  1. Not really, the thread is a hypothetical, this would be about an individual. I have mailed James to see if he wants to comment
  2. Would it not be better to hear it first hand from James himself, should he wish to talk about it? Winnie
  3. One of the best posts on the thread IMO.
  4. Sorry if I gave that impression, I wasn't stating as a fact Matt, it was a question, because I was under the impression that whilst cheapies are played, there are still a lot of big ticket items also on the decks, so to be a ''top'' DJ, would you have to have some or all of those. I'm talking ''top'' in the literal sense of the word, cos I think that was what Ian was asking initially, as opposed to 'top' he/she has good taste.
  5. So the crux of the whole debate is really, Ian's definition of a top DJ. Without using boots or pressings you could be a top DJ on the ''underplayed'' scene relatively cheaply, by the same criteria, no boots or pressings, you would have to fork out a fortune to be a top oldies DJ. So on the ''underplayed'' scene, I take it there are very few big ticket items?
  6. Steve, do you mnd me asking if you have any of those records on Ian's list, and if you do, would you never have them in your playbox when you're behind the decks? Winnie
  7. Thats a couple of times I've noticed this in one of your posts, what does it mean? An east Midlands ref I'm talking about. Just asking
  8. God gets to enjoy himself, hopefully he'll give up the wrath, do a splits and up into a nifty spin........
  9. Seriously, is that the ethic of the upfront venues these days. I was at early lifeline nighters at Sheridans and then the Fox, don't recall that being the edict. 100 club regular for years, again never seen the dancefloor ignored, yeah you've got to believe in what you're playing, but if you take none or little notice of the dance floor then the bookings will, or should dry up. I'll be amazed if Andy D, Butch, Chalky or any of the other upfront DJs would hold this view?? Winnie
  10. I don't think either the Nolans or Kylie have been played at northern nights Bearsy, Kylie's version is from the mid 9Ts, they're just examples of how bad things could be
  11. and for a quality ender..... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C1PxrhjvSGU
  12. Agreed, to have any relevance it would have to be done amongst quite a big cross section but if you say, took a hardened knowledgeable veteran of the soul scene, and this 'never touched', be interesting to see where and why, the differences in taste, if there were to be any, would occur.
  13. That's a brill idea Waz, wonder if the selections would change dependent on age/gender........
  14. Purely as a member of soul source this is what I thought. Gene's initial thread starting post was clearly designed to promote debate, the use of the term 'soul snobs', though potenitially inflammatory, was a generalisation of a common perception and aimed at no one in particular. Your reply was way over the top, and uncalled for for two main reasons. 1) You personalised your attack because you didn't agree with his opinion/comment/subject matter 2) By personalisiing your comments you changed the nature of the thread, from one of debate to a slanging match and by continually repeating it ie: ''peurile and pathetic'', the 'blue eyed soul' issue of the debate gets lost in amongst the natural human trait of having to defend yourself. I'll repeat this is my own personal view, and from my perspective as a lay member of soul sourceWinnie
  15. and from the ashes a phoenix arose.............
  16. that's called 'bustin a move' in some circles........ you're my mellow would still get me moving to the dancefloor
  17. Major Lance, 'you don't want me no more' 'Time' might be a decent example as well
  18. I think someone posted it in freebasing Matt. It is Keb by the looks of it, also think Liam is in it as well
  19. I'm a bit confused by this 'doom and gloom' post Tommo. You've said you've started collecting again, but then told people don't buy records as the scene only has a short shelf life, as we're all about to drop off this mortal coil, it's a bit contradictory don't you think? Reading between the lines with talk of being 'ripped off' and 'northern soul snobbery' it feels like you have something else to say?? Apologies if I'm reading it wrongly Winnie
  20. got sent it as well, have now deleted, don't mind discussing things then forming an opinion, hate have an opinion foisted upon me Winnie ;-)
  21. this question has been asked so many times and as ever there is no difinitive answer, it's the tiniest bit different to each person, the only constant is an emotional connection and that goes for every genre of music IMO
  22. Not sure if this has been posted, but there is a profile on him on BBC4 tonight 11pm
