  1. https://www.juno.co.uk/ppps/products/366258-01.htm Different take - CD2 - Track 13.
  2. I love Johnny Howard "The Chase Is On" even though it contains the lyric "& I'm trying to find you girl, like Edison did to light"
  3. It was also one of the last Northern tunes played at The Highland Room by Colin Curtis
  4. Quote Barry "I remember being a kid and thinking 'Sweeter Than The Day Before' was titled 'Sea-lions Ten Feet Tall.' " I did actually see ten foot tall sea-lions one morning on the way home from Wigan - but that's another story !!
  5. Chapter 5 - "You Can't Mean It" The lines which includes references to looking before leaping & counting blessings instead of sheep !!!!!!
  6. Love that episode - it's the one where Uncle Albert is worried about Ken who went to a nightclub in Wigan & hadn't been seen for two days. His holdall was missing but his pyjamas were still at home. However, Albert was pleased that Ken had the sense to take a couple of vests with him.
  7. Morris Jefferson is simply AWESOME - one of my top ten records ever. If this record was "seriously" rare it would be top of everyones wants list. BTW - Other side ain't bad either.
  8. Not want to be pedantic but it was Ian who played it first. I used to be at The Highland Room with Pete Haigh, Steve Naylor etc. every week when it opened at 7.30. Can remember Ian putting it on & Colin saying within about 2 bars - "I'll have that one" Was there also the first time Ian played Brainstorm - "Loving Is Really My Game" (again early doors when the place was practically empty) . He kept playing the intro over & over again - telling everyone that they had "borrowed" it from "Your Magic Put A Spell On Me"
  9. Velvet Satins - Nothing Can Compare To You Gems - I'll Be There
  10. Can't believe people pay money for this record - couldn't move in the 70s for stuff like this - not played my copy in 30 years.

  12. I look at it this way - Van Gogh never sold a painting when he was alive - perhaps if KRL or Ian Dewhirst's "MasterPaints" had been around marketing him then he may have done a bit better. Think most peoples introduction to Soul in the late 60s/early 70s was via Motown . Berry Gordy surrounded himself with talent & new how to market a product. On the talent side lots of other labels had it in abundance, but not the marketing to go with it - perhaps if every 60s soul record ever made had been a massive hit there may never have been a Northern Soul scene. Ponder this - if "Stop In The Name Of Love" had been dismissed by Motown quality control & "Do I Love You" had been a worldwide hit - which record would have been played on the Northern scene ? Which wins - Rarity or Quality ?
  13. Horses for courses in my opinion. If you are an OVO person & that float's your boat - fine. If you attend a gig that is advertised as an oldies venue & they play "If You Ask Me" - Jerry Williams off a CD & you enjoy it I also have no problem with that. I think old Swamp Dogg would be pleased that people are still enjoying his music some 40 years after it was recorded. A good blend of old, new, underplayed music & DJ sets with a bit of imagination are more the things I look for on a night out.
  14. [quote name='Benji' Basically, you're wrong. Unless the record features really heavy scratches or jumps, then you're right. I'm quite often wrong about being right but seldom right about being wrong ..................glad we've cleared that up then.
  15. If a record is "goosed" playing it loudly in a club only amplifies that fact ! If it doesn't sound good at home it ain't going to sound any better over a large sound system - just play it off CD & be done with it .

  17. Hope you gave the lad change after you'd bought your coffee !!! or can you live with the guilt of charging a full 50p. Sorry but in IMVHO it has always been a very bad record.
  18. Bobby Hebb George Blackwell Gil Scott Heron Pierre Hunt Dillinger Funkadelic Roy Ayers Stanley Clarke & yes Celi Bee Different times - Different music !!! The Highland Room was a journey - which stop you got off at was up to you !!
  19. Agreed - but when a Promoter/DJ at the venue releases the record on a label called "Casino Classics" that doesn't really do Wigan any favours does it ?
  20. TBH Dave, Russ would never win a poularity contest on the Northern scene but to be fair it was him who instigated the all nighters in 1973 & he wasn't the only DJ to play "suspect" soul records. A lot of DJs & promoters & CD compilers have made a "good living" out of Wigan Casino - not least all those who still "celebrate" what would have been Wigan Casino's (insert number between 9 & infinity!!) Anniversary
  21. Not wanting to play "devil's advocate" here but both Martha & Gladys both achieved fame & success on a global scale whereas my choice (Lorraine Chandler) only has her popularity exclusively on the Northern Soul scene. What Can I Do I Can't Hold On Tell Me Your Mine I Can't Change You Only Live Twice She Don't Want You Mend The Torn Pieces Of My Heart are all "exclusive" hits for the Northern scene & that is not forgetting her work with The O'Jays, Freddie Butler, The Hesitations, The Metro's, Sharon Scott & of course co-writing Eddie Parker's monster tunes "Love You Baby" & "I'm Gone" The lady truly sits proud on the "Northern Soul throne" IMHO.
  22. Sidra's Theme - 'cos the vocal is total cack !!
  23. ....................with a little help from Mike Terry. So King Mike & Queen Lorraine it is !!
  24. Lorraine Chandler for me - quality & quantity !!!!
  25.
