  1. Berwick street is a Bun Fight, when I got to Soul Jazz records it was packed, I went up to the counter asked for the Sandra Wright LP, was told to fill in a form, which I did, then the lady says whats the number>? I had No Idea, so she says "you need to fill that out before I can serve you", so I said its ok, I'll go up to Soul Brother records in Putney to get it, its their release anyhow... I agree about the queuing, there was a couple shops that literally had cues round the block, madness... Mal
  2. Have to admit I winced a bit at some of the prices I was charged, but as a day with a bit of added excitement I was happy to pay those prices... I really enjoyed the day, it was nice to stand round a full counter, being thrown copies of tracks played, just as it used to be in shops in the eighties, reminded me of buying new House releases on a Sat morning at places like Don Cristie's in Birmingham... a quality 'Boys' experience.. lol M
  3. dont want to hijack the thread, but I'm sure those will sell with the big up were giving them, but get your chops round this lot....

  5. I love the seventies bootlegs, they are great to collect, as for the rare ones, there are a few, I have to say I'd have a multi coloured sam fletcher over a real one any day.,,, there is another from that batch, been discussed loads before.,, Chalkey is up on the info on those... Mal
  6. Fabulous thread, really interesting to see the older chaps standing their ground, and as some have said the emotions involved...still now... for all of us born after 69 he's just a name really, but I'd love to hear from him on here, I think some of you might even get stage fright! The mans very welcome in my book, what a life he's led and what a legacy he's left outside his own country.... Malcolm

  17. this may or May not qualify here, but it was new to me until I visited Soul Brother records yesterday... and a big topic of discussion at a soul do in Birmingham last night with a mate Jason Starr... If anybody reading this likes Jazz fusion, just buy this... absolutely brilliant.... Carlos Garnett - Anthology / Soul Brother Records Blurb from the label... Saxophonist Carlos Garnett was born in Panama in 1938 and moved to Brooklyn NY USA in 1962. He recorded with Freddie Hubbard, Andrew Hill and on Miles Davis influential funky electronic album ‘On the Corner’ in ‘72. He also played on Davis’ ‘Big fun’ and ‘Get up with it’ albums before recording five highly prized albums for the Muse label between 1974-1978. The albums include many Funky and Spiritual jazz tracks which have become Jazz Dance classics. These albums have become in demand and hard to find collectors items. All have recently been released on CD by Soul Brother Records to critical acclaim. Jazzwise magazine wrote of his material ‘If John Coltrane had recorded with James Brown this is how it may have sounded’. For Record Store Day 2015 Soul Brother Records have compiled a Double Vinyl LP featuring 12 of his most in demand tracks. To source all of these tracks on their original vinyl LP’s would cost in the region of £200. The tracks have been specially selected to include all of Carlos Dance floor classics plus some of his more spiritual Jazz epics. They have been re-mastered to a high standard. New artwork has been specially created for this release to capture the essence of the music. These tracks feature some of the best New York Jazz musicians of the mid 70’s plus incredible vocalists including a young Dee Dee Bridgewater on one of her first recordings. This Double LP will be a limited edition of 500 and is sure to a popular Record Store day release for Jazz fans and collectors who are generally not very well catered for on the day. 22. I wonder, how many of the people adding to this thread are Dj's? quite a few I think, your all certainly hard core collectors... I bet you lot wont ever agree on what 'Up Front' actually is, so how do you expect the people that come to your do's to make anything of the term? They cant, Its a bull shit term used to describe an imaginary selection of tracks, probably currently of the so called 'Funky' variety, played by a minority... as a collector I have to say I'm now bored shirtless with the term... But looking at the bigger picture from my little house here on the Chiltern Hills, I think the Soul scene is at a very big cross roads just now, there is a shift of ownership of 45's like no other, and I bet in years to come, the 'Northern' room and all the old 6ts / 7ts stuff will be the one at the back, and the stuff thats filling the main rooms will be predominantly new releases... and they will drop old tracks in to spice it up...that will be your 'Up front'... food for thought.. Mal.C
  23. here you go, I was thinking of the 'Driving Beat' Ep/Lp...
