  1. ========== Ginger will change his spot to suit a venue, he did it at Desborough last night, but Sam, Arthur, Butch don't think they do as such. I've read a number of times that the ethos of the scene is about discovering new sounds, or reactivating underplayed oldies, wouldn't front line DJ's be failing in their duty to educate if they played safe when they visited a soul night? Surely if a soul night books Sam etc they know what they'll get, I can't believe they'd ask him, or anyone else to water down their sets The point I'm making is that a lot of people going to soul nights are also reasonably discerning about what they want to hear. It may have been my imagination but the initial post seemed to be implying that those going in the main to soul nights were second class citizens. Not saying you're saying that Ged, and if I've got it wrong apologies to the thread starter, just how it looks to me? Winnie:-)
  2. =========== I'm quite partial to the four vandals.
  3. ========= I take it you were working in the lab late last night? =============
  4. ============ I think the new additions to the line up Butch etc may have cured that somewhat??
  5. =========== They don't do every nighter in the country either? I've been to nighters all over the country, the only two which I would say stood out as playing more cutting edge than safe-ish are the 100 club and Lifeline. I'm told the Wilton has a similar policy, but not having been I can't comment. Most of the nighters have a bar at least until 2 and the Marrs and Queens Hall later, so not sure that has a great deal of relevance? Would definitely agree the Jocks get a little longer at nighters, although I think the 100 still does 2 half hour spots for each DJ (someone correct me if I'm wrong please ), so they can diversify and really show their worth which is no bad thing.
  6. ========== Pete's way out, there are 7 or 8 better records than you don't love me
  7. ============ I meant as in totals going to soul nights, and totals going to nighters. Generally one nighter per week, and only Stoke attracts that figure, so it would be very rare that the normal nighter crowd would outnumber the normal soul night crowd.
  8. =========== Could also be cos they're a smaller crowd and see each other more regularly?
  9. With free twister mat inside
  10. ============= Can see a lot of sense in what you've said Pete.
  11. ============ What nighter plays totally different music to soul nights? Seen Sam, Arthur, Ginger, Kenny B, Mick H at plenty of soul nights, even Butch occasionally, don't they include tracks they'd play in their nighter sets? Surely that's what they were booked in the first place for?
  12. ============ I would say NO, but am interested to know why they may be percieved as different. Winnie:-)
  13. ============ Excellent post Jim
  14. =========== Agree they are safe, and agree that more underplayed stuff should get an airing, I've never advocated oldies only, but do accept some people prefer them. What I didn't agree with was describing Stormy, Gone with the wind etc etc, as handbag music. Winnie:-) PS. No you're not being unreasonable
  15. =========== Agree with you there Si, wonder if that makes me a handbagger, a pi*s head or a slapper
  16. ============= Great idea for a thread, congrats mods History and background of the scene is always interesting
  17. =========== I feel both humbled and pleased at this obvious breakthrough
  18. ==============
  19. ========== Cheers Rach, maybe Mike knows? Know he was on line a couple of days ago, he posted in the played out oldies thread
  20. ========= Rach didn't SS go down for a few hours last week. Could the PMs have been lost?
  21. ============ Stolen hours, Stormy, Don't pity me, A little togetherness, Gone with the wind....pop? The lunatics have finally taken over the asylum
  22. ========== Worse than Cochise, footsee, under my thumb, hawaii 5-0, 9 times out of ten, Joe 90...... I think not
  23. ============== Footsie - Wigan's Chosen Few / Stolen Hours - Patrice Holloway / Breakin Down The Walls Of Heartache - Johnny Johnson / Heaven Must Have Sent You - The Elgins / We're In This Thing Together - Peaches and Herb / Gone With The Wind - Rita and the Tiaras / Stormy - Supremes / Are You Ready For This - The Brothers / Don't Pity Me - Joanie Sommers / I'm In Love With You - Bobby Patterson / A Little Togetherness - The Younghearts / Gimme Some Lovin - Spencer Davis *Mod spot* / Soul In The Sun - Tommy Hunt * exclusive 1st radio play ever* / 6X6 - Earl Van Dyke / The Snake - Al Wilson / Just Can't Live My Life - Linda Jones / Give In You Just Can't Win - Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell / Where Have You Been - Arthur Alexander / Don't Send Nobody Else - Ace Spectrum / Mr Pitiful - Otis Redding / Comfort Me - Carla Thomas ============== Reproduced the first playlist for discussion. Granted a lot of those records have been played a great deal, but a blueprint for many soul nights? Where do you or anyone else hear the ones highlighted on a regular basis. I certainly haven't.
  24. ================ I'm really confused by this Baz, I always took you for someone who liked to know the history of records, obviously I'm wrong. Your knowledge of records is far superior to mine, thats clearly come across when we've chatted, so how did you acquire the knowledge if you weren't interested?
  25. ============ Don't people do that then? Don't think everyone leaps onto the floor just cos something was played at Wigan. In my experiene most people dancing either know the record, or it has something immediate about it. Not sure where 'my proposal' was broken, but first time I remember hearing it, was at the dome, think David Flynn played it, loved it straight away and danced to it. Don't personally think many people differ from that. Initially thought you were on about references to the 'big venues' on SS, but see what you mean now. I've heard some very well respected DJ's say where a record is from, Detroit, Philadelphia etc and go on to say where and when it was first played. Doesn't particularly worry me, as long as they're not gassing over the tune Why do people put up playlists on SS? Cos it's interesting to some, same as it's interesting where and when a record was broken, and if somebody gives the wrong venue, they're normally corrected within a few posts.......really can't see a problem with it myself. Winnie:-)
