  1. I'm probably not the best person to respond to this. However given the vast number of records out there, I find it hard to believe it is impossible to put together a set of expensive, inexpensive, known, unknown tunes which punters enjoy.
  2. Having given up after 3 songs on the radio, I have now watched it. Enjoyable yes, but I enjoyed the tribute to Aretha and the Dee Dee Bridgewater concerts more.
  3. An interesting read. As someone who hasn't been near a club for 20yrs and who has never paid more than £70 for anything, but is happy to have/had many rare records on DVD/Tape. I understand my view will be far from the norm. As some have said hearing something different, was what initially attracted me to various different northern/soul clubs from 73 onwards. Many of these songs may have seemed rare at the time, but in truth were scarce. This included many Cover Ups, something I never agreed with, due to the fact that whoever made the songs didn't do so to stay unknown. Some of these were far from rare. My personal take, is that rarity kicked in from Stafford onwards, when disposable incomes meant more collectors, not me I'm just a humble soul fan, started looking for rarities as they started to move beyond the 500. Does it matter, no. But as I said an interesting read from different perspectives.
  4. Interesting read. I heard the first 3 tracks, I thought Turning My Heartbeat Up was fine, next 2 less so and gave up at that point to have dinner. I will have to listen on sounds/I player for a more measured review.
  5. Just heard about this. RIP Tina, a true musical Icon and a ball of fire live. Proud Mary and River Deep two songs that never diminish in their intensity.
  6. On Jools Holland tonight. Interested in seeing them live.
  7. A giant of the scene. RIP Chuck.
  8. Never saw the need to take any, more money for records, though my mates were all off their heads.
  9. I think none of the following havent been listed yet. Start with my fav 2 live LPs. Bill Withers - Live At Carnegie Hall Maze - Live In New Orleans Al Green - Gets Next To You Bobby Womack - Poet 2 Donny Hathaway - Extensions Of A Man John Edwards - John Edwards The Jones Girls - The Jones Girls
  10. One of the greats who wrote and produced some of the iconic soul hits of our lifetime. The fact that so many were covered time and time again shows the longevity of these songs. Many thanks for the memories. RIP Thom
  11. Have a very merry Xmas to one and all and hope for a more peaceful world in 2023. In the words of the Gospel Classics "More Love That's What We Need"
  12. This has been an interesting little read. Off to the shops to add to my mince pie collection. Any specific recommendations will be gratefully received.
  13. Because it's a quality tune. Do you want my details for your will!!!
  14. Does that make me a collector of books then as I've hundreds? I just but them read them and haven't considered getting rid of them all though I do give some to charity shops now and then. They are mainly, bar a few, things ive read and placed on a shelf.
  15. Once you start talking about collectors for me it goes beyond I like that record I want to buy it and I think the cost is OK. A collector may be prepared to pay lots more because of the rarity or they may collect specific labels irrespective of whether they like it or not. What I would say is you can be a soul fan and be or not be a collector and that is what binds the audience here together, the rest will be down to personal circumstances and choice.
  16. Similar to others, stopped buying Vinyl a while ago, unless I see the odd bargain at a local second hand record shop. Never saw myself as anything other than a mainly soul fan, with odd bits thrown in, rather than a collector. Rarely paid more than £25 for anything. Changed to CDs at some point though these tend to be compilations now. Having converted all vinyl and CDs to sound files I have added the odd track at 79p or 99p since COVID as I have listened to more shows online and discovered odd things I didn't know have that I have downloaded.
  17. Couldn't agree more, it will be interesting to see how he shapes it.
  18. Following on from Chalky's news re Motown and Tina docs. Also on New year's Day on BBC2. An hour on Lamont put together by Trevor Nelson 9 pm to 10:00 Marvin live at Montreux (1980) 11pm to 12:40 Smokey at the electric proms 12:40 to 01:40 a 2009 concert celebrating 50 years of Motown
  19. As always top stuff, great company whilst driving without anyone to interrupt my toneless sing-a-long.
  20. Still haven't heard and no rush to do so. Even more weird is Nightshift, can't imagine it sang by Brucie.
  21. Motown for me, Atlantic would be before Stax.
  22. If Chalky's a dinosaur most people here are the earliest life form. As always great stuff.
  23. So sad, along with the Holland Bros, and Levi Stubbs, they were responsible for introducing me to the chapel that is soul music. Then to branch out as a solo artist and produce the catalogue he leaves behind is something I don't think has been equalled. So many of his greats have been mentioned, I'd just add 'Peddling Music On The Side' one of his underated tracks in my humble opinion. I know where on the shelves I will be heading this evening. RIP Lamont
  24. I would add a second word, unsurprisingly. Lets face it she never had a great voice, therefore time will only diminish it.
  25. I havent been clubbing for ages, but have still listened to lots online and I have no idea what the total is. The one thing I would say is trying to come up with an accurate figure now seems near impossible given the different genres that now, whether rightly or wrongly, fit under the Northern heading. I don't necessarily buy into it was played at a Northern do, therefore it is Northern. If that is true, Glenn Miller recorded Disco/Jazz/Funk way ahead of its time.
