  1. Quite like Mini nighters, but have found myself wanting more on a few occasions. Avoid ''till late'' nights like the plague, because they rarely are, much prefer an end time so that I can make an informed decision. I can remember this topic coming up before, and seem to recall that nights that finished at 6 in the morning weren't considered nighters by everybody in the traditional sense of the word.
  2. WDYWIISBL?
  3. Balance to me would be a DJ who keeps me interested/dancing through his/her set with different genres, non stop of one thing or other bores me and puts people back in certain boxes.
  4. ......anybody got a sound clip......................
  5. From the Bradford area, can't remember his shirt, had a bit of a Joe Brown haircut if that helps, looked a lot slimmer than your average 'soulie'
  6. Chris somebody, never said his second name, mentioned the Wheel and a couple of soul artists, Isleys and Otis R. Sorry couldn't be any more help
  7. Cheers Suz, will go and have a look
  8. If it was on this week and you know the day I'll check the I player?
  9. But he gave us ''jingle jangle jewellery'' and fixed loads............
  10. I take the inference to be there would be no need for 'cheating kind' to be played to replicate the mecca, and that the playing of CDs is ''cheating'' and also not representative of the mecca
  11. There's a lot I like, but the one who's always just ahead of the pack for me is Soul Sam
  12. faux pas......... sorry
  13. But you are more accepting of the CD in general Steve as is Cliff, I'm talking from the perspective if it hasn't been released its fine to play it off of a CD, which I wouldn't disagree with. I also think if it's a local night, with the attendees being people who don't travel, it's fine there as well. I'd even go as far as to say, it's ok at a revival night (not that my opinion matters in the big scheme of things) but where we part company is deciding it's ok for certain DJs but not others. That's an inconsistent view with previous OVO threads, to my recollection, but then I can't ever remember one of Colin's sets being introduced into evidence I think Richard S and Soul Sam would be treated with the same reverence if they went down the same route, but woe betide Chris King, Russ, or even Kev R if they did similar. That's the bit I don't get, legendary status of a DJ is subjective, there are probably more people who would consider Russ/Kev as bigger contributors to the northern scene than Colin, yet they would undoubtedly get vilified for taking a similar option. Just doesn't make sense to me that's all
  14. Have you never been on an OVO thread before Steve? They generally last some time, don't feel obliged to answer if we're keeping you awake/sending you to sleep/stopping you putting the potatoes on
  15. Martin is mocking the gist of the thread Andy, as in it appears to be ok for some, but not others
  16. That's just a matter of opinion and is subjective, no one can deny that both have legendary status on the northern scene, so I can't see just where the argument is, as you put it, lost.
  17. That was sort of answered previously by someone, Russ was certainly referenced, can't find the post, but it was a NO. Pete we've been on source for almost the same amount of time, how many times have you seen this argument come up, I've certainly lost count. And until now it was always the same, it must be OVO, but because it's CC it's ok? That's certainly a new one on me
  18. Well if that doesn't reignite the topic nothing will
  19. I think you're missing the point somewhat. You've been on SS for sometime, so you must have witnessed in the past the 'battle royals' that have raged over OVO or A.N.Other Medium. Some of the posters within this thread have been avid supporters of OVO and argued that very point, yet their position has altered due to the subject being CC? I'm not disrespecting Colin's standing on the soul scene, or his history, I'm simply asking why there might be double standards being applied, and who else might benefit from this 'softer' outlook.
  20. I'm really not getting this, there are posts on here excusing CC for playing CDs from some of the fiercest defenders (under normal circumstances) of OVO. Whilst I understand there is a great deal of respect for Colin, why does he have a get out of jail card and are there any other DJs who would get similar treatment should they go down the CD route in the future?
  21. Things were a bit different then though Rob, young teenagers, filled with testosterone with affiliations to football clubs and associated violence, there was always going to be the odd punch up. We're now in our 4Ts and 5Ts, why is it still happening?
  22. That's not really the point though is it Rich, saying there's worse out there doesn't solve what's perceived as an increasing problem. Presumably people who go to hip hop and ragga nights go because they like the music and everything associated with it. Same for people, or it was, on the northern scene, we expect a bit more when it comes to etiquette, is it really too much to ask?
  23. I would say it's steadily been on the increase in the last 8 to 10 years, because that's about the period more and more people have found out (outside of the scene) that there's somewhere to go out when you're 40+, and when I say go out I mean out in a club environment. I would say that the number of incidents increasing coincides with the huge number of events available, and that there's easy access to finding out about soul nights/nighters via the net. One of the things that set our scene apart from the run of the mill, was the friendliness, I don't mean life long friendships, I mean immediate acceptance because we recognised in each other a love of soul music. That is sadly having to change because there are just so many people on the scene nowadays that don't have the same interests that encouraged most of us to take those initial steps in the first place. .
  24. Have PM'd you
