I was answering somebody who said after '75 Blackpool Mecca became a New York Disco. The list I gave disproves his comments. Hell - Stevens & Foster for example wasn't even released until '77.
If you want to talk about disco - what about The Brothers "Are You Ready For This. An out & out "Disco Record" (from NEW YORK) which was "Mecca Crap" back in the day & now it is arguably one of the biggest tunes over the last five years (based purely on dancefloor reaction) a "Northern Classic" or am I missing something here?
Oviously you don't remember post 75 records like
Stevens & Foster
Betty Lloyd
Charisma Band
Brothers Guiding Light
Luther Ingram
Bessie Banks
Norma Jenkins
Corey Blake
Millie Jackson
And there's more.............................
This has to be the worst ever - they even use the Eiffel Tower
I presume the "dog turd" on it is supposed to represent a black fist.
HEATHENS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Nice to see Gwen Owens "Wanted & Needed" finally made it into the chart @ 509 - can't believe it didn't make the original 500 list - suppose "quality" tunes like Wynder K Frogg & Judy Street kept it out.
The tune is actually called "Save Room" - it uses more or less the same backing track as "Stormy" - quite popular on the Northern scene via The Supremes version a few years back.
Have to say "Mainstring" sums up The Highland Room to me more than any other record played there.
That fabulous piano intro still gives me an unbelievable buzz - one of the finest soul records ever. AWESOME AWESOME AWESOME .
Have to agree with Plumby "Sir Oscar" - always give good value on his tunes - his 'B' sides are immense.
It was indeed the instrumental side - IMHO knocks the socks off the vocal or are you the sort of person who plays the vocal of "Girl You Better Wake Up" or the even more hideous vocal of The Boogieman Orchestra? Only asking
