Fantastic slab of Motown/Northern Soul - would be great to dance to, I imagine, but it never gets played out anywhere does it ?
If ever there was a case for CD decks at a venue, then this is surely it !!!
-
Benji, that may be the case my friend - but when bored with the vocal, move on...as far away from the instrumental as possible...
If anybody ever tires of the vocal of "Alone With No Love" - they must be tired of soul music....................& possibly life itself !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
few years back on ebay john and wierdest boot was always fetching £50 at the very least
Each to their own but I had "No Time" for it myself.

RIP Teddy.
Respect for a job well done sir.
You have left us with a wonderful legacy.
"Be Sure" off his self titled 1977 album is a masterpiece.

Yes Andy.......you know that I know the reality......or I would hope you do!............so yes, in some (not all - Ron Carroll for instance) of my posts it is more about wish than reality, but I am in one of my "low" phases musically (don't get me wrong by that statement, I have continually plenty of great new release music here) as I see mash-ups/classics proliferating gigs and playlists and often find it a bit disappointing.
Perhaps it needs stripping back to a group of diehards with a small-ish following to push things along again.....I dunno........I suppose to put it into context with what the majority on here can identify with, a bit like an end of Wigan/start of Stafford scenario............the 60's Newies brigade, but with new releases.
Too many people that were once kings of all they surveyed progression wise, now going through the motions and that in turn having a negative effect on things perhaps? I dunno......I'm just thinking out loud......perhaps I shouldn't care or bother myself with it!!
Cheers,
Mark R
Of course I know what you mean Mark. Please don't get me started on "mash ups" I see them as I saw "tailor mades" on the NS scene thirty years ago - totally pointless ! & harmful to people trying to push "bona-fide" new music. However, somebody must like them as people up & down the country dance to them every weekend.
Me ? - I'll stick with Kenny, Steph, Heather etc. - they provide me with as much soul music as I need in 2010.
There is still a fantastic modern scene chugging along quite nicely IF you know where to look !!!

TBH ladies & gentleman this thread has just degenerated into a posting of modern soul lists & youtube clips. The thread is supposed to be about "modern anthems" - much as I like & have played Maxine Inniss - Dawn Tallman etc. I don't think they are anthems & certainly not in the same league popularity wise, play wise & even that widely known about as records by Jesse James, Corey Blake, Gloria Scott, Bobby Sheen, Percy & Them, Eddie Billups, Bessie Banks etc.etc.
There are lots of fantastic modern soul records out there that I would love to see gaining "anthem" status - wanting it to happen & it actually happening are two different things.
However, I also understand there can be a fine line between"anthem" & "played out."

Girl I Need You - Artistics (2 Good Sides)
Cloudy Day - Doug Gibbs
I Can't Make It Anymore Spyder Turner (2 Good Sides)
Time - Edwin Starr (2 Good Sides)
Soul Improvisations - Van McCoy.
I reckon even Plumby could sell you them for less than 50 quid including P&P.

Well 'Sylvester-You Make Me Feel Mighty Real?' Ritz All Dayers...77ish...Dunno who played it though!
One record, which could never, ever be described as NS, played at The Ritz/Mecca over 32 years ago hardly constitutes an "invasion" of gay disco music.
Not having a go at you Webby but it angers me when people (not you) make sweeping statements about the music that is or isn't played on the NS scene & then they never back them up with any hard facts.

On this thread there is a reference to "gay disco" being played on the Northern Scene. Can someone please give me the titles of some of these records & where, who & when has played them.

I don't know about anyone else but one of the great things about Soul-Source is the fact that the site covers soul/R&B/northern NOT pop/rock and all the other associated mainstream rubbish. It's our own little oasis, so to speak. Yet, recently we have been subjected to threads covering artists and their so called 'connections' to black music that, in my view, have no relevance to our scene. First it was Hendrix now Elton 'F***ing' John. I, for one, have absolutely NO interest in these people and don't think they have any place on Soul-Source. I'm sure others have their own opinions ...let's hear them.

