  1. JJ is an interesting topic on ihis own, he's one of the greatest bass players of alltime. However it's amazing how many basslines he didn't play on, Youtube is awash with this stuff. Worst is the Jackson Five, most of their early stuff was recorded in LA, JJ didn't move there till about 1973. I'm not a musician but if you listen to any number of Motown 60's classics, his style of playing is v.distinctive and it's easy to workout if it's him or not. Let's now even get into the 'Carol Kaye played on I Was Made To Love Her' story!! What a nut job!
  2. sorry here's September.
  3. Going through some old boxes and found these 2 columns from Aug & Sept 1970, makes interesting reading. Got some Action, B&C and Stax ads which I'll post up later.
  4. also on UK Sue
  5. Most big R&B tunes on the Northern Scene, like Charles Sheffield etc were massive on the Mod/R&B scene first and have then crossed over. Being that in generally terms, R&B is between RNR and Soul in the development of popular music, although I know R&B has been around since the 1940's, I'm talking in terms of the tunes we dance to, some older and current R&B tunes on the Mod/R&B scene are closer to what's being played at Rockin' clubs. I don't go to loads of Northern do's, but I can't think of any R&B big tunes that broke on the Northern Scene first!
  6. Hi Sam Soulgirl had one in early Feb for £45 don't know if she sold it or not? TTM
  7. Great Loma w/site here: https://www.lomarecords.com/
  8. Hope this hasn't been put up before but's it really interesting: https://www.cbc.ca/radio2/programs/insidethemusic/itm_listenagain/2010/03/01/i_got_mine_the_story_of_jackie_1.html Lasts about an hour.
  9. Interesting how many UK sheets use a combination of the original and cover artist. There are some pretty unusual ones out there, I have Frankie and Johnnie, Ray Pollard and Chuck Jackson (Changes of Love) all really interesting with pictures.
  10. Sorry this is in B&W, thought it would be of interest.
  11. This remained unissued until the first Cellarful Of Motown CD, it's also been recorded and issued by Brenda Holloway. Tammi's is from 1966. Although Stevie Wonder co-wrote this with Clarence Paul and Morris Broadnax, he didn't record it until the early 80's. Here's the MP3 file: ALL I DO - TAMMI TERRELL -
  12. This is very heart warming, especially as he didn't get any royalties for that Belgian 'Marginal' CD Bootleg compilation!
  13. Looking for the UK pressing of the above.
  14. UK release only. Thanks Apologies for my spelling. Should be 'Grits Ain't Groceries'!
  15. Can't look at the ebay link as I'm on my work PC. But there are a lot of 45's including this one as boots on UK ebay at the moment, £7.74 is what they sell for.
  16. Hi Sam There was one on ebay a couple of days ago went for about £75.
  17. Callum, Mace and Clanger are all right in their differents ways. There's definately a difference as to what R&B is played at difference venues all over the country, almost a north -south divide! Most mod nights in and around London tend to play a number of genres, including R&B, Club Soul, Ska, Funk, Latin, Hammond etc, although there has been a move towards more fifties style R&B and Popcorn at some nights, it really depends which DJ's are spinning. There's also a big difference in what is the perception of 'R&B' in northern and mod circles. I often see records advertised as the next 'big' R&B sound on a list (some on this site) and it's not a style or sound that's currently popular, it's just the seller trying to move some unwanted stock. It tends to be only the big mod scene tunes that crossover to the northern scene, most tunes played in some venues would never be played out in northern clubs, especially some of the latin, hammond and funk style tunes.
  18. The appeal of a carver is that you can play great and unheard, unreleased CD only tracks at vinyl only venues that don't have cd players. There's a big difference between a carver and a boot, because for the majority of people carvers are 'one offs' made for DJ's. For my carvers I've already paid for the CD, and know that the royalties are going to the correct interested parties.
  19. Some good stuff on there, give it a few listens.
  20. Mica Paris is definately up there for UK vocalists, checkout this version of the Staple Singers classic from back in the early nineties:

  22. Anyone got a copy of Big Lucky Carter - Ohio Bound on Goldwax? Thanks
  23. 'I Need Someone' on Kent Select best release this year so far, this is such a quality track and deserves to be played out and become massive. Here's the info from the Ace site: The CD sensation of 2008 yields two 60s soul dance masterpieces that were crying out for a vinyl press. 'Home At Last' is the most infectious super-tempo rhythm'n'soul played out for the last couple of decades, while the classic Northern soul flip has HB Barnum's arrangements written all over it. Interesting the H B Barnum references, I was listening to David McCallum's HB produced 45 'Communication' and the instrumentation could be from the same session. Tony, Ady thanks for this release.
  24. Ah found it! CHESS SV001 THE VALENTINOS - SWEETER THAN THE DAY BEFORE THE DELLS - THINKIN ABOUT YOU £8.99 Unfortunately not the Valentinos track I what so I'll have to play it from the '84 reissue lp until I can afford it!
