  1. Everyone has a view. A lot of them make a mockery of what rhe scene should be about.
  2. How is it double standards? Just pointing out the bloody odvious. I always thought the soul scene was a cool underground movement. Not a tombola style dj policy of getting young djs with nothing to offer bar youth.
  3. CALLING ALL YOUNG COLLECTORS..... Me and my mates all started our own nights and they all did well. I look at those lads now and most of them are playing all ovet Europe and running respected nights. None of them dj'd at other peoples nights. They made their own way and did it right. The sucess was deserved through a good ear and imagination. If you play shit that every other clown plays then you'll fail. Stand out from the crowd a bit and dare to be different. That will get you noticed and respected.
  4. This thread is crackers. If you collect records and have aspirations to dj then be a bit creative about it. Don't be rattling off your top 20 tunes on a forum in the hope of getting a spot. That really does take all the romance out of it. Not everyone gets to dj. Wait to get asked. If you don't get asked then tough shit. Start your own night or get a collective going. Why don't people use a bit of imagination. How fucking uninspiring and pointless this entire thread is.
  5. I suppose the oldies scene is a totally different animal and originality isn't as important as keeping the punters happy with what they want to hear. Totally different to the rare scene where originality is usually, not always but usually, important. Suppose I'm just a sucker for a proper leftfield dj. Other people like the same tunes week in week out. Difficult to try and debate this with so many diffetent views.
  6. But surely you're just then playing what others want to hear rather than what you like? Why would an aspiring dj ever get booked based on those values?
  7. Pete, For me, djing is an art. It's an extension of who you are. It's also a real privilege to be asked to play records out. I hate seeing it done badly. Why follow the crowd? if you collect oldies then great - but at least play with a bit of imagination. Absolutely no point copying anyone. That's the main issue for me with the soul scene. Such a remarkable lack of originality. Very few people have the balls to do their own thing.
  8. But what makes him different to every other local do dj?
  9. Jordan, no disrespect mate but that kind of playlist is about as old hat as you can possibly get. Ditch copying the northern soul playlists from average clubs in the 70's and open your ears. Do the young collectors out there aspire to be djing to their Dad's mates down the local conservative club, or do they want to be playing to people their own age in a decent club? I think of lot of the alleged young soul dj's fancy the con club.
  10. Rare modern soul that is destined to become massive. ex condition £100 Please PM if interested.
  11. Great tune that sold for £175 on here not that long ago. Ex copy £85 - absolute bargain https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=RvR4QVV2GZQ
  12. Some do, some don't. Me and my mates all did it the right way, but equally, I remember seeing a few mother and son duo's that did it the wrong way. I have no issues with younger people enjoying the big ballroom all nighters that play the big 60's oldies, as these songs are great and It's what got me into the music and collecting. But over time you move on musically, that's the important thing. I bet there are young kids going through that transition now, and also those that will never move on from such events. As long as they dig the music then that's all that matters. But for the life of me, I really can't see why any young person would embrace the bags and vest look. It blows my mind even trying to work that one out. Also worth remembering that quite a lot of people are on the soul scene for reasons other than soul music. Lot's of people that feel they can fit in on such a scene, but aren't really sure what it's all about. Also lots of drug addicts that can continue the party lifestyle.
  13. *Deletes soul source account, sighs heavily, puts on some boogie funk and gets back in his box*
  14. Adam Maxwell is the new face of northern soul.
  15. Sounds like the public has lost faith in adam maxwell. It was only a matter of time.
  16. Very rare modern soul record that would appeal to the forward thinking collectors out there. Ex condition but has slight label damage where address has been scratched out. Sounds a lot worse than it is. Can provide picture if required. £85 Please PM if interested. Paul
  17. Maxwell flogging boots yet again.
  18. Facebook is a great way to befriend all the people that run events, like all their record links and event listings, make pointless comments about how you're going to check out the next one - even though there's no chance you are, and then send them a few personal messages until they give you a gig. Drives me mad to be honest and now I rarely go on there unless I'm selling records. People come accross very badly on facebook. Lots of desperate people trying to make a name for themselves. Notice how most (not all, but most) of the good guys aren't on there telling the world how good they are? Can't respect the Facebook dj's one bit. What happened to an underground scene that gave gigs to dj's based on merit? Does that still exist? I hope so but I'm not so sure at times. Soul source is a site that soul fans visit for various reasons. Facebook is a virtual world that people spend far too much time on and now the soul scene has become embedded in it. Not a good thing if you ask me. Maybe people want to start living life a bit and not looking at a strangers holiday snaps. One of my pet hates. Very rarely get drawn into debates on here, but can't resist with this one!! Anyway, Soul Source is a fantastic site that I use every day and really hope that it keeps going for many more years. Well done to Mike and all the mods. Ta Paulo Barker
