I think it's commendable that you're not worried about it Gogs, but personally think you should be included. Apart from being pretty much a resident, as a punter I'd like to see a full list of DJs. On the actual question, if you've DJd once at the venue in the past, why would you be on the venue's next event flyer?

Forgive typos please, using my phone rather than a computer tongue emoticon Skegness weekender and where to start? I could begin with a gushing wordy review of the music, venue, promoters, value for money, DJS, committed PROPER soul fans.... but I've done that many times in the past, and somethings are a given, and ever consistent. This is Skeg, the dancers dance, that's what they've come here for, novel idea that hopefully will catch on at nighters across the country. Wierdly, they smile and appear to be enjoying themselves, almost certainly part of that feeling of belonging which prevails, but then what would you expect from an event, where the promoters Donna Dean, Micheal D Cooper and David Raistrick meet you as you go in. Through the night they'll ask whether you're enjoying yourself, maybe a few other events might follow this template but that's asking a lot of northern's stand perfectly still evolvement, with the notable exception of Cleethorpes!! The most refreshing thing? There is a lack of Billy Bigbolloxity politics, Skeg clashed with another event, there was no wringing of hands, or snide digs, just acceptance that this occurs, and a willingness to try and avoid similar happening in the future. So much for not being wordy lol. Musically, Soul Sam, Arthur Fenn, Bob Snow, Dick Krop, Steve Guarnori,Andy Powell, amongst many others, create the "Behave, all in the same venue, at the same time" wonderment, and this really is testament to their quality that I need say nothing more on that topic. So to the thing I really want to get off my chest. In the era of "The fast buck, and fuck the punters", a venue that actively keeps piss heads out, and shows true ethical nous. Numbers were down, couldn't be missed really, an opportunity to swell the crowd with 40 local topers would have been gleefully accepted at lesser venues, NOT HERE!!! They were turned away, we were put first, and that is the definition of ethics in my book, and one of the things that will keep me returning. This one act was so appreciated, and I can say hand on heart, that whilst we as punters chatted about the numbers, not a single person said that they DIDN'T enjoy the weekender. A lot is written about the state of the soul scene, but looking at it objectively, mostly by people with an agenda. Their own venue, their own egos are clearly in play, and IMO they are only paying lip service to the northern scene. A lot like to "be seen" at whatever flavour venue is fashionable, it's incredibly shallow, The Grand Central, Skegness is an oasis, on the arid tundra, FFS quench your thirst properly!! Oh, I danced a lot

Personally I think it's false advertising and is milking the northern scene for all the wrong reasons. I take the point it isn't aimed at us, but when this mythical youngster watches the advert, and thinks I'll have me some of that, exactly which venue is he or she going to go to, to be in amongst other young like minded souls? It's just yet another money making scheme in my view, attach some adverts to the CD that talk of Butlins dance classes, and giant trousers and a glimpse of the future is at hand. I can see a point when The Wheel, Torch, Casino, 100 club and Mecca won't even be referenced any more, and if a certain DJ/promoter (RW) lives long enough and who's already spouting that there were never any drugs at the Casino, gets his way, will be proclaiming that Butlins was the true birth of northern soul. I repeat, nothing to do with introducing youngsters, new starters to the scene IMO.

Question Time. A group of experts from the various camps, get together, and attempt to influence and educate the 'Hoi Polloi' with the usual invective ridden, round and round the houses diatribe, that bores the arse of the audience, who just want to dance. This 'enjoy yourself whilst you're out' phenomena should be discussed ad infinitum until one of the experts explains it away as a devastating sickness, that ultimately will see the end of the northern scene, at which point the panel spontaneously stand up, and start slapping each other on the back, for their incredible insight. The four people left in the audience are then asked to cascade the info down to the masses....

If you're not playing to your crowd at an event, just who are you playing too, sounds like an ego trip to me. How anybody can have a 'if you don't like this unknown/rarely played' record is beyond me, how does anyone place their own opinion above someone elses. This is coming from someone who doesn't mind hearing something different, but ultimately I go to dance, it doesn't matter to me if you think it's danceable, it's whether I do, and for me read any punter who goes to dance rather than listen. That will come to us all soon enough, don't hurry it along, or try to get us acclimatised to what our future holds.

Probably, I don't hold high hopes for it, but I'll feel justified having a moan up about it, should the need occur.

I've seen it, there's a couple of good spins by Michael Jackson, end of review.

