  1. "Breeze On By" - Donny Osmond - actually not as bad as you might think. Did get one or two spins in modern rooms when it came out in 2004.
  2. IMO good record - not great!! Biggest problem with it these days is that it has become synonymous with the current "badge buying - white label double sider reissue - spencer soul bags & beer towels still look good brigade" They generally frequent "oldies only - keep the dancefloor full at all costs venues" The night for them is a "total washout - the worse DJs ever - they will never attend the venue" again unless the obligatory Frank Wilson is played!
  3. Will try & find it this weekend & let you know.
  4. Part of the "Golden Age" of Northern Soul - 1971 to 1974. Without doubt there were more quality tunes discovered & played in this period than any other time on the scene.
  5. Have you not heard - they got divorced.
  6. In fairness he does have a genuine love of soul music - how many people can boast that, amongst others, Luther Vandross sang at their wedding. The guest list for Liza Minnelli & him was like a who's who of soul.
  7. Was supposed to do Blackpool Opera House last year - until a "back injury" made him cancel the tour - my wife & her friend bought tickets (suspect demand for tickets wasn't too high) - think the show would have still been OK without him !!
  8. Surprised there are no tunes like Anderson Brothers- Voices Of East Harlem - Crown Heights Affair - records that "broke the mould at Blackpool Mecca". Have an audio cassette tape somewhere of Les Cokell doing an "oldies" spot at Miracles All Dayer - Blackpool Mecca 1975 - he is playing tunes like David & The Giants - Kaddo Strings - Rose Batiste - Earl Grant etc. When playing Lee Andrews he says "Here's Lee Andrews & I've Had It - Lucky Fellah" - great memories of a great guy. Also on the tape are Colin & you playng tunes like Joe Frazier - East Coast Connection - Kim Tolliver etc.
  9. Saw this on Answers.com. - think the researcher isn't really up to the job!!. Along with Fiachra Trench, his songwriting partner, Ian Levine helped develop the Hi-NRG dance sound courtesy of hits such as "High Energy" by Evelyn Thomas, "So Many Men, So Little Time" by Miquel Brown, and "(I Can't Believe It) It's a Miracle" by Moonstone. Levine, born in Blackpool, worked as a producer and songwriter as early as the '60s (he also wrote "Black Pearl" by Checkmates Ltd.). By the 1970s, he began recruiting American soul singers like Evelyn Thomas and Hazell Dean to storm Britain's charts (and occasionally, America's). ~ John Bush, All Music Guide
  10. Bought it back in the seventies -always championed this tune - a fantastic record - very underrated - if it was seriously rare would be as popular as "Hey You Don't Fight It"
  11. On the contrary I thought "Tears Of A Clown" was an excellent choice - it typifies everything that is good about sixties Motown.
  12. Think what you have to understand is that the Northern scene has always had its fair share of "smoke & mirrors". The music is like the people we meet - good & bad, genuine & fake - the real trick is to decide which is which.
  13. Think it is just one of those records that if you have it you don't want to part with it. 2 reasons :- 1) You won't make much money out of selling it. & more importantly 2) It's bloody brilliant !!
  14. Threads like this amuse me - many ways of looking at this - think what really angers people is the thought they have been "had". All of a sudden the record becomes less desirable because of its "history" "You can fool some of the people........................................"
  15. Agree with what has already been said - I have no desire to see our ageing "heroes" anymore - I prefer to remember them when they were "at the top of the tree".
  16. Another track off the Brenda Boykin CD - "Freedom Song" is one of the best tunes of the year - it is absolutely stunning !!
  17. Do you mean something like spelling !!
  18. Problem is the Overplayed/Hammered To Death tunes are just what the people who frequent these events want to listen to - it's all the records they have on their HMV/Morrisons bought compilation CDs. A weekender wouldn't be complete without a bit of Frank Wilson !!!!!
  19. When in doubt go to Wikipedia - not too far off the mark methinks. Soul music is a music genre originating in the United States combining gospel music and rhythm and blues. According to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, soul is "music that arose out of the black experience in America through the transmutation of gospel and rhythm & blues into a form of funky, secular testifying."] The genre occasionally uses improvisational additions, twirls and auxiliary sounds. Catchy rhythms, stressed by handclaps and plastic body moves, are an important feature. Other characteristics are a call and response between the soloist and the chorus, and an especially tense vocal sound.
  20. I take it that old 8mm reel I have of you & Jim Hargreaves doing "The Bump" at Ansdell Institute will be of no use to you then.
  21. See that an artist (Evelyn Thomas) mentioned in this thread has some new product out - not my cup of tea really but interesting though. https://www.juno.co.uk/ppps/products/1379514-02.htm
  22. Thankyou Ian for just answering part of my posting & not the whole of it. With total respect to the artists they are not what I consider contemporary anymore - indeed some of them have sadly passed away many years ago. I meant contemporary as in "music of today". Please tell me where on this thread or indeed any other I have said I don't think you have done your bit for soul music. This thread is about tailor mades. I merely gave a list of artists & people who I thought were responsible for tailor made records & when I did you took offence & vented your anger upon me. As I have said earlier, forums are about opinions - you have them & I have them & we both have a right in a free country to express them. In your daily life you must come across people who don't agree with you - how do you deal with them? or are they discarded by you & you merely surround yourself with sycophants who hang on your every word & deed? Certain people on Soul Source have made vicious attacks on you about your ethnicity & sexuality - I think that is totally wrong & I can honestly say my postings have not & will never sink to that level. Perhaps Ian, as I have said before, if you joined in more threads, given your vast knowledge, people may not judge you so harshly.Indeed, this week there has been a Blackpool Mecca & a Motown thread which you could have contributed to but chose not to.
