Ron Holden. Is there a Challenge stock issue ?
Tlscapital replied to Mick Holdsworth's topic in Look At Your Box
Jerry Fuller was a popular artist. Who unlike Ron could sing. So yes stock copies were evidently commercialized to satisfy this popular artist fans base. Not found of his gear leaning toward a predominantly teeny audience evidently not that soulful orientated. Even if this single attempting to 'jump' onto the 'Motown' craze did not really succeed in the USA it did for the soul freaks in the northern hemisphere of the UK... And me. -
Sure (I'll ask him) but why would an American Musicor 45 would bear such a prong center ?
-
What is that 'the import center' not pressed out for Porgy & the Monarchs ?
-
OK thanks. It was unknown to me. Preferring the reggae flip though. To each its own. For me Jamaican doing their soul stuffs is like Americans doing their ska or reggae sounds... Never fully sounded so right to my ears. With few exceptions to like (not even of the rare kind necessary) but never or so rarely to adore. When I was deep into the Jamaican stuffs most of these now supposed soul Jamaican records were not well regarded by most and barely selling whenever. And I was adventurous with all the weird things I picked to train my ears with those peanuts Jamaican related records nobody else want so not shy or opinionated. Although I always loved my 'soulful' ska, rock-steady and reggae sounds. Always preferring the Jamaicans doing their things and the Americans doing theirs. If I still can enjoy deep nitty-gritty Jamaican connoisseur DJ spots, like on a 'blues' night, a MOR 'classic' ska & reggae fan DJ selection will bore me instantly. Like a Northern Soul DJ filling a spot gap with such Jamaican sounds at a soul nights with predictable Jamaican sounds is just depressing to me. The other way around the same IMHO. Both will inevitably 'surf' on the surface of what these sounds have most "accessible" to a broad crowd. Which is not what I'm in for.

GOT-CHA' MAKIN' LOVE TO YA' Pts 1 & 2 - Info Please
Tlscapital replied to Swifty's topic in Look At Your Box
Can't say really. £50+ up to £100 I'd believe by today. Prices in the UK didn't seem to matter from old sale's lists but maybe other 'deep disco' markets more inclined for one or the other might suggests otherwise by now. -

Only have my styrene Sterling RN-101 copy and know that the other pressing plant press on vinyl do exists on Sterling B-45-2841 and bares a slightly different shorter take of the tune. This second dishes out a more 'beefed up' recording with extra layers of vocals and instruments (mess) that I don't dig. Here below find first the styrene and then below the vinyl version... -
Motown Album Tracks Worthy Of A 45 Release In 2024
Tlscapital replied to Happy Feet's topic in All About the SOUL
Save a breath ; what it's commonly loved by us is the 7" format ! 45rpm better but 33 can be acceptable sometimes. Aimed for diner's Juke Boxes those 6 tracks mastering are disappointing when played on proper home phono gear IME. But they're cute. Low in gain and thin on bass (low and mid frequency response are weakened for the highs to take over) begging to press up volume to not so good playback quality. On DJ sound system playback quality is often mediocre enough not to disadvantage those too much through filters. -

Freddie Scott's original version is simply Magistral though... Only not Motown. -
The Age of Bronze on Guava 103 'B' side flip 'I'm in love' is also featured on Guava 101 original's 'A' side credited as to the Turbulations. FWIW which to my ears insidiously borrows some melody 'riffs' of Larry Sanders 'im in love'... Coincidence only maybe within a year gap.

You're right it doesn't exist. Trolls of the day. Purpose ? To have an affordable 'infatuation' glory moment Ever met some of these shady past characters having a go at it claiming with a big smile that's them ? I did occasionally Dee-Jay's cover-ups sent legions of "gold diggers" in vein quests that some decided to fool-play with. Who's the fool ?

Ron Holden. Is there a Challenge stock issue ?
Tlscapital replied to Mick Holdsworth's topic in Look At Your Box
The 'X' file factor... Nobody has answered it because nobody on here has seen one yet. The proof in such case can only be delivered by bringing one. No body, no murder case. It doesn't mean that there is no murder. It only means that there's no case. RobbK's explanation aimed to point out (subjectively too) as to why maybe the record never got beyond the promotional stage due to Ron Holden's poor vocal performance. And that even radios dee-jays were not keen to push it up. If it was up to him the same. -
Thanks for confirming the humble nature of Sire Dennis Anderson. As with all my most TOP beloved tunes whose authentic and humble yet articulate vocal performance they never fail to ressemble the real good personality characters these singers turn out to be in the end. And this Anderson Brothers 'I can see him loving you' is one of those. Their classy singing of the most painful heartbreak tale that was on first hear echoing vividly my own then still grieving worst scared thoughts... It worked on me to full effect. It still does to this day.

Yes I know that it's a proper inside job well done but on such a dull white label with bold typos and no nothings sexy about it but it's sole rare factor that some go for but of no interest to me. So I get that others go for it just because it's rare. Reading of it from lists then seeing it was a major let down for my expectation...

Soul and then some... The Originals at their most soulful***** -
Sure but the 'X' file factor must leave the other to think that you're into 'conspiracy' theories... So rare it is. Or a scam. Old school UK collector myths like the Volumes on Pama (only poor quality photocopies in old fanzines... Hot Cinnamon (Joe & George on Now) 'no one loves you' on S.O.S. on a one off boot maybe... ? What's the score today on Tommy Tate 'if you gotta to love somebody' on Koko with supposedly 2 'legit' 7" copies known to exist ?
-
Sam Williams on Tower issue. Think it was said to exist but nothing ever showed up to attest of it Nolan Chance on Bunky (white label vinyl press) looked like a seventies vanity press to me (small batch made for him if I remember correctly) so of no real historical interest IMHO. Once a Manship auction item...

