The Icemen 'It's time you knew' Ole-9 £700.00 ono A rare one from the box of our dear friend Jim, who lost his battle with cancer in 2007. His mother has asked me to pass on his records, and all proceeds from their sale will go to her. (She's going to get a nice shock whenever this one sells.) I think this is the first record by The Icemen - the same duo as on Samar and ABC. It's a good northern dancer, and the flip is a great version of the Manhattans' 'It's gonna take a lot (to bring me back baby)'. This predates the Manhattans and I presume is the original version, but maybe some soul nerd out there could confirm that. Normally this record has blue vinyl, but this is a rarer, black vinyl one. The label is mint, 'It's time you knew' ex, and 'It's gonna take a lot' I'd put at vg++ (?), but happy to return if you're not happy with it. Ben PS Check out the list I put up yesterday for more of Jim's records.

This is a great record and I never hear it out. I played it at Jim Demetriou's memorial in September in a rare outing of stompers for me in honour of the great dancer. And the ballad side is AS good.

Uday Hussein?!! Really???? Is it April 1st? Bloody hell. That doesn't do much for the soul scene's PR campaign! Hang on a minute.... Eric Knowles, Bill Oddie, Dale Winton and now Uday Hussein. F*ck me, what a scene. I thought of Martin Freeman (Tim out of The Office), who's played some good soul on the radio in London and at Madam Jo Jos, but I feel it's not really worth mentioning it now. Actually right now I don't feel there's really much point in anything. -
Has Anyone Seen Paul Weller Or Marc Almond At A Soul Event?
Ben Summers replied to a topic in All About the SOUL
Well I'm shocked. You should be able to remember everything. It's not like there's been loads of them or anything. But anyway, I reckon the great man has done his bit. There are people that have come to soul music through him. And he's written a mean tune or two himself. -

Eh? But I also remember Rick, who went to live in Ireland, telling me all about the conversation he had with Paul down there one time. But you might have a point with the glasses - I never used to wear them if I was dancing as the sweat made them fall down my nose. -

Hey, don't diss Paul! What a man! What's it matter where he goes. I do remember seeing him a few times at the 100 Club, in the early 90s I think, last time with Noel Gallagher. No one took a blind bit of notice. -

Jim's brother Chris has expressed his thanks on behalf of the family to all those who attended the funeral. I think they were really taken aback by the numbers. I'll post details on here about a charity memorial do as soon as it's fixed. At the moment it's looking like a Saturday towards the end of November. -

Soulcast's Jim Demetriou Passes Away
Ben Summers replied to Amsterdam Russ's topic in All About the SOUL
Several people have expressed their regret to me today about not saying goodbye because they didn't know he was so ill. But really, he didn't know himself. It was only yesterday that his family was told that his time might have come. Before that I don't think goodbyes would have gone down too well! I've just had a long chat with Chris, Jim's brother. It sounds as if Jim was fairly out of it the last few days. Obviously we all hope things weren't too painful for him. At the very end he slipped away peacefully. The funeral will probably take place at the end of next week - at the moment Thursday is looking most likely, but that might change. It'll be near his home in Acton, I think, and everyone will be welcome. A few of us are meeting up tomorrow anyway downstairs at the Green Man by Gt Portland St., where we're playing records and where Jim should have been, so we're bound to have a tearful drink in his honour and chat about what else we might do in his memory. -
Soulcast's Jim Demetriou Passes Away
Ben Summers replied to Amsterdam Russ's topic in All About the SOUL
I saw Jim at the end of last week and he was, as usual, in incredibly good spirits. He was having good days and bad days, and when good he was always up for getting out of house and living his life, and he refused to dwell on his illness. Things seemed to take a turn for the worse at the weekend. He went into hospital, which at first seemed routine, but he must have deteriorated very rapidly. I spoke to him on Sunday and he said that he didn't have the energy to cope with visitors and it was clear that something bad was happening. He did say that the doctors were sedating him, so we can hope that his last few days weren't too painful. I don't know. He was the first friend I ever made on the soul scene. When I eventually discovered that there actually were places to go that played this wonderful music, I went along by myself and just stood and listened, in awe, and it was Jim who befriended me and I couldn't have wished for a better soul mate. Now he's gone it sounds like a bit of a cliche to say what a nice guy he was bla bla bla but I honestly think I've never met a more decent human being. As Russell said, in coming up for 20 years I don't think I ever heard him say a bad word about anyone. So long Souljer. Love ya. -