Nobody has mentioned a disco year yet
The people who would mention the seventies (wash your mouth out) are all out at work. The ones who have mentioned the early sixties have just had a visit from their grandchildren (Xmas holidays) & they have helped them post on this thread.
PS - This very tongue in cheek - I wish all soulies a very Merry Xmas.
BTW 1974 !!!!!

the joneses -the joneses lp [epic]
the joneses- power & water lp [fantasy]
Can anyone help me with the above wants ??
would like these if not pricey
dave
Don't think The Joneses recorded for Fantasy.
Think the album you are after is Water & Power by Water & Power on Fantasy - brilliant album with the superb Mr Weatherman on it.
The Joneses album on Epic is available below - it's the one with Who Loves You & Lies on it.

This has been featured at one or two venues this year - it's a rework of a tune from Gil Scott Heron's "Winter In America" album.
Incidentally Mario Biondi has covered Winter In America on his new CD.
-
Salsoul - wonderful label with some of the best tunes ever made on it.
Like all the selections mentioned apart from perhaps Spring Rain & Night To Remember - mainly because they were hammered to death in the seventies.
Love Double Exposure - Ten Percent is a wonderful piece of music - a true anthem - absolutely top notch.
Like their versions of Baby I Need Your Loving & Newsy Neighbours - worth checking out methinks.
-
All the sevens are a bit "muddy" in the mix.
Should try to get the album. Quite hard on Brown Door original but it did get a re-issue on Kon-Kord. The album mix is longer & the sound quality is far superior to the single
-
Sounds very "Grazin' In The Grass" (Willie Bobo version) in parts - which is no bad thing. Always loved the funk driven Northern sound anyway - like it.
-
Ace !! same Embers ?
The Embers, I Am Aware Of Love, EEE -
And The Embers - Watch Out Girl - MGM -
The album The Embers brought out about 18 months ago is worth checking out if you haven't heard it.

Like the title track & also their version of Ronnie Limar's "You Mean The World To Me Sweetheart"
-
RIP Chris Bartley - Love his Vando album - bought in a newsagents/record shop as a cutout for 99p back in the day - stunning work from Mr B & Van McCoy.
BTW - How good is "You Get Next To My Heart" ??????????????? Wonderful !!!!!!!!!!!!
-
Terrible Tom - now that truly is a stormer!!!!
Sam & Kitty
International GTO's
Twans
Detroit Sound
Joe Hicks
Johnny Sayles

In 1972 a tune I heard at a local youth club was Bobby Hebb - "Love Love Love.
I bought a copy from Starpic in Blackpool & played that record all Summer long in the school holidays. It became a favourite of my late mums - like to play it every now & again just to remember her singing along to it - wonderful tune & memory of a very special person in my life.

Brilliant site about this true genius - go on the discography - it has some great soundbytes on there.
BTW "Soul Improvisations" (full album version) - How good is that !!!

Yes Webby. . Debbie shouted "what the f*** is that"
You like the modern scene thats fair enough. The scene today is split it seems. those of us who prefer the old school uptempo stuff and those who enjoy the modern electro pop/dance. we'll stick to what we like
Debbie - I have always loved music from the 1920s-1970s, i just cant stand the sound of the new music, i have never even listened to a radio, thats just the way i am!
Modern electro pop/dance ???????????????
Been listening to Soul music for over 35 years can't recall ever listening to anything like that - must be the wrong "high street" clubs I've been to.
-
Here we go again with same old defensive arguement.. "night club / disco music"......
No offence but if you can't distinguish the music between your local night club / disco and souful house and funk played by the more discerning DJs on this scene....then you really are missing out on some great music.
Far too easy to negatively generalise for the sake of safety....
Took the words right out of my mouth - I would love to attend all these "high street" nightclubs that play modern quality soulful dance music - a few people on here must have their addresses because they are in every town up & down the country.