My 2 cents. Sorry if I come a bit 'negative' but such is my own experience of it. Not a Londoner so indeed I can't relate to such an experience and born only in 1970 when the world had change by then and so did the scenes too. Still I read some about it and get the thing and picture what it was made of and what was 'fresh' as 'rooted' with it. Coming from the Jamaican side of music things I always preferred the fully segregated sounds for 100% in-deep immersion of rare, in vogue and connoisseur sounds. This applies for my soul nights as well. Although I always enjoyed the lighter social gatherings of such 'soul & ska' social nights playing mostly 'easy' and 'accessible' sounds. On the 'rare' soul and northern soul scene I always found the bits of "Jamaican" imported sounds at those do's mostly not to my liking. Often records I even use to diss when I was into the Jamaican sounds. The first time I endured that I was in awe. Found it a poor 'alternative' in sing-a-long and danceable sounds. With 'rare soul' tag priced on them My (not only mine) best experience in 'mixing' both in one night was on boat (that remained on the docks) with the upstairs room dedicated to 'soul' dee-jays and the 'basement' for Jamaican sounds. Both dishing out great sounds from humble and less humble collectors for a catchy and rare sounds mixture that thrilled all those who attended.

Younghearts - Nashville Matrix - original or boot ?
Tlscapital replied to Chris L's topic in Look At Your Box
Three pressing plants involved. First pressed at monarch (styrene) titled 'little togetherness' then re-pressed 'A little togetherness'. Those Monarch pressings got at least 5 pressing variants between the promo, both titles variants, one artists name variation as The Tempos and a production change of position on the label... Indicating as many runs of pressing batches all along as the demand was growing or revived... But how long ? One year ? To farther involving two other pressing plant (Best Way and yours) for two vinyl issues variants. Yours is this one that was copied to be booted. Only yours is the real thing that is amongst other things machined stamp. -

Not OG version and exists as a 45 Still if one was to consider it being better if ever it would be in another thread or forum even LOL Joke aside with all due respect to each its own evidently but this Tempts period although troubled some for the group with a hectic David is my favorite one. So I am partial too -

Although I love the Van Dykes (have their Bell LP too) I never could dig their rendition of this Temptations fabulous track from their best LP too... While most of the dancer tunes on this Tempts LP made it on 45 this one not and what a tune this is ! Every home should have one !- 99 comments

Two in One ; the Rotations 'trying to make you my own' rather singular singing stil resonates in my head as to what other tune it reminds me off... To link it to a specific singer if ever... Suddenly Charles Lamont and the Extremes 'I Got to Keep Movin'' on Challenge came up as contender worth checking... If ever it could be a comparative contender. And well... Digging further into it on another 'recent' theory raised on 45cat.com about Charles Lamont being in the most dis-believable way IMHO one and the same as Johnny Olenn & the Extremes on Dee Gee and Entree.. it begged for further exploration. Especially as Johnny Olenn is a well known Rock'n'Roll figure, His version of 'keep on movin'' is nothing like the Charles Lamont one although the same song but most of all the singing is not at all the same and Johnny Olenn's singing never a match. Plus he is not black nor impressing to sing like one ! So I questioned the OP theory directly on 45cat.com proposing that them both Johnny and Charles were one and the same singer. Even if both Johnny and Charles singles were backed by the Extremes which was an old formation of Charles Ingersoll and Bobby sanders from their school days. FWIW the Johnny Olenn's cut was registered under the 'Symbol' Buck ram copyright company in November 1964 but without real trace of release or radio 'air play' charts to attest of it's date of release while the Charles Lamont is 4 Star Sales Co. & Lenoir one by March 1965 has it's Monarch matrix Δ 56753 ! Charles Ingersoll the composer (being the link) in my guess could be Charles Lamont (alias) real name. So Charles Ingersoll could have proposed this composition of his first to Buck Ram proprietor of Dee Gee and Entree records who then got Johnny Olenn & the Expressions to sing it and released first if ever. Thereafter Charles Ingersoll could have cut another deal with old friend Bobby Sanders to sing and release it on Challenge backed with another of his composition 'Doin Mickey's jerk'. Introducing Charles Ingersoll to Bobby Sanders future projects on his Soultown stable and the later Canterbury & Minit ventures. There and then Charles Ingersoll would soon become a one time member of the Younghearts and so also maybe of the L.A. Tempos for example. And if that is him (maybe only once again) he could then be the one singing on their side 'Sad Sad Memories' released on Soultown or Canterbury... thoughts anyone ?

I'm no specialist of UK gear but I noticed that too. But what an odd thing to stuck on an EMI acetate label on a single sided vinyl test press then ? Or was that a common UK EMI practice ? Some of the French pre-releases 45's made from UK EMI & Co. 45's were occasionally solid center single sided too FWIW... What is the machined Matrix of the TMG ? To compare could maybe tell us something. Then I was also surprised by the glue smudge over the 'crinkled' outer label ring that could indicate some DIY amateur job... But that would prove to be a lot of fuss for a rather common record. But like sewing patches and all required a lot of time from those who did have more time for their passion than they had money. I know I did. Although I never 'dressed' my records. Too much respect for that.
