Sorry to hear this guys. Your nights at the CIS were what got me and the lads into the music. It totally changed our lives and now we have our own night running. Without you two I would never have met half the guys I know on the scene and life would be very different for me. And may I add that Chris used to let me into his nights for free cos I was a young lad with no money and he looked after me from the start cos he knew how much I loved it. I will never ever forget the first time I walked into the main room at the CIS. It was my first nighter and a really special moment for me. Then I met Steve Cato and it all went down hill!!!! Maybe we'll see you both down Beat Boutique one month and you can see how far we've come from the spotty faces students that used to frequent your night. Paul B aka the student (even though I'm 26 and getting married next month they still call me that)

From what I've heard John told Liam he knew someone and John gave him the phone number. Jill got paid for it, as did everyone else. I didn't get any money as I wasn't in the video. It was Paul Walker not me. There's a few girls that could have been asked but Danielle was recommended early doors. It wasn't a case of they couldn't find anyone. Anyway its nothing to do with me really. Not after falling out with anyone. I thought the video was really good. If an artist decides to do something like this then whether you like it or not you would want it to be done well. Almost all of them are on the scene and very good dancers in my opinion. The entire performance was shaped around the dancers and it worked very well. But we all like a good slagging of this kind of thing don't we. -

Yes Liam credit where credits due!! I "supplied" my girlfiend for this show. And where's my thanks? Paul, not being funny mate but I know how much time and effort Liam has put into this and all you've done is pass on a phone number. I don't believe that entitles you to any credit really. -
It doesn't get me down mate. I just find it really disappointing how unsupportive some peoople can be.

Half the people on here think they own this music. Well you don't. And guess what? Three young lads feel that their time has come and they're going to put thier spin on 'northern soul' and see what happens. If anyone doesn't like that then you can shove whatever negative comments you have up your arse cos we don't care and WE DON'T NEED YOU!!!!!!!! Signing out..........

Right, I will try to explain once more what we are doing. We are trying to get a night going that plays a mixture of soul music for a varied crowd. Other nights have done this before such as Brighton Beach, move on up, funkademia, etc but we are doing it a bit different in the sense that we aren't playing crowd pleasers such as obvious motown and obvious northern. We aren't playing tracks that most people wont be familiar with. We are trying to get people into rare soul music. We want to do this with a younger crowd. We have nothing against the soul crowd but we feel that we need to do this seperate to the soul scene. We AREN'T getting a room full of students or people after a cheap beer. If you ask anybody thats been they will tell you that most of the people there were into the music on some level. Maybe they are new to the mod scene or have heard a few tracks off the tv and thought 'this isn't bad' so they've turned up. But most were genuine soul fans that were young and really embraced the fact that this night was going. We've had 'proper' young soul fans from newcastle, leeds, sheffield, liverpool all travelling for our night. And a lot of them collect records and want to play at our night. And we will get every one of them on!!! There are loads of nights like ours over Europe where the average age is 20-30. So why can't we do the same over here, especially in a city thats got such strong musical foundations. Why does everyone think that this can't be done and its going to be filled with a fickle crowd only here till the next thing comes along. Thats total bollocks. There's loads of young people into this music but where can they go to hear it???? Nowhere bloody plays it. We don't want a room full of people in their 40's and 50's. Now I'm sorry if that upsets some of you but its the truth. That scene already exists and is done a lot better than we could ever do. We don't want the politics. We don't want the face pulling when a certain record is played. We are trying to give our night a fresh approach and do something new!!!!!! You won't see any big name dj's at our night. Whats the point?? They play at every night going. What you will see is us giving people a chance and letting them play despite the fact that they don't have loads of expensive records. There's nothing better than seeing someone put a really nice set together from a very modest box. But you can see how much those tunes mean to them. There's no skill in having 1000's of records to choose from and playing 30 from the top 500!!! I love the northern soul scene. The music has made me the person I am. But we feel that something has to be done to keep the music alive. Young people will not join the northern soul scene. That is a fact. Its an already established scene that is suited to an older crowd. No matter how much you moan about my comments its the truth. I could go on forever trying to explain myself but I just cant be arsed. And if you don't like it then fine. It really doesn't bother me. The people on here aren't important to our night. The impotant thing is that there's thre of us promoting it and we really care about the music. So much so that we slog our guts out to get other young people into it so that the music lives on. The one thing that really pisses me off and insults me also is the view that its a fad. If its such a fad then why are you lot still listening to the music 30 years later.

