  1. I went to the Dome regually and never heard the 4 vandals but I was not there every week, suppose only people like Matt J, Dave Flynn etc can really answer that one.

You hear all sorts about Ian Lavine, but what strikes me is how somebody can so regually, knowingly state things in print and on film that he knows are completely untrue, how could you look others in the eye knowing you have repetitively done that? or more importantly you are in fact full of S***!

    He's a very strange man..

  2. That contribution comes from a freelance guy who asks us to submit a few interesting pieces from the auction each month. Not sure about RC being "tuned in" cause if we didn't send it to him, and he didn't send it to them, then no one would be any the wiser.

It'll be interesting to see the blurb we submitted to him, on the Len Barry - It's that Time Of TheYear - UK LP which has never ever been mention in RC (to my knowledge) or listed in RC Price guide. That will surely have a few long-term pop collectors franticly searching through their LPs.

I think they could do more on Northern/soul/ska/reggae/funk, and i think they would, if only they appreciated how huge collector base for each genre was.

Agree John they could do allot more, it's been an age since Pete Smiths northern soul special back in the 9ts... there has of course been related features since but a reappraisal on the northern soul collecting scene would give them a great inside spread.

Mojo are the same, I love the magazine but I feel they are kind of frightened to cover the subject in depth leaving it to bods like us I suppose...

Will look out for Len Barry..:wicked:

  4. It *IS* interesting, but if you sort it by records which actually have bids then the top price list goes like:

    U2

    Beatles

    Iron Maiden

    Celebrities (soul)

    Bob Dylan

    Beatles

    Gene Toones (soul)

    Elvis

    Roland Kirk

    Little Willie Johnson

    Beatles

    LP collection

    Beatles

Which suggests that maybe Record Collector are more tuned in than you might think. Obviously you can't write a 6-page feature on Gene Toones, but a round-up of the soul sales and a WEE bit of history each month would be interesting.

Record collector is very tuned in, Remember they listed that 3rd copy of Combinations - what cha gonna do when it sold last year, found in a yard sale in Tennessee no less..£4774 was the sale price on that one.. that said the blurb and I suppose scan were supplied by guess who? Raresoulman...

  5. Lynn's very well remembered in Australia, I spoke to many people young and old about Australian music and all sorts remembered her as they do Marcia Hines who of course is a panelist on Australian Pop Idols, loads of Aussies have the LP with 'Cant let go' on, the 7inch release as you all know is a little trickier..

  6. Carrie Cleveland "Make love to me"/"I need love" Audio Ent. Two super sides, and rather rare.

This track was discovered by one of the guys who has a shop on Haight Street in San Fransisco as Carrie was from the Bay area, both tracks came out as a 45 and on her only Lp, but both were different versions with a dodgy organ throughout, the 45 you speak about nearly never saw the light as Carrie did not like her vocal on that particular recording, and simply was not going to let her stock of the 45 go because of that fact.......great track though..

  7. There was a great new Discovery here on soul source, Barbara Jean English - Taste sour don't it / Unreleased acetate, 3 acetates came to light and were sold on, but they are not really in the hands of a DJ to make them big, the seller popped a sound file on here:

Now if that isn't a top draw 6ts Northern discovery I'll eat my hat and what else comes to hand, as its a far far superior Dancer to most of the new discoveries that get played..there was also a version By Jimmy Radcliffe which IMO was no where near babs version, but thats just my opinion.

Other tracks worth a mention that although not discovered this year are pretty newish, Act III on Haley Records, Lotusland records had a stock of this 45 which is where a certain DJ / dealer got them from.

  8. Known? Rated? Hated? Dunno myself, can't find it in the books, not bad early 60's a bit like a cross between Stand By Me and Somebody Help Me (Donald Jenkins).

Well there you go Pete, its a one off song not recorded by any of the above... You may have a real rarity here matey, take good care of it!!

    Mal:-)

  9. Hip Teens is a throw away pop record, nothing less nothing more.. just a bit of fun.. its certainly the top of the tree of its type...

I can understand everybody liking it, I especially as some mad man  paid me £70 odd quid for mine off here... cost me £2.50..

  10. Never heard of it Pete, sound very interesting though, maybe you could ask Frank or George, you may never hear back from George of course but who knows what he has tucked away....although Craig Bayliss says he deffo does not have Nolan Porter on Aussie Probe...Laughs ....The mystery lives on!!!

