Golden World: Locals & Outsiders Involved
Tlscapital replied to Roburt's topic in All About the SOUL
Yes the inside Carl Davis Okeh / Epic story is indeed yet to be revealed if ever. Surprised that nothing sweated out... My hint were always that Carl Davis's ambitions were at that point limited by what Okeh / Epic would provide him with. Exactly as the bigger article on Carl Davis here explains while at Okeh's. And that he clearly got at Brunswick instantly. Bringing with him his artists (not Major) to show the world how 'modernizing' their signature would sound even bigger. -

Yes, yes and yes. While I know it so specifically because of the team-up that early YET it totally escaped my memory brain cells here... While it was on the tip of my tongue all this time... Thanks for digging this one out from the lost corner in the back of my mind. Evidence. -
Many periods and moods that all had their best sides. But the one that never "tires" me is 'check yourself' from 1962

Crying Won't Help You Now - Clyde McPhatter[1965] Any Fans?
Tlscapital replied to Gotsoul's topic in All About the SOUL
A classic big city ballad cheapo amongst those into soul outside the NS realm too. With Ed Townsend comp & prod involvement it's a guarantee for 'quality' in sound. For the great singer that Clyde was this counts amongst his better soul gear IMHO. Soul materials to sing he was not given much sadly. The great weeper that he was. Better known for his Drifters early years (with great stuffs) and his later 'evergreens'. While his Club classic 'A Shot Of Rythm'N'Blues' is a stronghold Mod British classic. 'Lonely People Can't Afford To Cry' & 'Give Me One More Chance' lit the Dance Floors. 'Crying Won't Help You Now' never heard if ever out but surely it would sound 'fresh'L -

Yes indeed again Jackie Wilson's first of his sublime strings of most soulful singles on Brunswick 5300. Here the first Carl Davis, Gerald Sims & Sonny Sanders (on flip) Dream Team job on Brunswick 55299. Beat U to it -
Golden World: Locals & Outsiders Involved
Tlscapital replied to Roburt's topic in All About the SOUL
26 February 1966 indeed. Which likely means that this could have been a one shot joint venture session with some of the guys from Golden World featuring Sonny Sanders as musical director, Ronnie Savoy as co-producer and Eugene Hamilton brother of Bob and Albert as composer (also did Jackie Wlson's previous Brunswick release 'Soul Galore'). Which is clearly what 'One Monkey (Don't Stop No Show)' sounds like ; a mid sixties Brunswick New York production release. Which makes this sole LaVern Baker side an odd yet interesting release. Not sounding at all a Golden World product by any means nor to the Chicago based productions that will follow with the Jalynne / BRC deal at Brunswick. Registered under the Merrimac New-York Copyright Publishing company. All this before September (August corrected) 1966 when the first 'dream team' consisting of Sonny Sanders, Carl Davis and Gerald Sims got to get together for their well worth musically as commercially third effort and release for Brunswick with the Artistics 'I'm gonna miss you'. -

Indeed as Blackpool said Sonny Sanders worked first with Robert Bateman at Correc-Tone and its Sonbert subsidiary up to 1965 (no precise date found) ending with Yvonne Vernee last 45 'Just Like You Did Me'. Then Sonny Sanders joined Golden World by May 1965 for a string of productions up to September 1965. Before joining later Carl Davis at Brunswick to start up their brilliant and successful 'dream team' work. -

What is the best on line music App for rare soul?
Tlscapital replied to vince ayres's topic in All About the SOUL
Depends on what gear you're listening them onto but indeed they are compressed twice (digitally recorded then compressed into the mp3 format then through Mixcloud's own's pre-formatted mastering filters...) I know cause they sounded worse (muffled down mostly) then than my mp3 sounded first in comparison... To listen to them occasionally on my small blasting like 'digital home cinema like tweeter towers and sub-bass box speakers' on my lap top does sound decent for that purpose. Still not that good. But if one's planning to listen to them on their phono system likely there the playback definition won't hold up to it's promisses. -
It's indeed the whole shebang that I found rather odd (not aimed as an insult if ever - cringe !) since such 'mash-up' jobs were a sport back then (not saying it is for sure just leaving the possibility to be) so it could well be some sort of YT resurrection too as this 6 year and a half 'soulfuldetroit' link tells us... Although the high frequencies distortions in the audio has 'hairs' on some charged backing vocals passages that tend to indicate groove wear (acetate ?)...

Smelled like some hesitating AI thing to me at first. Maybe not. Weird pseudo / avatar name for a soul... First post after registering in November 2017. Odd !

