  4. Hi! Ron Banks (on Inky...): "Here in the States it did much better than Bingo. Now we started getting airplay across the country, which was really hard back in those times. We started selling records here in Michigan, in Chicago, St. Louis, some places down south, a couple of places on the east coast - they even played it a couple of times in the New York City. It went number one here in Detroit, and that meant so much for us, because we had been working so hard to get our record number one in the city we actually live in. It gave us a little popularity and it gave us more incentive to keep going." (Soul Express: The Dramatics Story, part 1). Best regards Heikki
  5. Hi Richard! I'm afraid it's too long. I think it's 12 or 14 pages - or even more, I'm at work now, so I don't have the copy in front of me - and numerous people were interviewed for that article. Best regards Heikki
  6. Hi! Luther Ingram: "I first met Robert (Bateman) in my home town, in Alton. He was with Motown at the time. He later wanted me to come to New York, and he made himself a part of me making a record." Daisy (Luther's sister): "Luther left for New York in 1965, from Illinois. He spent lots of time in New York during his career, which is why many probably think he lived in New York, but he never actually changed his residence to New York, though you could say New York was like his second home." Luther: "Jamo Thomas recorded I Spy after I recorded it, and it was a deal between Jamo and, I think, the Impressions. Jamo was a very nice person and I okayed Jamo for the record." (The complete Luther Ingram Story; Soul Express no. 2/2004). Best regards Heikki

  8. Hi Peter! Everything's fine, except that I'm going on business to Siberia next week. There you can forget about soul music. I only hope they'll let me out of there :-). Best regards Heikki
  9. Hi! Some of Sam's quotes from my earlier interviews with him are used at https://www.soulexpress.net/deep2_2014.htm There's also my Muscle Shoals/Fame report and some photos from 13-plus years back, and the Staple Singers etc. Best regards Heikki
  10. ... but many, many mistakes. James Brown's "Please Please Please" is renamed "No No No", and when discussing Arethan Franklin's session in Muscle Shoals - which resulted in one song only - they don't show the Fame Studios but the old 3614 Jackson Highway Studio. For me the whole series was too restless, concentrating at times more on social and political matters than music, the songs were featured for only a few seconds and their choice of interviewees was peculiar. In general, it's always good when they make documentaries on our music, but I think that in this case we should ask an outsider, whether he learn much about soul music or not? Best regards Heikki
  11. Hi! My first interview with Floyd in 2002, when we discussed his earlier career: https://www.soulexpress.net/floydtaylor.htm Best regards Heikki

Johnny, if any, knows Overton Vertis and his music. “After I had moved to Milwaukee, I became his band director, although he lived in Memphis. I was his musical director from 1975 until the day he passed away (in November 1980, at 41), but when I was a teenager I played with him some weekends in Mississippi. My high school band was the backing band for him. Check out Soul Source Directory a directory full of just some of the top soul sites going ... https://www.soul-source.co.uk/directory
  15. Hi! In my interview Chuck told that around 1956 he joined the Raymond Raspberry Gospel Singers as a background singer but wasn't on any of their records. He then joined the the Dell-Vikings in the line-up of Chuck, Eddie Everett, Arthur Budd, Corinthian "Kripp" Johnson and Don Jackson, but didn't record. Clarence Quick owned the name "Dell-Viking", so as an alternative they were called the Versatiles. After this Chuck talks about the song Willette at length, but ends that "Willette is the first ever record my voice is on." Best regards Heikki

  20. Hi Soulman! Actually it was a comment addressed to Sunnysoul about Ronnie's birthyear. Ronnie told me that the year 1951, which was mentioned in Wikipedia and some other sources, is incorrect and it should be 1949. Best regards Heikki
  21. Hi! When I did the above interview with him, he corrected me and said that it was not in 1951 but in 1949. Please scroll down a bit. Best regards Heikki
  22. Hi Robb! Okay, just let me know when you arrive. The group was quite popular over here, and especially the bass singer, Lee Gaines, who died here in Finland in 1987 and is buried here. Best regards Heikki

  24. Hi Robb, how are you? The Delta Rhythm Boys recorded still in Finland in the 70s. https://youtu.be/0UM3lpJOM6c There are many examples, if on YouTube you write "The Delta Rhythm Boys Suomi" Best regards Heikki
  25. Thank you, Dave, but it wasn't an easy one. I had to re-check and re-re-check many times, but I think I got all the pieces together now. Best regards Heikki
