  1. Me too father. One for me and another 3 for the lads. Looks like you're going to be a busy lad!
  2. No thanks, i'm driving!
  3. Happy mondays black grape massive attack dj shadow primal scream the boss stephen fretwell Thats about it these days. Used to love so many bands but now I tend to think they are a bit crap. As for new music, HA, forget it. When i hear people rant and rave about bands like kaiser chiefs and arctic monkeys I just smile to myself and think "they have no idea....."
  4. I told them that the door staff wouldn't let anyone out of the building but they said it was nothing to do with them. The venue had hired them. Im not the biggest fan of door staff but these two were real muppets. It was like being in a scally club in town. They were giving plenty and almost wanting me to kick off. All i wanted was to pop to the cashy and another bloke wanted to put a couple of records in the car. They were total arseholes and someone needs to make sure they aren't on next time.
  5. I tried to pop out to get some cash and was told that i would have to queue to get back in. I explained that id paid my money and got there early so why would i have to queue to get back in. She said that it wasn't fair on the people outside!!! S basically if anyone is waiting to get in then noone else can leave the building. They were two of the biggest morons ive ever met. I told them they weren't right in the head and they tried to throw me out so i legged it back up stairs with my tail stuck firmly between my legs. Seriously though, who were these numpty's and why were they giving it the big i am. This incident really put me off going back to prestwich again, which is a shame because it was a good night.
  6. Just stumbled upon this snippet from an ian brown interview....... "No, I didn't want to be in a group! I was more interested in going off on my motor scooter to Northern Soul all-nighters. In Manchester, you couldn't avoid Northern Soul. Also, I did karate from 11 to 18. Aged 14, I was teaching it at weekends to grown men. I wanted my own karate school. But John's getting good now on guitar. He'd formed a group called The Waterfront with Andy Couzens (later of The High) on rhythm guitar, Mani on bass, a kid called Kaiser singing, and Chris on drums. John kept pestering me to sing and, in the end, I went to rehearsals with me and this Kaiser kid singing. We called ourselves The Patrol. We had a song called 'Come On'. 'Come Aaaaann!'. We played a few youth clubs but I didn't really get anything off it." "Anyway, later I'm at this party in Hulme... my mate's roadie-ing at Salford University, and he brings Geno Washington down to this party. An' he's a superstar kind of guy, big personality, all over the room. He comes up to me and he says 'You're a star. You're an actor. Be a singer.' I remember him on the street smoking a big spliff and this copper comes round sayin' 'What are you doing?'. And he's blowing his spliff in the copper's face, this is '83. And he's goin' 'I'm Geno, man. GENO GENO!", singing the Dexy's song, really cool. And the copper didn't do nothing, he just walked away. A few weeks later, I'm thinking about what this guy's said. What does he mean I'm a star, an actor? Anyway, I thought we'd give it a go so we kicked Kaiser out and started the real thing, The Stone Roses, in March '84."
  7. when i feel the need - unbelievable I cant get enough - pure stomper heartaches away - fantastic, gets better every listen.
  8. Thats tickled me mate
  9. I was always into the indie scene, stone roses, happy mondays, primal scream, etc....but became very bored with listening to the same albums over and over. The guy at my local record shop was always giving me different albums to listen to but I couldn't seem to find what I was looking for , a different sound. My dad is bang into the soul music and I've heard northern and motown all my life so a few years ago I asked for a few northern cd's. I played these all christmas day and songs Id heard and qite liked popped up - judy street, jimmy clarke, dean parrish and I was a happy chappy with my new tunes going out and buying more cd's. Then something strange happened. I was in my first year at uni and led in bed one night and listening to a new cd Id bought and Bobby Paris - I walked away came on. I cant explain the feeling I got when I heard that tune but it literally changed my life. I then discovered that there was an all nighter in manchester at the CIS and the rest is history. I will always be thankfull to my Dad for those 3 cd's, Steve Cato for introducing me to the nighter scene, Chris Waterman for looking after me when I was skint and especially to Sharron (reg) for giving me and matty lifts every week to all these different venue's. To these people, thank you
  10. firstly its got to be the dancing. Secondly, that feeling when you hear a new tune and think "dear god whats that....." Thirdly, the thought of going into a town centre at the weekend into a normal club fills me with dread. Piss heads, birds falling all over the show, fighting and music that can only be described as dog shit. No thank you very much, ill keep to the soul.
  11. deep dark secret - dee dee sharpe
  12. One of my faves this one pete. I remember listening to this on my walkman when i was a nipper. I always remebered it but could never describe it in later years to my dad. Recently got it on british soul vol 1. Quality tune Does this ever get played out. Id love to hear it.
  13. I cant bloody wait till smoking is banned in clubs and pubs. Why should I have to suffer because smokers believe its their right to smoke in public places. And comparing smoking to drinking is just silly. I spent a weekend in dublin not too long ago and it was so nice to enter a pub and not come out stinking of fags. My friends that smoke didn't mind nipping outside for a fag so everyone was happy. Lets face it, smoking is a dirty habbit and I personally dont think its fair that I should have to inhale that shite all night long when all it takes is a smoker to nip outside for 2 mins.
  14. The fred perry shop in manchester always has loads of northern on. I think that they once had a few dj's on too?
  15. Aye, none of that when you were a lad eh dave Ill have a look at that mate.
  16. Cheers Rach that would be top!
  17. That bloody Higgins with his negative attitudes. I've got a good mind to bang an official complaint in!
  18. No, you were quite well behaved. Do you remember telling my mate matty he looked like an 11 year old Kosovan . You also emphasised that under no circumstances could you three afford to be caught with an 11 year old Kosovan. It was an amusing journey!
  19. Alright Brett. The point is that I dont want to hear the top 100 tunes, but I want to hear what other people are listening too at the moment. It would be like asking you to do me a compilation which I can then listen to in the car Im not after being brainwashed into a wiganite just curious to hear some recommended tunes off soul fans.
  20. Can everyone give me a list of their top 10 rare soul tunes. I want to make a quality playlist from the 6000+ northern tunes i have on my mp3 player. I want to get into some fresh rarer stuff so no obvious ones please. Cheers!
  21. Think ill stop going when the dance floor becomes dotted in patches of piss. Ill finally have to except that a younger crowd aren't going to get into it then.
  22. When do you personally think it will be time to call it a day on the scene. In 10 years time a few of you old gets will be nearly 60 . Do you think all nighters will be be an option then or will the time come to pick up the snooker cue and head for the club. Surly dancing all night at that age will prob not be the best idea unless promoters have bouncers and st johns ambulance crew ready! Is northern soul something you can just give up? title amended. Shane
  23. Totally disagree Dan. I took five lads down to the birmingham all niter a couple of weeks ago and up until 6 months ago none of them had even heard of northern soul. They all love it now and two of them are now on the scene. Yes you can have a late drink elsewhere these days and yes you can play on the latest computer games or watch sky sports, but does this really change the pulling power of the music. Not having a go at you Dan but i cant stand the attitude that some people have towards the future of the music. Why are scenes dead? The music sounds just as good to my ears when i hear new tracks as it did to the lads down wigan/wheel when it all started. The problem is that no bugger can get on the scene without being introduced by a soulie. I'm 24 and i dread the thought of there being no niters in 10 years. I have no doubt that the scene could be filled with a younger crowd, just like europe, if promoters would make the effort to promote to get the flyers out to these people. Rant over!
  24. What can i say, i'm a bird magnet mate!!!!
  25. I always wonder about her too. How does she get to events and who does she go with? She's always totally out of it.