How Big Was The Northern Soul Scene In The 70S ?
Winnie :-) replied to arnie j's topic in All About the SOUL
I don't think it was as big as some people remember, my area Bedfordshire, around 73/74 you'd take a box of records with you on a normal night out, wait for the DJ to play a few, go and dance and be joined by maybe 10 others. Obviously it was bigger in other areas, and at any dedicated night, but the country wasn't awash with nighter goers, which sometimes is the impression given nowadays. Today's scene and most of us still on it, have been joined by people who are of similar age, and have taken their rightful place because Uncle Albert's 4th cousin removed went, so they feel entitled. -
Poll: Youtube Video's Of Current Events Dancefloors
Winnie :-) replied to Mike's topic in All About the SOUL
Funnily enough just watched one, and the bloke being filmed, was doing the invisible hoola hoop move, and incorporating what appeared to be an ancient form of the twerk, not a style I remember well.... -

The thing that perplex's me the most is that presumably these people can't dance to any sort of music to begin with, so what would suddenly make someone pick northern as a style to learn? They've surely not been secretly desperate for X amount of years to learn the footsie because they once heard the music, pick your own scenario, I'm going with... because they once heard the music at an aqua aerobics class, and they just haven't been able to express their eternal cerebral connection, through the medium of the front crawl. I suppose they could have been bitten by a radio active Binstanley and instantly mirrored his renowned altruism where all things northern are concerned, but this seems just as unlikely as he doesn't strike me as someone who leaves much on his plate come meal time and he wouldn't have stopped at a nibble. Maybe we should just put it down to a stroke of good fortune, and accept that it was decreed in the stars, Mars aligned with Uranus and what could have been a sticky chocolatey bum situation, was avoided because Pluto decided to give northern soul dancing tuition. An enigma indeed...

Being totally honest, I haven't registered the lyrics as I was muttering to myself, ''Why did you even offer to put this question up''. Even with my limited knowledge I was pretty sure I wasn't in the presence of an unheard of masterpiece. I think it's safe to say I can close the thread. Thanks for the input gents

Mark on analysing your reply I am left in 2 minds. On the one hand there is the remote chance that you're bad mouthing the record in the hope of finding a box of 50, thereby making your fortune. The other option is, and this is only my interpretation from reading between the lines of your reply, you think it best for me to go back to the 2 lads making the enquiries about said track, and ask them to look up the meaning of the word shite in an on line dictionary, upon which they'll discover this video as the given definition.

don't know if this has been asked on here, just seen someone on another site saying he must know the identity of the singer and the title of the song. He said he'd asked everywhere, but just on the off chance I thought I'd check with the experts. Not really worried about hearing reviews of the record, it's not my personal cup of tea, but if you want to, what the heck, if no one can identify it, I can count up the ''It's sh*t'' and the ''It's great'' comments and see which one comes out on top. Thanks in advance

I was added to a casting group on facebook Byrney, didn't even know it existed. Within a couple of days this job came up, no description at all, apart from that it was for an advert. As I was at a loose end that whole week, I thought it might be fun and keep me busy. I said to the group admin, if it's in any way tacky, I wouldn't get involved, this all happened on a Monday. Tuesday, some sad news broke, which put me on the back foot, but I'd already pretty much decided it wasn't for me as there were no details to hand, and that made me suspicious. Not the group admin's fault, they just hadn't been told where, when or what the advert was about. On the Thursday, and still in the dark, I got an e-mail, think it was at 7 at night, asking me to bring any memorabilia I'd saved and my clothes from the 7Ts and to be in Manchester, at 11 the next morning for the audition. This was from the people actually making the advert, so I wrote back to them and said, can't do it, but thanks for the opportunity, and that was that. So boredom made me consider it, but reality and realisation that I'm not really that person stopped me. I'm not against the media, no point being like that really, if they want to get involved, nothing will stop them, but I also thought back to a recent Nuneaton nighter the one that Paul Mason was interviewing people at, and my reactions when I encountered him outside. I turned my back, just in case he tried to interview me, I wasn't being purposely rude, just didn't want to be involved.

It's a bit 'oh grampa what big eyes you have' ...

Dignified? Is it more dignified to wander around venues stumbling, mumbling drunk, stopping only on the odd occasion to nod in appreciation as the next unheard of dirge hits the decks, or to get out and enjoy yourself dancing, like we all used to? For me it's the latter. I don't wear the clobbed, but don't hAve an aneurysm when I see someone who does :-)

I'm not trying to be disrespectful here Mick, but can I just point out, it's mostly the oldies crowd that refer to themselves as soulies. The point I'm making is that there does seem to be a certain amount of crossover (insert comical musical reference here) between the two groups, oldies/upfront. There was a thread a couple of months ago, and some lad was on about making a thread, Russ Vickers came up with a brilliant plot for him, but even if it were to be made, wouldn't that also put us once again in the media spotlight. Can we ever really get away from the vest and bags image?

You're American, so I'm not ruling out gun powder either
