  1. 2nd that Jo, nice one indeed! With the outstanding catalogue of brilliant recordings under Dee Dee's belt, I for one would dearly love to see and hear her performing over here in the UK. She'd blow away any Soul nite! IMO. Steve
  2. Little Helen "Can't Get Enough" on Soul Town steve
  3. I can vouch for that.... Top bloke John Steve
  4. "Off The Record Motown By Master Number 1959-1989" Reginald J Bartlette, I find this essential reading for insomnia! Only 500 and odd pages... but boy are they big! (it's a Tome!!!) Steve
  5. Ya probs know shute, its.. "Look Over Your Shoulder" It's the flip ov "Hand It Over" but make sure ya get the first issue Wand 149, coz it aint on the 2nd issue ov HIO on Wand 169! .... fantastic Beat Ballad IMO makes it a fine double sider for a tenner! Steve
  6. Stunning tune, and by far the best version IMO, I just love the throaty piano, and Dee Dee has one of the finest voices around IMo so much better then her sis Dionne, Fav Northern of Dee Dee's is "Do It With All Your Heart" fav soulful one is "You Dont Know" even love her original version of "Youre No Good" over Betty Everette's Think this would go down great on today's scene. Steve
  7. Maybe things have changed these days, with the ease at which you can gain access to the music by the internet and the multitude of cd's, but to me it was the DJ/Collector who introduced us to something new. There is of course those who put themselves above the music, but I feel they are few. As a collector I'm all for "Innovators" and "Teachers" but I never look up at pedestals! and the only "homage" I believe in is to the music. So "Player, Play On" as Mr Rickett said! Steve
  8. Remember that revue! I hadn't heard "Somebody Elses Sweetheart" before, but after ya revue I tracked a copy down, (with a revue like that I bloody had too!) an I wasn't disapointed! Steve
  9. Truely memorable night Chalky, I can still see the look in his eye, as the crowd warmed to "The Drifter" I'm sure he stopped a moment and the whole room carried on! He was gifted with one of the finest voices around IMO I loved his earlyer stuff with the Wanderers, A big fav of mine is the stunning ballad, "After He Breaks Your Heart" stuck it on here as my tribute to the great man. not Northern, just dam good IMO steve
  10. I agree here, to me a dj should only play original. The music IS the most important thing, and a dj is just a servent to the music and the punters, but with the advent of CD's, anyone can do a blinding set of current "biggies" and "standards". Punters go to soul nights expecting DJ's to entertain, but also to educate! If the current crop of DJ's didnt go in search of the original "grails" then this scene would stagnate. Anything new would be reserved for private "bothy" nights for collectors circles. Well just my thought anyway Steve
  11. "If I Cant Fly" Fantastic tune that Vinnie! gets loadsa plays round here, Another ace track is "The Day I Found Myself" do ya kno that un? cant stop playin both of em at the mo! Steve

  14. Marvin Jnr (Dells) Big Maybelle How I'd love to have heard em duet on "Stay In My corner" Steve
  15. Brill version Davie! "Big Mama and her Hound Dogs wading in the water" This vers. includes some brilliant Blues guitar work by Bee Houston IMO. As indeed does the flip side "Ball and Chain" Big Mama recorded the orig. version of "Hound Dog" and took it to No. 1 R&B, she made 500 bucks, Elvis made a little more methinx! Talkin bout "Wade In The Water", does anyone know who originally composed it? Ramsey's vers. credits him as writer, Marlena Shaw's credits Shaw & Magid, and Big Mama's credits only herself as arranger! Steve
  16. I remember asking for "Um Um Um Um Um Um" in a record store many many years ago... ya cant ask for it without singing it! Steve

Larry Wright on their Twirl cut "Maintain Your Cool" an Gerald Mathis on the Impact outing "That Same Old feeling" but he came back after their Inferno stuff in 68, Mind playin em side by side, the lead does sound different! Wasn't "Aint Gonna Give You Up" cut early 71? anyone know? Volumes were one ov them groups that IMO never cut a bad record! Steve