Rod, you have left me speechless. I just can't see where this outlandish attack has come from. Its the sort of reaction I'd expect from someone if I shit on their front step and then pleasantly knocked on the door to inform them of what I'd done. I'm sort of getting the impression that you have taken a real dislike to me!!?? The fat guy in baggies comment was tounge in cheek. I have no problem with fat people or baggy pants. Some of my best friends are fat. Really fat. I would hate to think that I'm being tagged as fattist. I can almost picture you waving your pitch fork in the air fueled with rage at the thought of a youngster having the cheek to simply state facts about the northern soul scene. I'd put my life on the fact that most young soul fans would much rather attend a night in a city centre venue with other young people than in a typical northern venue with a northern crowd. What is it exactly that you have a problem with. If its the comment about fat people and baggy pants then I apologise for my comments. I didn't realise you were such a sensitive soul.
-
Rod are you for real? You just seem to be picking at anything you can now. Woolie Mark, I was refering to various negative comments I have come across on this site regarding young soul fans and their various achievments which have been met with often negative criticism. Jayne, I think you make a good point about younger dj's being overlooked for the big nights. I think that promoters should give them a chance because this will encourage more young people to turn up to these events if they can see others involved. Maybe thats for another thread though.

Look, we are trying to keep the music going which is more than most are doing. I've not once slagged anything about the scene just stressing that there needs to be a fresh approach in order to encourage a younger crowd. We don't want to be the 'cool' kids of the week. We want to gat a sucessful club going filled with soul music lovers. I admire the old guys for keeping their scene going all these years. It shows a real passion and commitment and I'll always love going to nighters. But it will always belong to an older audience because if we're being truthful, noone wants an influx of young people. Noone wants to take the time needed to show them what the craic is. Noone wants to tolerate a few drinks on the dance floor. So we're just trying to put on our own night and hope that we get a nice monthly crowd of people who appreciate what we're trying to do and stick by us. Why do people on here feel the need to knock anything that the younger soul crowd try to do. If they dance in a video then its shit. If they put a night on then the only reason they're doing it is to be 'cool' and its never going to work. There's a lot more young people into this music than people realise and there's definitely enough to keep a few good nights going throughout the country. Just because they don't attend the nights you lot attend it doesn't mean they don't exist. We just want to do our own thing with people our own age in an environment that suits us a bit more. Is that so wrong. Knowing people on here the answer is probably yes.
-
Alright Barry, I was the lad mentioning the baggy pants and that. It was just an off the wall comment really. The point i was trying to make was that for the music to go forward and attract a younger crowd then they need to have their own club to listen to the music that is filled with people their own age. Everytime northern soul is mentioned on tv then straight away its cue footage of fat man with baggy pants on. I was just saying that there's more to the music and the scene than that. And really I was trying to get accross the fact that there's big potential to get a cool night going with good music and nicely dressed young folk. But one of the problems in this country is that northern soul is thought of as an old persons scene and young people won't really give it a chance in its current format, ie in some working mens club with people their Dads age dancing about. I personally have no problem with these nights but it would put others off.

As long as you don't go falling face first into anything Dave then I'm sure you'd be welcome!!!!!

Yeah the clip on here is the lunchtime edition clip that they showed. Its totally different to the tea time version and not as good. We were happy with what they did really. Its all good publicity and hopefully we'll get a few more in next month.

The only way that you will get young people into the music is if you give them their own club with people their own age. We run a monthly night, Beat Boutique in Manchester, and the first one was rammed with young people who like soul music. If we were to take these people to an all nighter then they probably wouldn't enjoy it because a) its too intimidating, the age of the people there would probably put them off. You will only get the obsessive types turning out every week who go for the love of the music rather than a night out with their mates. These people are few and far between unforunately. We hope to take all the positives from the soul scene and take them to a younger audience that will appreciate it. Ckeck out the pictures of our first night by clicking the link below. You will see that there is hope yet!!! https://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=1916...1311&ref=mf
