  1. Of course if the rig is set correctly by somebody who knows what they are doing you should be able to rely on what the desk is telling you with just a few minor adjustments to the input gains - I suspect some of the DJs only know 2 settings - ON & OFF !!
  2. Problem with most rigs is they are not powerful enough for most venues. Djs come on & put the volume control to max regardless of what is coming out of the speakers. If they were to look at the desk every once in a while they might see some nice flashing ligts - green - amber & red - treat them as you would traffic lights & that is how the equipment should be run. If you try to "bounce" sound off a wall 30 yards away & your rig isn't big enough all you are doing is amplifying distortion - which equals very poor (but loud!!) sound quality which also equals damage to ears & you can't nip down to your local hi-fi shop to get them repaired.
  3. Obviously ALL the people have access to pc's etc - It is not hard to use paypal, credit card or bank transfer to make an instant sale - there is NO excuse for not seeing through a record deal - after all NOBODY twisted their arm to commit to buy. When I use Ebay to "Buy It Now" the total transaction takes less than a minute - everybody's happy - that's how easy it is - all other deals should be (where possible) conducted in the same manner.
  4. If it's female it sounds like Jean Carn - (No, No) You Can't Come Back Now on Philadelphia International.
  5. Paul Anka sums up for me the weird & wonderful world of the Northern soul scene. I also don't think it is rubbish - lots & lots of worse records played than Paul Anka IMO.
  6. To me, Paul Anka "Can't Help Loving You" sums up Northern Soul perfectly . Where else in the world would teenage kids dance to a record in the early hours of the morning sung by somebody called Johnny Caswell but it is in fact by a 50s & 60s pop singer called Paul Anka, who incidentally wrote the lyrics to "My Way", & then call it Northern Soul !!!!!! ? Says it all to me. Bloody good record BTW.
  7. "Eavesdropper" is a particular fave for me on the Granite label. "I Have Faith In You" from his sixties period - pure class !!
  8. Both are true!!! I mess you not !!
  9. Never heard them (& I don't wish to) but the Albert Finney album & the single featuring "Granny" off The Beverly Hillbillies cannot be part of Motown's finest moments. My personal hate is "Tune Up" - Junior Walker, I thought you were supposed to do that before you start recording.
  10. Bet you have tapped your toes to "Law Of The Land" though.
  11. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TYD7zmapqRk The aforementioned "You're The One"
  12. "You're The One" off the Lost & Found album - sublime!!
  13. The same relevance MODs have to Ian's scene.
  14. Lyn Jerrard - Guarantee Of A Lifetime Esjae Gennice - Standing In The Darkness Ronnie Walker - Out Of The Shadows They were 3 tunes Ian has produced & were getting their first airing on his show.
  15. Try it by only including "proper" instrumentals - ie not backing tracks. Zola - King Errison Rhona's Theme - RPM Generation Soul Improvisations - Van McCoy (Full length album mix of course !!) Hold On Help Is On The Way - G Davis & R Tyler Lost Time - Popcorn Wylie Yeah You're Right............ - The Gaturs Midnight Brew - Melvin Carter Afternoon Of The Rhino - Mike Post Coalition
  16. You should always pay the DJs - or at least offer- regardless of the amount of people who come through the door. Have been to (& DJ'd at) quite a few gigs where you can see the promoter nervously pacing the floor knowing full well he may have to dip in his own pocket if the numbers he expected don't turn up. My take on it is this - the following may need to be done to get your night off the ground, Venue Hire - Almost certainly paid upfront. Flyers - Printer has been paid before the event. Door Staff (if required) - Whose NOT going to pay them. DJs - Should be paid (as agreed beforehand) regardless of numbers attending. Of the four ingredients above who is the one whose fee may suddenly become "negotiable" if the night is not a success? Simple answer is if you cannot fulfill all the criteria above don't bother promoting.
  17. Paul Anka - shouldn't be Soulful really - but a true anthem - brilliant !! Danny Wagner - I Lost A True Love (Northern Soul at it's very best!!) Shane Martin - I Need You Lynne Randell - Stranger In My Arms & not forgetting the wonderful George Soule - Get Involved.
  18. Looks like we are all agreed then - after much discussion Mr Wonder HAS in fact made some decent music since the 1960's. Next !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  19. I see weekenders as an extension of the All Dayers in the seventies. When Mecca & Wigan were the top clubs in the mid seventies The Ritz All Dayers in Manchester broght the two tribes together - both the DJs & attendees of each venue were there. Seem to remember that the favourite tunes of the day were played - not really a place to "break" new sounds - more a celebration of what was current. Of course tunes that had been spun the night before were played & that whetted your appetite for the next weekends visits to Blackpool & Wigan. Weekenders (apart from Southport) do pretty much the same these days - it is a meet up from all across UK & basically have a party. Think a lot of them are good value for money - noticed Barry that you are planning a weekender in Scotland next year - try to make it as competitively priced as Morecambe which is absolutely FREE!!!!! & has a genuine across the board music policy - Northern-Modern-Jazz Funk-Crossover-Two Step-House & everything else in between.
  20. Hair not withstanding - please explain to me where any part of the Benny Troy tune resembles soul music ? Think somebody mentioned the Love Boat theme earlier in the thread - can't see much difference between that & I Wanna Give You Tomorrow TBH !!
  21. Bobby Reed - The Time Is Right For Love/If I Don't Love You Epitome Of Sound - You Don't Love Me/Where Were You Edwin Starr - Time/Running Back & Forth Bobby Sheen - Doctor Love/Sweet Sweet Love
  22. Benny Toy might want to give me tomorrow................................. I want to give him a slap !!
  23. Historically Modern Soul has ALWAYS been played at Northern venues. Intrigues Niteliters Millie Jackson First Choice Tavares Brainstorm etc.etc.etc. - the list is endless !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  24. Yes Dave - it was you guys who first played it. Remember hearing it at an Accy All Dayer - bagged it the week later - super record.
