You would have stocked this album - Barry as the Kon Kord offering is a much later retake of the earlier seven's................hence the crisper sound.
The Kon Kord issue is just a straight copy of the Brown Door album which is a very hard to find item these days.
-
The album cut ever get played out?
I've played it out a few times simply because it sounds so much "crisper".
-
Album version is far superior
Agreed - it's a totally different cut as well.
-
The are only two things you need to know about the Deesu label :-
1) Maurice Williams "Being Without You" is on it.
2) It is the finest record ever put on to vinyl.
-
Her version of "i'll Try Something New" takes some beating !!
-
I remember Levine playing an alternate version of Cajun Hart`s "Got to find a way" about 10 years ago at a weekender and also on Searling`s Sunday show. He announced that it was a far superior version, no idea who it was but it was utter shite and an insult to the original.
TBH Cajun Hart ain't much better !!!!! but not as bad as Bill Bush - "I'm Waiting"
I'm waiting for somebody to tell me why it was ever played - it's pants !!!!
-
Funk has always been played on the Northern Scene - it just depends on your definition of "funk"
To me records like "Baby Boy" - Fred Hughes, "There Was A Time" - Gene Chandler, "I'm Gone" - Eddie Parker, "I Can't Get Enough" - Johnny Sayles, "The Champion" - Willie Mitchell all have a "funky" edge.

Had the opposite happen to me at Imber one night.Someone opened a door, and it was room after room after room.
After room.
Not such a bad idea closing off a side room.Gives a chance to fill the main room for the last hour.
My point being if you attend the event to be in the modern room or R&B room - whichever is your bag. The promoter then shuts them rooms - you have to then go into the main "Northern Room". You have still paid the same admission price as everyone else but the music you attended the event for in the first place is no longer being played. Your choice is to either leave or listen to music you don't really want to - not really much of a choice is it ?
Think the all nighters that Chris Waterman promotes allow you to leave early & you pay a reduced admission price for this - he is to be applauded for that.
-
What about the 2/3 room "all nighters" that choose to shut some of the rooms halfway through the event but fail to advertise this on their flyers or promotions.
I find that "sharp practise" TBH.

Word of the Day.
Nice one Kev........ it's all in good fun mate.
-
The people ( knowing what they are going to get)
The music ( see above)
Start time 9.00pm
Finish time 4.00pm
7 hours of quality.
Gives a chance for folks with other commitments to get out till "late",without getting home at 10 in the morning. (some leave proper nighters at this time anyway,so whats the problem).
Most soul nights end from 12 - 2.am.
Think that is called a Maxi Nighter/Dayer !!!!!

If it's the 7 inch you are after - try here.

& if you want the 12 inch - try here - they are "giving" them away !!!!

Maybe time Northern venues moved with the times a little and got cd players, it is the original format after all. Same for loads of unissued stuff that has appeared on cd over the years, why go to the expense of getting a carver done?
Getting a feeling of Deja Vu here !!!!!!!!

One for sale here - bargain !!!!
-
It's on the album "Sharp"
-
For me there are loads - Great label but my fav is
Hokis Pokis - Swing
Sheer memories of the Mecca!
Didn't know it had ever been released on RCA - my copy is on Shield.
-
Nope. I've located it now. It's Ralphie D "Beautiful Thing" on 20th Century. If anyone can stick a clip up that'd be great!
Ian D
Old Wigan spin - the other side is a version of The Beach Boys "You're So Good To Me" - not heard it since about 1975.
-
Gil Scott Heron can only count to four in French......
Call me "Mr Pedantic" but always thought Uno Dos Tres Quatro was Spanish !!!!
-
I am shocked. It's the best Northern record ever made. In my opinion.
Agreed Pete, not quite the best (Maurice Williams is - FACT !!) but deffo in my Top 10 tunes - great memories of Mecca,Ritz & Wigan for this.
-
Bit of an "Emperor's New Clothes" album to me. Great from a nostalgia point of view - if you were there.
The backing musicians are truly dreadful though !!!
-
Yep. I knew I remembered it. It was deffo in Levine's box circa '75. I recognised the title 'cos there were loads of these "Whole Thing" type records knocking around and no one really knew what the term actually meant over here. I think it was a U.S. TV ad for some monster burger or something wasn't it?
.
Ian D
You must have been looking in Colin's box Ian - it was a "last hour" spin for him - don't recollect ever hearing IL play it. Big fave for the Preston, Chorley & Fylde Coast folks.
