  1. That's what you've got your betamax for Tony
  2. It's surely 'catch 22' without the obvious oldies, you wouldn't attract the number of punters needed to sustain it, plus if one promoter was monopolising the event, I would guess it would lead to bitterness and backbiting, My feeling, it's a bit of a non starter these days
  3. Nearer 70 if he's a mod in 64 surely
  4. I think this is absolutely the right attitude. I used to write reviews for a couple of magazines, and some web-sites, always did it off my own back so no payment was involved, then it became like a job because I found I was sought out to write reviews, that brings different problems. Whether I had a good night was suddenly irrelevant, I was trying to gauge others feelings, it was time consuming, and could lead to petty squabbles, so I stopped. Bottom line is, Jellybean's summing up is perfect, if you enjoyed the night yourself, say so, if you didn't, maybe others did, so a negative review could be unfair.
  5. Maybe even a bit earlier Pete, cos My Mrs had 'granny sandals' and we got married in 77 and she definitely had them before then.
  6. Don't really consider it a dirty secret, just a piece of music that can still bring out goose pimples. Jerry Williams - If you ask me
  7. Flynny Carl Fortnum Dave Abbott Nick Brown Pete Hulatt
  8. I've seen him this year, don't know if he's still DJ'in though, he's certainly one I used to think was worth going somewhere for.
  9. This doesn't already happen?
  10. I find it tedious, and talking of over rated, Jeanette comes into that sphere for me as well, I think because of it's popularity I compared it to what I consider classic sounds and thought it came up short.
  11. I don't think I'll ever truly understand the northern scene (probably why I've given up trying) I honestly can't remember a record I liked and no longer do, there are records I don't want to hear again, because I've heard them so many times, but that's obviously different. I can't stand 'you're ready now', and yet I love 'one wonderful moment', but I can't explain the reasons why, I know one triggers the gotta dance impulse, whilst the other causes inertia. It's not because it's Frankie Valli, I still like 'touch the rainchild'. Who knows, I certainly don't.
  12. I like it, and not because you've said you don't know anyone who likes it. When the scene was a northern scene, it fitted perfectly IMO, and would still dance to it now
  13. George Pepp - The feeling is real Dottie and Millie - Talkin' bout my baby Lada Edmund Jr - The larue Margaret Little - Love finds a way Dean Barlow - third window....... Think they're all stinkers, soz
  14. I tend to look at where a venue is, if it's in the town/city centre I'd be more likely to avoid it because of the possibility of late drinkers. When I say late drinkers I'm referring to the kind that just come into a venue because of the late bar, rather than the music. I know some promoters will run quite a strict door policy, so I'd give them a go, if I hadn't been In general though, no area has put me off completely, just because of it's reputation.
  15. Duke Browner for me as well plus tightrope - Inez and Charlie Foxx You've been gone to long - Ann Sexton at the top of the stairs - Collins and Collins Umpteen others ;)
  16. Let's hope Hanna Barbera doesn't read soul source
  17. Is it now salem source..........
  18. I know we've done this many times before, but the format music is being played off of, would have very little impact IMO to kids coming onto the northern scene. We're old, we're grumpy, we're set in our ways, when ''kids'' go out they want to identify with the other people around them, not many will do that surrounded by OAPs. You said in post 40 ''it's not even northern soul'', citing it's release date as the reason, can it look forward to being embraced in 2042 or is it forever consigned to the bins because it's not a 6Ts release? Personally I think it's time the parameters were widened, so that quality music from any era can take it's rightful place.
  19. excellent, but there'll probably always be a some reason or other not to play it on this progressive scene of ours...........
  20. Suddenly I feel very inadequate.......
  21. I've just read it but would say, not all the records were memorable, which is the same for any genre and any time period within soul music and the soul scene, so whilst the Eddie Floyd record might not be stunning, it still measures up to and goes beyond the poorer records played early doors. If you're saying the funky edged northern isn't producing a 'ton of dynamite' or an 'it's all over me' or even a 'so is the sun' then I'd probably agree with you, but that would almost certainly be down to my distinct lack of knowledge in the area. What I do know is, that I've been sent the odd CD from someone playing that kind of music out, and I've really liked them, and thought they've fitted a northern criteria.
  22. Surely it's about what's right for some clubs now, at one time Muriel Day, the Ventures, Brian Hyland etc all fitted the template and for me, this is better than all of those.
  23. I don't think I'm explaining myself very well, when I say dinosaurs, I don't mean, I want to hear the same tunes all the time, I mean, I have my own understanding of how northern should sound, so if I go to an exclusively northern night, I expect to hear that sort of thing ie: tempo, structure of the song etc. If I go to an across the board night, (which is my preference) then I'm much more open minded, same as when I used to go to the predominately rare nights, I suppose it's all about the packaging. I think it was Chalky who said earlier in the thread, he prefers the term Rare soul, can't disagree with that, because I think it allows for all genres to be played, but if the night gets advertised as Northern soul, then if it's not traditional, there's going to be criticism, nature of the beast, as far as I can make out.