    Mal.C.

  11. Blimey never though I'd see the day, I bought Sebastian's copy(above), and Very happy I am too that I got it, as this is a very rare track which took me a F*** long time to get, believe me a rare quality crossover record...

I know buggar all about Lifeline and all that but if they are spinning stuff like this, I should venture out!!!

I Notice somebody also listed Rhythm Machine on Rodan on here recently and no takers....

  12. Anybody cast any light on this one?

Grace Dumas - Song of a Woman / J Jems Is this the same label as Mel Alexanders label, that mirrored his Kris releases? always wondered cause grace disc bears no info on where it might come from, ie no prompt Publishing credit, nothing mentioning Mel, which is unusual for his dics etc??

  13. The blue label copy, i.e the piano version, only came out with Funky Funky Twist on the other side, surely. There are two green issues: the plain green label with the usual version of FTOH, backed with Funky Funky Twist; and the far rarer issue on a slightly lighter green label with two black lines and I'm Having So Much Fun on the flip. I think the valuation of £700 for this particular issue is conservative these days and wouldn't be surprised if a copy were to be auctioned for in excess of £1000.

Wow, I'm glad I paid £40 quid for it way back when.. this title in its two green guises always seemed cheap to me in the late 8ts early 9ts, but then record pricing now can be likened to Boris Johnson's campaign for major!!CRAZY!!!

    M

  14. Keep in mind that the "blue label" copies with "I'm Having So Much Fun" on the flipside includes a DIFFERENT version of "First Taste Of Hurt" which has got a piano playing in the background and in my opinion inferior vocals.

The easier to find "green label" copies with "Funky Funky Twist" on the flipside has got the "usual" version of "First Taste Of Hurt" with organ playing in the background.

    Have a listen below.

    BLUE LABEL:

    GREEN LABEL:

By the way, I've heard rumours that the "green label" copy was issued twice with different flipsides. Is there any truth to that or have they confused it with the "blue label" issue? :D

your right, the Green issue has two flips, Funky twist and Having so much fun. I only heard that alt version(blue version) recently, initially it bowled me over but i reckon the better known has the better vocal... this is that Ed Summers / Joe Anderson problem, ideally you have em both!!

  15. I bought mine for the Mean man side, then I played What I'd do wrong, and I don't think I've played Mean man since!

Clara Wood - your after my Guy on Imperial had a good flip side, Old and Grey, well worth a listen..

One track I could never understand was that the "gotta Have money" side of the Exits on Gemini, for me it had to be Under the street lamp, maybe you would call it a double sider these days, gotta have Money just never touched the spot.

forgot to mention this one I bought recently:

Connie McGill & the Visions - Peace of mind / Sugar as apposed to the 'I wanna Be yours' side, very nice ballad track that has all the visions pitching in at various parts, something magical about the recording, you almost taste the studio they are in , well worth buying INHO..

  16. Reba Gunter was actually Cornell Gunter's mother. You are confusing her with Shirley Gunter, who was his sister.

Shirley and her group the Queens are said to be the first all-female R & B outfit , thus the direct precursor of the 60s ' girl groups' like the Marvelettes and Supremes. She never recorded for Federal, though - almost all of her records were cut for Modern. I compiled them all onto an Ace CD called "Oop Shoop" about 18 months ago.

She also made what is to my mind an excellent 45 for Tangerine in 1964, "Stuck Up" (written by the Pipkin brothers, who also wrote Mary Love's "I'm In Your Hands" and the Wooden Nickels' "Nobody But You", among other goodies). This was her last recording before she retired into domesticity.

She was rediscovered a few years ago and, although she's now totally blind, she can often be found playing the US rock 'n' roll revival shows on the west coast and in las vegas, where she now lives. She even came to the UK two Novembers ago to perform at "Rhythm Riot" - unfortunatley she was not well and did not give a particularly good account of herself on the night....

That told me!! laughs... Reba was deffo in a doo wop group on federal though have an Lp of material with some unissued sides I picked up in sydney, I'll dig it out..

You eat the Lexion of all soul Knowledge Tony? thats some very obscure info to have so quick to mind, for me it all goes in, but some times its comes out wrong if you get my meaning.. all interesting stuff though....especially the 521 discog, what else do you know about the label?
