  1. Tis been getting lots of plays down south, but northerners wouldnt know that, would theywhistling

Agreed !!!! Us Northerners no nowt !!! Believe Lou Edwards had a couple of spins thirty odd years ago in the area where the M6 has cobblestones.

My underplayed (& always has been) tune is "Somebody I Know"- Wales Wallace. I suspect had this record been rare it would be a true collectors trophy piece.

  2. Yes Ill buy it So I can put it next to my nice nashville stamped original and educate a few people around here about why you shouldnt Dj with boots / Counterfeits.wicked.gif

In my opinion (& it's not a humble one this time) Maurice Williams is quite simply the greatest record ever played on the Northern Soul scene.

  3. Not The Marrying Kind - Kenni Lewis

Wake Up To The Sunshine Girl - Joey Delorenzo

Someday The Sun Will Sine - Deon Jackson

plus the unreleased Motown tunes discovered since Wigan - Lewis Sisters, Brenda Holloway, Barbara McNair etc.

Unreleased RCA stuff - Sharon Scott , Lorrainne Chandler - "You Only Live Twice" etc.

    September Jones unreleased tracks

The already mentioned "Love Finds A Way"

Think all the above would have seen some Station Rd dancefloor action

  5. :boxing:HI SOMEWHERE I WROTE ABOUT MY ACCOUNT OF THE LAVINE IS SHIT A FEW MOTHS BACK IF YOU WANT TO DIG IT OUT? ALSO THE FIRST BADGES WERE ABOUT 1 1/2" WHITE CIRCLE, HAND WRITTEN "LAVINE IS SHIT" THEY HAD A SAFTY PIN ON THE BACK, I SAT IN THE RECORD BAR AND MADE THEM MYSELF, AS I SAY THIS IS MY PART IN AT THE START, IT WAS A TIME WHEN THE OLD STALWARTS OF THE MECCA AND ALL IT STOOD FOR, FELT THAT THE FAITH HAD NOT BEEN KEPT AND IANS BLATENT REFUSAL TO PLAY SOUNDS THAT HE ALONE OWNED, IN FAVOUR FOR RECORDS THAT ANYONE COULD BY FROM RECORD CORNER? DAVE KIL

    Who's Lavine??????????????

  6. Back in 1977 - The Highland Room had some new decks fitted. My brother "liberated" one of the old decks - it was just propped up on the little stage where Levine & Curtis spun the tunes - end of the night it somehow made its way under his coat.

Think of what tunes had played for the 1st time on that deck - that is what you call "proper" memorabillia !!

Not saying where it is now,but I see it every week !!

  7. Still one of my Favs and was playing this on my decks at home - Wheres that Pic from because my album doesnt have that pic and my single is a white demo with no pic sleeve.

Watching Epic slide alcross the highland room as well evokes memories. Hairs on my neck stand up when I hear this as it really gets you thinking about when you were in your late teens.

Didnt we used to dance with a girl when this came on at the Mecca or was that at Blackpool Casino.

    Difficult to explain the dance.

Great memories of a great record - Haigh, Naylor & Lett grooving along to The Rimshots - sliding from side to side until the all important "Do, Do Do What You Feel" chorus blasted from the Highland Room speakers - then it was on the spot, up on your toes - head bobbing up & down legs kicking out in front of you.

Fantastic period in mine & everybody else's life who loved the Mecca so much back then.

  8. and I bet a good number of those who've been DJ'ing 20 / 30 years have hearing problems anyway so standing behind the decks, middle of stage with a speaker either side of pointing out to the room (usually) and being a bit mutton probably makes you the worst person - in the worst position to judge how the music sounds to the rest of the room but so many of them jack it up like you say... daft really.

    Jayne.x.

Of course if the rig is set correctly by somebody who knows what they are doing you should be able to rely on what the desk is telling you with just a few minor adjustments to the input gains - I suspect some of the DJs only know 2 settings - ON & OFF !!whistling.gif

  9. Problem with most rigs is they are not powerful enough for most venues. Djs come on & put the volume control to max regardless of what is coming out of the speakers. If they were to look at the desk every once in a while they might see some nice flashing ligts - green - amber & red - treat them as you would traffic lights & that is how the equipment should be run. If you try to "bounce" sound off a wall 30 yards away & your rig isn't big enough all you are doing is amplifying distortion - which equals very poor (but loud!!) sound quality which also equals damage to ears & you can't nip down to your local hi-fi shop to get them repaired.

  10. Obviously ALL the people have access to pc's etc - It is not hard to use paypal, credit card or bank transfer to make an instant sale - there is NO excuse for not seeing through a record deal - after all NOBODY twisted their arm to commit to buy.

When I use Ebay to "Buy It Now" the total transaction takes less than a minute - everybody's happy - that's how easy it is - all other deals should be (where possible) conducted in the same manner.

  11. paul anka is rubbish...............and people danced all night to shit in the main, cause they were out their heads.........lets have a reality check herewicked.gif

Paul Anka sums up for me the weird & wonderful world of the Northern soul scene. I also don't think it is rubbish - lots & lots of worse records played than Paul Anka IMO.

  12. To me, Paul Anka "Can't Help Loving You" sums up Northern Soul perfectly .

Where else in the world would teenage kids dance to a record in the early hours of the morning sung by somebody called Johnny Caswell but it is in fact by a 50s & 60s pop singer called Paul Anka, who incidentally wrote the lyrics to "My Way", & then call it Northern Soul !!!!!! ?

    Says it all to me.

    Bloody good record BTW.
