Poll: Bbc Culture Show - Northern Soul - Your Take ?
Winnie :-) replied to Mike's topic in All About the SOUL
I agree with the part about the youngsters, but if they walked into a venue with their underpants showing over the top of skater jeans, they'd probably be viewed with suspicion, and almost definitely have the pi*s taken out of them. I don't wear 'the uniform' myself, and in the past I've been critical of those who do, but thinking about it for a moment, what are we supposed to wear and who decides? Trousers and a shirt? Jeans and T-Shirt? A mix and match. Can the shirt have a logo? It's a minefield, and if we've got to please the fashionistas before we begin to enjoy the night and the music, what chance have we got? -

Just heard a rumour that Jackie Chan has been lined up to appear at a northern soul weekender next year. He is to be backed up by Chuck Norris and the Nunchucks.... -
Looking at the comments, it appears Keep the Faith has become a very superficial term so perhaps ''Keep the Froth'' would be more suitable

Whilst we're at it, how come that bloke, Ian somebody or other, didn't get some rattle on here for that tie dye purple shirt he was wearing....... Yes I know it was Ian D, before anybody takes me seriously ;) -
I like to 'fist bump' when I see a member of me fam innit, usually accompanied with ''gimme a spud''
-
Strangely enough Kev I was thinking exactly along those lines. It's an all encompassing slogan, straight from the pamphlet 'How to be a soulie' and now signifies (to me and obviously to you) a commercial interest

In fairness I think the women have worn a lot better than us lot -
It seems strange writing this, as I've just made a comment defending persons in baggy trousers and circle skirts, but here goes anyway. The phrase makes me cringe, I won't pretend I've never said it, I'm sure I must have in the seventies, but I was a teenager. At that time I did think northern was a way of life and when I came back on the scene, I signed off with KTF occasionally, but now the phrase has transcended. It's not so much a phrase now as a catchphrase ''good game, good game'', and I really am starting to visualise Brucie using it in that dancing programme. So when someone says 'Keep the Faith' to me, am I supposed to make the little fist salute and wobble it back and forth in a show of solidarity, I'm so confused. What do the rest of you think, am I the only one who finds it cringe-worthy, do any of you still use it yourselves? What does it actually mean. Please advise, because I think it's time it went into room 101. Over to you

I think that's really harsh. I'm not a lover of baggies/circle skirts myself, but if you know these two at all you'd know they're extremely dedicated, and not just arrived and got dressed up. They run a successful nighter and soul night, and neither have any airs or graces.- 694 comments

I thought it was pretty good, Elaine came across well and Paul Mason seemed very enthusiastic. Biggest problem for me was the assertion that 'the dance styles' emanated from Kung Fu. Just seen Pete's comment, and I know Keb used to incorporate some moves into the drops but please. Right best get myself down to the Dojo to perfect my spinning round house kick in preparation for my next visit to a soul night. ''Enter the drag queen'' here I come -

Steve, Isn't the bottom line: Some good records were played at Wigan or anywhere else for that matter. Current venues are still playing records from old haunts, nobody is playing entirely new stuff all night (in the 'northern' sense of new stuff) so the myth/celebration will forever continue. Whether the 'venue' is calling their night 'A Wigan Revival' is besides the point to me, because everyone is still playing records blooded at said venue. I realise that's looking at it a bit matter of factly, but we're never going to get away from our history are we?
-
Jim, I don't travel the way I used to, so hold onto your hopes buddy Win
-
I genuinely prefer the records being played to be originals Baz, but I wouldn't go as far as checking the DJ list these days. Honestly speaking, I don't enjoy the drive home any more, even though my partner Jackie and I regularly share the driving.
-
But Steve, If we get rid of the 'Wigan Anniversary' nights where will we all go?

*Those who aren't bothered. **People who think along those lines generally don't inhabit these sorts of threads, or if they do they certainly don't comment on them. ***That's a bit of a leap Penny, whilst I realise you've said ''I suspect'', it's still not based in fact is it. The simple reasons for people not putting up counter arguments is that they don't want to be judged, and don't feel a need to have their choices in life justified.
-
Jim, You want honesty mate? Most of the people who'll bother to contribute to this thread will be in favour of OVO and so at the end of it, it'll read like we all would prefer it. The problem is that those who don't care, and I include myself in this to some degree, because I've never checked the decks before deciding whether to dance or not, won't come within a million miles of the thread, so you won't get a true representation of an alternative view or a counter argument because those who don't care probably make up 90% of the scene. I will say that I prefer it if the records I'm listening too are original vinyl and I trust the DJs I know to be playing it, but I'm not a stickler.

BBC2 Culture Show - Northern Soul Tonite Wed 25th Sept 2013

I'll plus it, and probably watch it at the same time, ready to come and get those memories...... -
I think the thread has pretty much ran it's course now, thanks to all those who contributed, as Lenny said, all done without any cross words. If it does need opening again because you have a new perspective to add, let me know and I'll unlock it for another day or so. Once again thanks Winnie

Same question would apply though Len (and Chalky) do they consider themselves promoters, or is it us calling them promoters. In general we're talking about a small local night, once a month, once a quarter, usually put on by a group of friends. They only have the one night. That wouldn't be a promoter in my book. Another question that arises: When would someone be accepted as a promoter/DJ does said person only achieve that status when they DJ at certain places. Would said person receive the accolade of promoter only after a specific period of time?
-
I think that's an excellent point Carms, do the people playing the records actually term themselves DJs or are we affording them the title just to prove a point?
-
I think you'd have to break it down further Pete, loads of people would come on to look at Events, but might never venture in the other sections, so I'd guess a much higher percentage actually visit the site.

Good God NO Barry, you'll never see me with headphones buddy, it would cover my luxuriant full head of hair
