxes. CHARISMA BAND - AIN'T NOTHING LIKE YOUR LOVE - BUDDAH (Issue) £350 AL HUDSON - I'M ABOUT LOVING YOU - ATCO (Issue) £200 AL CHRISTIAN - LONELY MAN - CHANT (Issue) £250 VIOLA EDWARDS - LOVE ME BABY - RENFRO (Issue) £200 SAM DEES - FRAGILE HANDLE WITH CARE - ATLANTIC (Issue) £125 VIOLA WILLS - THE FIRST TIME - BEMSOLE (Issue) £125
  16. As from February 2006 On The Scene magazine will cost £1.00 Is this good value? & will you be buying it? Discuss.
  17. "That's enough oldies for now - here's 2 hours of modern soul"
  18. If we are going down the comedy route how about Bill Bush "I'm Waiting" - now that record really is a joke.
  19. sounds like something that should be on the corporation tip
  20. Funnily enough there is a Room 101 at the Orwell. Soul Sam is threatened with incarcaration in there if he ever goes back to his "Blue Sharks/Burning Bush" dark days. The quality of tunes he plays nowadays guarantees his liberty.
  21. Anyone know the going rate for the following choons Al Hudson - I' m About Loving You Charisma Band - Ain't Nothing Like Your Love Al Christian - Lonely Man Al Waples - Moving On Thanks in advance
  22. When Paul Anka was covered up as Johnny Caswell - we accepted it - though I suspect Mr. Caswell may be white also - apologies if anyone knows different. After the grand uncovering we all still danced to it & didn't desert the dancefloor when it was known who the singer actually was. It had the right "vibe" then & still does. That is what this crazy scene is all about & that's why we love it.
  23. IMHO Soul is in the ear of the beholder. Records by Paul Anka & Danny Wagner have been eagerly embraced by the Northern scene & rightly so. In a perfect world every record we like should be by a struggling black artist from the back streets of New York or Detroit - but that is Northern soul Utopia & not realistically how it is. I think if we are all honest there is a liking for the odd "pop ditty" or three in all of us.
  24. Steve what is this "weakend" you refer to. Soul Source forums are not to be used for airing your personal problems. Cheers Andy
