  1. Sold a lot on the modern dance scene already - the record is about 4 years old & has had many remixes & issues particularly in the last eighteen months,
  2. Bit like Paul Anka - Len Barry - Frankie Valli - Danny Wagner - Freddie Chavez - Dana Valery - Timi Yuro etc. etc. ..............................as you say no relevance at all to soul music - but bloody good nonetheless!!
  3. My favourite Crossover tune of all time - simply stunning !!!
  4. Ian This is a forum on which ideas & opinions are offered up. If somebody gives an opinion about something & you don't agree that is tough. The truth is Ian I contribute on here regularly tipping music & generally "joining in" unlike you, who only bothers when you think it involves you. You may not like the term "tailor made" but it applies to certain records you have been involved with & they are perceived as such - you will have to live with that I am afraid. The facts are Wigan's Ovation did a cover version of "Skiing In The Snow" - The Exciters (along with you) did cover versions of "You're Gonna Make Me Love You" & "Love You Baby" - all of which I consider to be tailor mades - which ones are good, bad or indifferent is not in question. Because I don't agree with everything you do & say Ian, does that really make me "the bad guy" ? If so C'est La Vie - I will just have to accept that. As regards being ashamed of coming from the same town as me - I remember when you used to live here championing contemporary quality black dance music. I still live on the Fylde Coast championing contemporary quality black dance music - which one of us has changed?
  5. Believe all asbestos has been removed from the building (safety issue) - I know that some pieces of The Highland Room dancefloor have been "liberated" by certain individuals - better watch Ebay in the coming weeks (how sad) !!!! I only live 3 miles from The Mecca so will keep people posted as to what is happening - just off to FloorsRUs to get my "original Highland Room laminate flooring" - tee hee.
  6. No - Game Players was a bona fide 70s release which was played on the Northern scene. Still sounds good to IMHO.
  7. Anybody who writes lyrics like that deserves time in the "cooler"
  8. Something along the lines of his cell being 6 by 6 - & that is why the instrumental is infinitely better!!
  9. From November 1963. The aforementioned 16 Big Hits compilation. MT-614 - A Package of 16 Big Hits - Various Artists [11/63] (4-64, #84) Original cover of this album had a picture of a package stamped with the names of the songs and the artists. The second cover had no package and "A PACKAGE OF 16 BIG HITS" at the top and the titles and artists underneath. This album was released in stereo in August 1966 as MS-614. The stereo version contains the true stereo alternate take of "Please Mr. Postman" which had appeared on The Marvelettes' Greatest Hits a few months earlier, and a true stereo alternate take of the Contours' "Do You Love Me?" Come And Get These Memories - Martha & Vandellas (S)/Beechwood 4-5789 - Marvelettes (S)/The One Who Really Loves You - Mary Wells (S)/Jamie - Eddie Holland (E)/Stubborn Kind Of Fellow - Marvin Gaye (E)/Contract on Love - Little Stevie Wonder (S)/Do You Love Me - Contours (S, alternate take)/Shop Around - Miracles (M)//Money - Barrett Strong (E)/Pride And Joy - Marvin Gaye (S)/Please Mr. Postman - Marvelettes (S, alternate take)/You Beat Me To The Punch - Mary Wells (S)/You Really Got A Hold On Me - Miracles (S)/Love Me All The Way - Kim Weston (S)/Sunset - Little Stevie Wonder (S)/Your Heart Belongs To Me - Supremes (S)

  11. I like a well constructed & thought provoking comment like that about probably the most influential black music record label in the world ............................. care to expand your thoughts & reasons why you feel that way?
  12. There is a version which Ian Levine did with a bit of a vocal in it - which adds nothing to the original Earl Van Dyke classic IMHO.
  13. The phrase you are looking for is "tailor made" - as in a tune created to sound like an authentic - usually "sixties sounding" Northern Soul record. If you followed the recent Ian Levine thread you should know what I mean. The Sharonettes The Exciters LJ Johnson Barbara Pennington Doris Jones Wigan's Ovation The Chantelles Paula Roussell plus various "truly awful" instrumentals of Northern classics put out by Simon Soussan in the mid seventies. To be honest not many worth bothering with IMHO but one or two have made their mark on the scene.
  14. You can get the single for about £3.00 - loads of copies of the album on Ebay & Gemm for about a tenner. South Shore Market in Blackpool used to have all the Sugar Billy "Fast Track" singles for about 30p in the late seventies - happy days!!
  15. Yes Brett - that Eric Knowles has done alright for himself!!!
  16. https://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=WJMPS4uCQdU Written by Stevie Wonder Performed by JJ Barnes Recorded for Motown 'NUFF SAID!!!!
  17. Think we are batting on the same side Tony - my list of tunes illustrates to the "Stevie Wonder is rubbish" crew that he patently is not. Whilst contemplating that let us not forget the incredible handicap the guy has lived with all his life!!
  18. I disagreed with the following (your words) If we are talking SOUL, and not Northern, then i have to agree Stevie is GENIUS. I was pointing out that Stevie Wonder does have a place within "Northern Soul" as you seemed to make out he didn't.
  19. I disagree................ Angel Baby Just A Little Misunderstanding All I Do Tears Of A Clown Everybody Needs Somebody (I Need You) My Love Is Your Love Can You Love A Poor Boy It's A Shame .............just a few of the tunes that Mr Wonder had a hand in - think there is definitely a bit of "Northern" interest in these & that is without listing some of his own "Northern" recordings ie :- Uptight Nothings Too Good For My Baby Castles In The Sand Contract On Love I Want My Baby Back Please take a bow Mr Wonder because IMHO you are not too shabby at all. PS - "Songs In The Key Of Life" - f there ever was a Desert Island Disc - that is it !!
  20. My pet hate - people who insist on clapping OFF the beat
  21. Think I have heard a tape of one of the "last nights at Wigan" with the three before eight being played - large dose of the clap in all those tracks - particularly impressive on Tobi Legend.
  22. Is Motown Any Good? Of course it is - warts & all. Think just about everybody on this site discovered soul music via Motown & it's influences on the music we all love is immense & should never be underestimated.
  23. Not sure about the writer - sold my copy many moons ago.................. at the end of the record Mr Stansbury is wailing - "she took my shirt, she took my tie & said bye bye bye..........she took the whole thing" etc.
  24. Yea was/is a good tune - kind of funky floater - not heard it played out for a long time.
  25. Sorry to say that Derek & Ray was played at a time when "anything with a beat" became acceptable to the Northern crowd & any quality control on the scene had long gone. A dreadful piece of music & definitely one of the worst records ever played - if you want to hear a good instumental then listen to G Davis & R Tyler "Hold On Help Is On The Way" - now that's what I call an instrumental.
