  1. After reading & joining in with many topics on this site have come to the conclusion that in the main people only like & listen to Northern Soul .

It seems that anything that doesn't have a northern "bent" is heavily criticised & dismissed.

Do people only listen with a "Northern" ear?

Personally I listen to a tune & then decide if I like it or not - the fact that it may not be acceptable at an All-Niter at 4:30 am does not enter into my equation.

No doubt I will be accused of having a "Souliier than thou" attitude (again) but dates & labels mean nothing to me - it's what comes out of those grooves that count.

    Is it Northern or nothing?

  2. Its just another soulier than thou post IMO.

its always the same the 'all era loving' look down on those who are predominantly 60's based soul lovers, me i do like 70's but some of the 'disco' that is spun is usless and thats my opinion, so on a forum all about opinions on the 'northern' scene i voice that opinion, makes me laugh when you get the preachers telling you to open your minds/ears and love soul music, well heres news i do, but i like what i like and disco is tripe! oh im a poet too :D

now dont get me wrong here but some one realatively new to the scene, has gone to a couple of do's and noticed that there was a bit too much disco played, not all the 70's but some of it, now that speaks volumes to me!

Yes some of them fill the floor thats great, but no one excepts that what we are clearly hearing is disco, people may find it hard to see, because they think they are soul fans (and yes they are still soul fans) but just because its spun at a progressive venue, dont mean it is soul.....

I can admit i like some 60's sounds that aren't proper soul records, bont bother me how much soul a record has got as long as i like it.

Yes I DO like all eras of music The date of its recording is irrelevant to me - good music is good music full stop.

As for being "soulier than thou" - this forum is all about giving opinions - whether you agree with them or not is your worry.

BTW tripe & hike don't rhyme - not even in a bad disco record. :D:D

  3. Hold my hands up time chaps. It has finally dawned upon me - every soul record made before December 31st 1969 is utterly brilliant. Anything after that is disco cr*p.

Must be in a minority though as the biggest floorfiller in the last 2-3 years has been "Are You Ready For This" - The Brothers. Now when was that recorded?

Those naughty people up The Highland Room in the mid seventies have got a lot to answer for.:D

  4. Northern Soul - Matt Le Tissier - Brilliant but probably should have moved on.

Crossover Soul - Dennis Bergkamp - Classy but with just that bit of edge when needed.

Modern Soul - Ossie Ardilles - Quality but sometimes not easy to understand.

  5. If anyone can get truly excited about something this ordinary, I'd hate to be their heart rate when a really classy piece of modern soul comes along!

    TONE

Simmer down chaps - one mans "awesome" is another mans "awful".

I quite like it but hey ho it's only a tune & it's not gonna stop the world trying to blow each other up or bring my energy bills down. :D:yes:

  6. We used to fill a 50 seater coach easily from Blackpool , I was comfortable listening to 60s Wigan sounds alongside 70s new releases , and I'll admit to buying drainpipes from Oxfam and sandals from Tommy Balls

    Steve McWilliams

But you never danced to CA-THE-DRA-LS in them.:thumbsup:

  7. 2 great Crossover tunes for sale in excellent condition

Sam Dees - Fragile Handle With Care/Save The Love At Any Cost - Brilliant Double Header on US Atlantic - £125

Viola Edwards - Love Me Baby - Renfro - Best Version - £150

  8. Bet they do, Vinyl Carvers anyone?

IMHO Vinyl Carvers are worse than boots/reissues/cds.

Ooops forget, we would miss out on those "WONDERFUL" Funk Brothers Motown instrumentals DO I LOVE THEM - INDEED I DON'T.:shades:

  9. Frank Wilson? How many original copies? Certainly not enough for the amount of times the record has been played & danced to over the last 20 years. Never heard a promoter say over the mic. "Unfotunately Mr. Kenny Burrell is not appearing here tonight - please do not offend the DJs by asking for Frank Wilson as none of them have it."

I totally agree that original is best in both credibility & sound quality . However I have a problem with people who totally dimiss CDs.I don't mean "Dale Wintons - Now That's What I Call Northern" compilations. I am talking about quality previously unreleased stuff from Motown - RCA etc. I think the whole idea of releasing them is so people can hear them properly & not off some dodgy acetate that some top jock is playing.

The last Cellarful of Motown had two blinding (previously unreleased) tracks by JJ Barnes - they of course will never get played - that is a crying shame.
