  1. ========== although 'do the duck' comes close
  2. ============ Best advice I've ever heard in a n/s record is 'footsee yeah', says it all really
  3. Nah seriously..... Larry-Fekkin-Trider & his Carbon-fekkin-Copy! Hate it with a passion normally saved only for MUFC!
  4. ============= A mate of mine did me a tape of soulful house (as I kept slagging it off) and I really quite liked it. What I found out was the stuff I was slagging wasn't soulful house at all. Complete misconception on my part. Don't see the guy any more, but if it was played in the northern rooms (maybe an hour to start) don't think I'd turn my nose up. If it would bring in an younger element who might also like traditional sounding northern don't think that could be a bad thing. Winnie:-) PS. Maybe this subject could be moved to all about soul, might get some more comments? Just a suggestion
  5. ============ I know it's all down to personal choice, but how did moody woman damage the scene? Can't think of anything that really damaged the scene, cos it's still thriving. Lots of records that shouldn't have been played, but that's easy to say with hindsight, perhaps we have to put ourselves back 30/20 years and think what we thought of them then? Winnie:-)
  6. ============== Baz, James, and Matt Smart (all in their 20Ts) played great sets at Bedford on Sunday, and all had people dancing. There were some lulls, but that in the main was because there were a lot of people there who hadn't seen each other for ages, and also smokers had to go into the other room. So IMO none of the DJ's underperformed What younger DJ's do bring to the table is enthusiasm and passion (as well as their record collections) many times you can watch one of the older DJs performing and sort of smiling knowingly because he/she has certain 'well respected' sounds. I don't think that's the same with the younger lads, they openly enthuse, and that is the sort of thing that will sustain the scene. Younger people on the scene in general would be great, I agree with Dave in that respect, but don't agree younger people are not attracted because they view the scene as 'Aging grandads in vests and bags', what they probably view it as, is more a collection of people who have become complacent over the years. When it was more a vibrant dance scene, it was exciting, now it's become a more social orientated event, that is not going to appeal to the vast majority of youngsters IMO. Why would they want to socialise with the likes of us, they will have little in common to be honest. Winnie:-)
  7. ========== But Chalky you're effectively telling new/younger DJ that he/she will not be accepted onto DJ rosters if they play established sounds. To me that's enforcing the closed shop mentality, and also accepts that promoters can tell any DJ anywhere, what to play. Sorry don't agree with that philosophy. Winnie;-)
  8. I was just thinking this thread could easily be merged with the "45 min" one. New/younger DJ dilemma, who does he/she try to impress, the punters or the promoters. Full dance floor to me says 'job well done', but of course it may have been achieved through playing oldies, so whilst the promoter is happy with the dance floor reaction, it may not give the desired kudos amongst his/her fellow promoters. It must be really difficult for new/younger DJs in general because there seems to still be a bit of a closed shop mentality. No DJ should be told what to play, but just by saying new/younger DJs should be brave we're doing just that. If a younger DJ wants to play oldies why shouldn't he/she, the judgement should really come from the dance floor IMO Winnie:-)
  9. ========== Are you talking about well known established DJ's who's general music policy is known? Would you give 2 45 min spots or a 90 min spot to someone you didn't know? What if he/she isn't any good does that not reflect on the promoter? Winnie :-)
  10. ========== And that one had about 300 posts. Thinking about it now, we probably could never discover one record to unite us, because the scene itself isn't united. Reading through the various subsequent threads it becomes clear we can't even agree on what the term northern soul actually means. If you put up a thread saying, lets say 'northern soul' encompasses everything currently played someone would say NO. Think that's one of the reasons why we'll never find a record that unites us Winnie:-)
  11. ============ Surely the fundamental issue is whether the scene wants to move forward? You can be as brave as you like as a DJ, young or old, and take risks, but if the crowd isn't willing to come with you, ultimately you'll fail. People still like to dance, and some of the reactivated/newie/ stuff thats played just doesn't have the same zing to it IMO. 5/10 years time when most are too old to dance, DJ's will be able to play what they like cos it will mainly be background music to a more socially orientated event. Winnie :-)
  12. ============== Yes, but then again so are old SOUL DJs. I read your previous thread, what actual difference would being younger or older make to a soul night/nighter? Winnie:-)
  13. ============ things played at that time I've got a feeling Tell me it's just a rumour Uptight Keep on running You're ready now The joker Remember one night at the Addison Centre (Bedford) someone turning up with the Pointer Sisters, the 3 degrees, Johnny Bragg and getting Dave Lee Travis (guesting) to play them
  14. ========== Whilst Bedford isn't exactly the south, it's more south than Yorkshire. Remember various youth clubs, Westfield, Ampthill, Clapham (beds) Flitwick allowing their youth clubs to be taken over by those favouring northern soul. That was around 74/75. There was also 5 aside football and table tennis, but different nights were 'disco' nights. Winnie:-)
  15. ============= Hate Cochise, and still do......think the title must go to the Champion
  16. =========== I actually think it would be a good idea. Youngsters coming into the scene know far more motown initially than northern, it could be like a breeding ground. Natural progression from motown for most was northern, perhaps it could work again. Plus I still like hearing motown played, and don't mind the odd bit of club soul either Winnie:-)
  17. ============= At least they're dancing and not cuddling a pint all night
  18. ================= apologies mate, wasn't looking at it from that perspective
  19. =========== Pretty much agree with Baz Ian, don't think Gavin has succeeded in winding anybody up, he's said the same things he did 2/3 years ago, and recieved the same answers. Always will be like that unless he stumps up some proof of his allegations. IMO Winnie:-)
  20. ========== And one of mine, particularly in it's original venue
  21. ============ Who is this to Gavin, me? If so, as I've already said I went to all the Rockets bar 1 and danced at all of them, the music is what motivates me, not the rediculous political spats. The rocket failed cos it was the wrong time, and wrong place.... period. As I said previously if you have concrete proof of sabotage lets see it, then perhaps you'll win this argument! Winnie:-) PS. I also saw the guy giving out flyers outside, and as I recall they weren't for crossfire, they were for another event he promoted
  22. I was at the last rocket, and no way was there 400 in there. Less than 200 is far more accurate. I went to all of the rocket nighters bar 1 and to be honest enjoyed them all, although the first one was filled with students, and to be honest IMO it was never going to take off. Too bigger a venue and not enough people, it wasn't to do with it being sabotaged as I remember. If you have proof Gavin, why not produce it, then all this conjecture will cease. Winnie:-) last rocket alniter was not run by KR so i expect 200 or less infact more like 50 as they can only use downstiars now !!!!!!!!!!!! ========== I'm talking about the last one run jointly. Kev opened up the evening with good evening London. Was at the table right near the stage, left before 6 cos it just didn't get going. As I said, I have fond memories of the place, back in the day it would have been a top venue, but unfortunately IMO it was 25 years to late. No reflection on who promoted it, London was just not the right location! Winnie:-)
  23. Well thats not hard , when you only have a 8ft square dance floor compard to 160m2 of rocket dance floor. rocket had 400 in last time KR promoted it and failed, if you get 4 in tonight Stuart you will be on this list telling everyone what a great and soul full nite you had !!!!!!!!! boys will be boys ============ I was at the last rocket, and no way was there 400 in there.
