  1. Just bought a copy of 'Do I Make Myself Clear' by Etta James and Sugar Pie Desanto on blue label US Cadet (5519). Looking on Manship's it was was released Chess (8025) and Argo (black) (5519) why was it released on all three labels? This is also the case for many other 60's track's from the Chess group. I always thought that Cadet was their 'progressive' label, Argo was more jazz orientated, and Chess was for mainstream Soul and Blues releases?
  2. 'Keep My Woman Home ' was a Memphis recorded track, at Stax with full backing of Booker T and the memphis horns. Don't know if there's any connection.
  3. If you look at Lulu's 60's Decca output alot of the material are Soul/R&B covers both well known and not so. Her versions are her interpretations of the demos she heard, and with british studios and musicians the resulting products always going to be different. Personally for the best soul track try the EP only beat ballad 'Nothing Left To Do But Cry', written by future Bread frontman David Gates, presiding at that time in the Brill Building, and as good as the US original by Merry Clayton.
  4. The Rat Race (1960) is a really great film starring Tony Curtis and Burt Lancaster and has a great soundtrack by Elmer Bernstein, who's version of the Title Theme is very jazzy, but not northern. Another track for the thread: 'Feelin' Good' - Jean Dushon (Chess) fr. the Show 'Roar Of The Greasepaint....', written by none other than Anthony Newley.
  5. Unless bit of trival, but Simon and Garfunkel's 'The Boxer' was written about Billy Walker.
  6. Why do all the UK copies of this 45 always have no centre?
  7. It never ceases to amaze me on Ebay some of the 45's that are labelled 'northern'. There seems to be many UK and US MOR artists that have tracks that could be played out. Most however on listening always seem to fall short of 'proper' soul. Just wondered if anyone's heard either of the above tracks that are apparently northern according to a recent ebay listing?
  8. 'Wouldn't It Be Something' flip of 'There's Always Something There To Remind Me' is a top under rated tune.
  9. Was in California in October 07' and went to both Rookie's and Bagatelle. Rookie's is a great shop and has some good mod tunes (they haven't sussed this stuff yet unless it's crossed over to the nothern scene), but not much northern as most of it goes to auction, I found this out from speaking the owner, also they have all Manships guides. There are some interesting 45's on the front counter and also on the floor at the backside. I visited twice in two days, on the first visit I spent about 3 hours rooting around and the assistant did me a really good deal on a bulk number of items. On my second visit the owner was there and he was less generous. The stuff here is fairly well laid out, although there are loads of mixed boxes on the floor. At my one visit to Bagatelle I spent about 2 hours going through boxes of 45's which are arkward to get at as the are positioned high up. The are a couple of interesting boxes next to the counter. Again they use Manships book, but charge about 1/2 the book values for the cheaper stuff. Forgotten to mention both have record players with headphones, so you listen to whatever tracks you want. Happy shopping.
  10. Manship has a copy of A Whole Lot Of Woman / I Don't Want To Cry for £15 if that's any help.
  11. There's a mighty long road when you're trying to make it all alone when you've got no wife in your corner to stand by your side Corny lyric of the week: I've got a PHD in Loveology!
  12. Whether you like the guy or not, CC has loads of Northern Soul during his 3 hour weekly BBC 6 show. He is promoting our music on mainstream radio which can't be a bad thing. He always takes with passion about whatever tracks or acts he is interviewing. I think he should at least be given a chance before he's condemned by SS forumees! Perhaps he ought to bring his Corrie pal Vernon for extra support!

  14. I Believe - Fenton Robinson (Palos) Off The Wall - James Cotton (Verve)
  15. Totally agree with Rowly (apart from the years great soul music was made!!!). The other point is that you can go and see these UK performers live now and possibly right on your doorstep in some cases. As much as I'd like to see soul singers of the 60's/70's at there height, it's not a realistic thing, although Maxine Brown at the Forum came close. Joss Stone, Amy Winehouse and Duffy are the best and closest thing we have to those performers/artists of the past that we love, and although I prefer Sharon Jones and Nicole Willis they don't come to the UK regularly enough so those are the choices especially if you like live music (which I do).
  16. That's normally because the email address is wrong, normally it's something like a mis-type or similar.
  17. Peggy Woods - Love Is Gonna Get Me, although I'm sure Ady covered this up as Mary Love before it came out on one of the anniversary 45's.
  18. Great film. Best track is undoubtedly 'Nothing But Love' uptempo dancer https://www.soulclub.org/stream/The_Five_He...or_You_Baby.ram
  19. Maurice White (of Earth Wind & Fire) was the drummer in the Chess studio band, he was also in the Ramsey Lewis Trio after Young and Holt left. Pretty sure it would be him playing drums on Landslide.
  20. Sorry if this has already been mentioned somewhere else on the forum. Pretty pointless cover version of Etta James
  21. Great track, after this one myself. Goes for about £20 - 30 on ebay usually.
  22. Hi Pete Thanks for the info. Tim