Nate Adams 'Why Is It Taking So Long' Atlantic DEMO M- £75
Tlscapital posted a topic in Record Sales
Rarer Monarch West Coast pressing in stunning Mint- condition of this fab slab of Deep Soul flipped with a most decent Northern Soul Dancer. This is the better (IMHO) and first late 1967 cut of this song later recut by Tony Baxter on Gates or George Scott (only on his rare Maple LP). Scans and sound clip of both sides of the actual copy offered for sale. £75 all in. why is it taking so long.mp3 -
Stated that in my first post and second post Ken. Just being more specific on releases. My point being the switch for PLUG side with the second release for national distribution. Dakar 1452 June 1968 for local distribution AND Dakar 602 November 1968 for national distribution
-
Recently was given the book and do take some 'factual' quotes from it for facts but few others are just not thorough right. Have already pointed out few. Like that one on here where he misses the point that Dakar was first independent before being picked up by the Cotillion Group for national distribution through their pressings plants partnership. And this is crucial to realize how this record's faith came out to be significantly different a second time around. There's no mention of this first local self distributed small Dakar output in Robert Pruter's book... Knowing that Tyrone Davis 'a woman needs to be loved' for national distribution was re-pressed some 4 months later at least brings another light as to how 'can I change my mind' came to be PLUGGED by Houston, Texas Radio Dee-Jay 'Wild Child'. That without such further's 'exposition' through larger promotion and distribution would likely not have been.

A nice copy graded down to VG+ due to a scratch at the end of the record that causes few 'tics' in the last fade out and run out groove revolutions. For the rest an almost EX condition copy with few space superficial scuffs like markings. All NAP. Look and listen from actual copy offered for sale. Offers and trades considered. sheepherers.mp3

Either way you want to look at it but Tyrone Davis 'Can I Change My Mind' was on all of its USA Dakar pressings a 'B' side. In June 1968 prior being picked up by the Cotillion group for National distribution and so rereleased in November 1968 with the fantastic bluesy growler 'A Woman Needs To Be Loved' pressed as the ORIGINAL 'A' side ! Even though as soon it was re-released by the Cotillion Group the radios PLUGGED the 'Can I Change My Mind' side ! My favorite million seller soul 45 ! Most other countries pressings then followed the move to put 'Can I Change My Mind' as the 'A' side like the UK Atlantic one. Not a Million Seller as such but a big 'evergreen' classic with a similar case dating from 1962 is Wilson Picket's first solo 45 on Correctone that first had 'My Heart Belongs To You' for 'A' side with the radio's pushing 'Let Me Be Your Boy' for PLUG side making it another change of fate 'B' side swapper. Then for a real 'B' side worth mentioning here as an early early days 'cheap as chips' home spin Million Seller soul 45 is The Intruders 'Turn The Hands Of Time' on the flip of 'Cowboys To Girls'. Second in my book comes The Impressions 'My Woman's Love' on Curtom. Which for all the 'rare' sweet and deep soul lovers out there is an evident beginners 45. Flip of the 'This Is My Country' HIT side. Mind you back then the Uniques Jamaican cut I knew first.

Just read in few places that Jerrell Lee Fuller actually died July 18th and not 23rd 2024 in Sherman Oaks, California, USA from complications of lung cancer... Thought to let know in order to correct that. Cheers

What have you learnt today. Oriole label UK.
Tlscapital replied to Tobytyke's topic in All About the SOUL
The single 'the Message' was an international good seller. Their single 'the Message' was an international good seller. -
Can't say per se as I have none of the pressing variants but what is definite is that there's only one pressing plant involved for the promotional pressings but two for the stockers. The promo copies are from the same pressing plant as this stocker variant that most likely used the same masters. Unless they wanted to 'adjust' something if they were pressed after. But the second stocker here below is from the PL pressing plant that uses masters of their own. This PL pressing should sound different and might have been equalized with higher gains if ever.

Always loved this 'Double Life' 45 of his. But for both sides actually. With this very 'Righteous Brothers' alike tune only more soulful IMHO. Bless you Mister blue eyed pop crooner occasionally soulful singer. RIP +

Saw that too. What you've learned today is that this is bollocks. Don't believe the hype ! Although the Martha is musically much betterIMHO. Last EX copy on eVilbay sold for £164 with at least 3 times more past sales / auctions than Mike and the Modifiers that last sold for about £800... -
Most influential rhythm and blues records of the 1960's
Tlscapital replied to Geeselad's topic in All About the SOUL
Yes that's a solid one. That took it all to another level. As early as October 1963 ! To my ears it still sounds like a 1966 thing... So much it's ahead of its time. Indeed it specifically marked the mods in the UK but mostly and firstly Stateside it did mark the whole 'Popular' and 'R'n'B' music industry in many ways. A 'corner stone' anthem of the genre. -
Well all along my crate digger younger years I've seen plenty of these used 45's in worn out condition about. Yes all the Mediterranean other sub-genres like Cumbia, Merengue, Hi-Life and so on were also often featured on these LP's. Attesting of the migrant nature of these sub-cultures from ex-colons and slaves mixing their sounds all along. These there were the popular sounds of those ethnic Miami to New-York neighborhoods that had due to their Hispanic language less radio airplay there than that of the R'n'B classified genre and the LP's were the 'continuous' household playback muzak dishing out the not always so necessary 'Club' sounds aiming to please one and all.
