Nice one Pete - just proves that there is still good/interesting stuff to discover.
Will play it in the car on the way to work.
-
Also done by Barbara McNair & a nice version by Richard "Dimples" Fields.
Kiki Dee is the best version for me though.
-
Kelly Garrett - "Love's The Only Answer" - a ballad it is NOT !!!!
-
Would have to go with Lorraine Chandler "What Can I Do" - The vocals of Ms Chandler & that wonderful Mike Terry sax gurgling away in the background is perfection to me.
Honourable mention to the "unreleased" sides by Sharon Scott that Kent put out on their RCA CDs - Superb. Think both Mecca & Wigan would have loved to have had them back in '74
-
Thelma Houston DLMTW was the first record to be played in 1977 in The Highland Room - it was played just after midnight by Ian Levine.

AGREE WITH NEW YORK CITY TOO THE FIRST TIME I'D COME ACROSS LUTHER VANDROSS' VOICE
Are you not thinking of New York City Band that Luther recorded with - "Got To Have Your Body" gets the odd play now & again - it is from a film soundtrack.

"Ghost !!!! - Spirit !!!!!!! - never mind.
As far as the night goes DJs will be featuring all the genres played at The Mecca - including, Northern, Jazz Funk, Disco, Crossover etc. - a "genuine" last hour set by the DJ who actually did that last hour. Abley assisted by three DJs who lived through those glory days of The Highland Room.
The music will be top - guaranteed - 6 hours of the best music ever played at The Mecca. No repeat records all night - that's a promise. We are working through a playlist with Colin to give you a wonderful selection of tunes.

Er...What?? Let's turn this around a bit.....Blackpool Mecca played Contemporary Soulful Dance Music and Wigan Casino played lots of Pop Music FFS
Webby - look up the word irony in the dictionary !!!!!!
-
It was mentioned in Blues & Soul and possibly Black Echoes at the time,
I remember reading it,
The term Disco a shortened form of Discotheque was used a the time to describe a place used for dancing to recordings of music,Played by Dj's and not performed by live artistes
The term now relates I believe to be anything played at Wigan Casino,But only by people who never went to "The Best Disco In The World "
Grant
No - Blackpool Mecca played Disco & Wigan Casino played "proper" rare soul .

All the Billboard magazines are online here https://books.google.com/books?id=MigEAAAAMBAJ&lpg=PA1&pg=PA1#v=onepage&q&f=false
No mention of WC being the number 1 club in the world.
Footsee gets a mention though !!
-
Ashford & Simpson Song - nice version by Diana Ross too.

Best will in the world there is a max of 52 Fridays & Saturdays a year ie 104 dates that realistically people will attend. Take out 8/10 Weekenders & you are now down to just over 80 dates. Not a lot is it ? & I haven't even put All Nighters in the mix.

Maybe now its 1500 quid tho it'll make some ears prick up?.Great nighter sound Phil. When i first heard it a few months back, the first thing i said was "Its a Burnley sound" (Batcave).
No,its not everyone's cup of tea,but it begs to be heard at a nighter when the rooms buzzing. Not in some xover back room among the late 70's lp tracks.
If you play it loud enough at an All-Nighter does that mean it doesn't have to be that good? Stack 'em up against George Blackwell, Eula Cooper , Del Larks etc etc. They were played at All -Nighters - one thing common to tunes like that - they passed "quality control"
Stick me in a back room playing xover anytime - I might get to hear some soul !!!
-
To be fair this is Soul Source and not northern soul source.I don't consider them to be northern soul either and I don't think he was claiming they were northern soul...I think when he says "scene" he means mod/rare soul scene.Zu Zu is okay aint bad..........Four Tempos-Got To Have You is northern and underplayed (thinking mans oldie?).
Sorry - didn't realise there were so many categories these days - Mod - rare soul - Northern - modern - crossover - oldies etc. etc.
Don't really matter which group you put them in - it makes no difference to me - they are still both rubbish IMHO.
-
Two tunes that have had mass attention in the last year or so are pow wow [ been known and played for a long time on the mod scene ]POW WOW MANNY CORCHADO, LONG VERSION -
zu zu man and the same goes for this, think Des Parkers find, played for a few years on the mod scene before getting spins in the northern rooms
ZU ZU BLUES BAND - ZU ZU MAN -
Sorry - nothing to do with Norhern Soul to me - if this is the fayre on offer at present no wonder oldies are as popular as ever.
TBH a part of me thought these records were put on here as a "wind-up" they really ARE that bad!!!
-
Only just got round to listening to this - really enjoyef it - good work Pete.
Good to see that The Gaturs hasn't been forgotten - brilliant tune !!!
-
I think Andy Lett would agree with me here"
Maurice Williams - being without you
Why:
The drum intro picked up by the bass and then the brass comes screaming in - The soft laid back vocal sounds as though hes in tears and is pleading for her to come back.
"It gets so hard - Being without you" you could apply this to anything you loved!
It could remind you of the Northern soul night you went to and you sing this to yourself looking forward to the next night - so i think this should be the National anthem!
When God gets his box open - he ALWAYS plays Maurice Williams - the best Soul record ever - FACT !!!!!!!!!!
