agree bout Taurus and Leo, I'm sure I've seen this listed as being from '67. As a matter of interest was there any other releases on Velvet Sound? Taurus and Leo has a label number of 45-367. or was that just a number given by Atco, the label's distributor? steve

Another label thats so Detroit but maybe classed as Chicago is Boo. Label owner Ric Williams is Chicago, but he set up the label for Bridges Knight & Eaton who I'm sure based themselves in Detroit, and I know a lot of the label output was recorded at Tera Shirma, Where would we class Boo and indeed Aquarius for that matter (another Ric Williams label) What do think? I'm well impressed with the list so far. next is a discog of them all please! steve

Big Wheel, although the label owner Frank Kosian was from NY, everything on the label was recorded in Detroit (Golden World & Untied Sound), certainly everything by the Falcons. The Falcons also did the backing on Sandy Hollis, thats why left that in there. Fair enough. I agree about the Falcons, Sandy Hollis, and even the Bettye LaVette disc (which actually is Jobete both sides) just thort we was listing labels that were actually based in Detroit. Rich, I can remove but again according to R&B indies 1801 was subsidary of Motown as well as distributed by Motown. 1801 (Cornell Blakely) was indeed a Motown master but I think John Richborough (label owner) used a lot of different record companies to distribute the labels output, I know the JJ Barnes (with an early Vandellas backing) was distributed by Ace records. MUsic Town again Detroit according to R&B Indies, can anyone confirm otherwise? I had an article somewhere about Detroit Soul from some for forum or other that I'm looking for. R&B Indies is often wrong so again looking for confirmation one way or t'other. Tru-Ba-Dor added.

Tru-Ba-Dor still to be added to list Chalky also wondered bout Rich being on there, if this is the JJ Barnes, Cornell Blakely label, then it was based in Nashville. so three I would question about being Detroit based would be "Big Wheel" "Music Town" and "Rich" tho am probs wrong Getting to be an impresive list of labels, so many important labels from, I'd say the most important city concerning Northern Soul steve

Chalky, as I mentioned previously.. you can deffo put W.I.G. on the list (part of Sidra) also Bantu and International Hits are another 2 that I don't think I can see on the list. Re Music Town... always thort that was Philly? (Frankford Wayne stamp and all that) or is there another "Music Town" other than the one the connecticut group "Detroit Soul" was on? steve

Some list there! but I'd have said Big Wheel was New York (even tho all but one release are Detroit productions) mising ones I can think of are Drum, Correctone, Ernstrat, Tru-Ba_Dor, W.I.G., Wee3, J&W, Volkano, Theoda, Temple, Ron's (Sorry if they since been mentioned!) steve

there is stuff like Lee Andrews "Cold grey dawn" and "Cant Get along without You" that only came out on Lost Nite. But Butlers first came out on Red then Blue text Phila lable as far as i know? steve

Didnt know there's a vocal to "Im Satisfied? there is of course the vocal to "Hungry For Love" (Tony Michaels "I Love The Life I Live") and "Festival Time" (Laura lee "To Win Your Heart") steve

Ya know some people carry on the music, take it somewhere different (away from us). and there are some around who try to just imitate what the true greats of this scene did with ease... and try to pass it off as some kinda "new" Northern soul!! But the likes of "Mike" Terry and his contempories..... well they could never be bettered in my very very humble opinion. some folk should stop trying to re-invent this scene, and just accept what was, will always be! Thort a few of Mike Terry's tunes he was involved in either as performer, writer, arranger..... mite be a good media thread.... what do ya think? steve

Andrew "Mike" Terry. "I'll Never Forget You" (O'jays)..... They didnt come much better then this. From Texas to Detroit. Yet another soul legend has left us. But like so many before, he left us all the more enriched for hearing his musical presence. Privaliged we are. The "Bari" lives on. God bless him steve

One of my all time favorite tunes, and for me it has to be Betty! the '65 cut on Calla tho! not that remake she did at Karen in '69 for Ollie McLaughlin. Worth a mention also is the arrangement by Detroit's Dale Warren..... just perfect! (was it recorded in Detroit? Terra Sherma?) Thanx Tony for clearing up who Wreich Holloway (great name!) was, did she pen anything else under that pseudonym? steve

Ya know what Roger? I'm with you mate, of any possible act for a weekender, for me it would have to be Little Anthony. We've said it for years round here, doubt the people who put on these weekenders would agree though! as for expense! why get two three four acts that maybe have a half dozen tunes between them that they probs can't even remember recording, when you could have Little Anthony with enough material to do a propper set. of stuff that he, actually recorded. And he still has the voice! steve

What's the label number on TM? Originally released in 1972 on MoWest 3002 (which bombed) then re-issued in 1975 on same MoWest cat. No. due to popular plays as far as I know. steve
