Dj Greg Belson European Tour - May - June 2013
Paulb commented on Greg Belson's article in Event News
No idea of track or artist name, but it's a real bobby dazzler of a tune. -
A great night of music all round, Peter.

Wow. The Charles Bradley doc was one of the most inspirational and uplifting things I've ever seen. Saw the guy play live in Manchester last year but didn't really get just how much it actually meant to hom until seeing that. A real soul legend.
-
Bob on mate. Completely summed it up there for me.

I think this topic shows that the soul scene is a funny old thing. Kind of ridiculous in a way. Everyone grouped in together under the banner of northern soul. So many strong opinions about what is acceptable and what's not. I've read some extremely intelligent and well thought out posts and they are instantly dismissed by others as shite. Everyone has their own take on what the scene stands for. I suppose the passion is what keeps us all under this crazy tag line of northern soul.

Len, I agree with what you've just said. And just for the record, I love 60s and oldies. As Mik stated, you can't beat it. But I do enjoy other kinds of soul music that is often sneered at by alleged soul lovers. That's what I find frustrating.

Anyone heard the album womack did with damon albarn? Any good?
-
Les mccann - what a voice. Voices of east harlem were unreal too.

The soul scene is no longer a musical movement. It's lost a lot of the progressive djs that were playing main rooms years ago. I think that current playlists back this up. I can't accept and embrace that. I'd sooner not attend venues than just make do with what's available. Mik, I do agree with what you're saying regarding the funk scene. But those guys are the only ones pushing things musically. Lots of disco and boogie things getting played and all definitely soulful. Tunes that would cross over onto the soul scene if these guys were involved in any of the current upfront venues. Sadot, heard and trouble really gave the scene a new direction but they are no longer playing and noone else has taken the baton. Guys like Butch and Mick H are great but I bet they feel restrained. We are blessed in Manchester. A good dozen exciting djs playing small cellar clubs and also at Dulcimer most weekends.

Mike, not having a pop at anyone. Just giving my opinion mate. Sorry if you don't like it but I've as much right to voice it on here as anyone else. The soul scene has had its day. Its a nostalgia thing at best. 8 million events on every week and a severe lack of quality from the majority of those. You've got people saying they don't like this and don't like that. They need to be prepared to come up against criticism when making such bold statements. But this attitude is the norm. I went to the 100 club last month and it was dissapointing. I wont be going to another all nighter again. No offense to anyone, but this scene grabbed me as a 21 year old lad and excited me beyond belief. I went to nighters every week for the best part of 6 yrs so I think I qualify to give my opinion. I see the scene as a safe bet social outing where tracks are very slowly accepted and then filtered down the ranks. The likes of paul sadot, karl heard and james trouble were playing current nighter spins 8 years ago. The soul scene is way behind when it comes to current sounds. Not sure why I'm even bothering getting involved with this thread. Very few people accept that soul music is anything other than 60's northern. It's a battle I can never win and all opinions like mine do is get peoples back up. Keep the faith, etc, etc....

All the exciting djs aren't playing on the soul scene. They are playing at little hidden away nights that aren't promoted on here because most people don't want to know. The soul scene, ironically, doesn't embrace soul music unless it falls into the accepted genres dictated by the same old djs. Soul music continues to excite, expand and evolve and always will. But unfortunately that is no longer happening on traditional soul scene.

Dj Greg Belson European Tour - May - June 2013
Paulb commented on Greg Belson's article in Event News
One wild weekend indeed with the Belsonator. Greg played Family Affair last Saturday and delivered a fantastic set of gospel funk, soul and funk and had the place rocking. His Rev Robert Francis cover up nearly took the roof off! A great dj and a jolly good chap too. Be sure to check him out at his remaining uk dates. One of the few djs that are genuinely playing something fresh and exciting. -

Thanks for the playlist and kind words Jordi. We've been doing the night a few years now. Had some fantastic guests on and tbe calibre of music is always high. If you want to hear a broad selection of rare soul in a great venue then come and check us out. Myself and maxwell do our thing at Family Affair without much soulie interest but I do believe we're playing stuff as good as you'll hear anywhere. Next one is may 25th and we have Greg Belson on as guest. We're also playing the next day in the freestyle room at the York all dayer if anyone is over for that. Maybe we'll see a few new faces over the coming months. -
Ex copy of this fantastic 70's dancer. £45

Dj's I Would Love To See Back Behind The Decks
Paulb replied to Russ Vickers's topic in All About the SOUL
We've had some amazing dj's play at Famiy Affair over the past few years. Pat Bleasdale Johnny Beggs Val Jordi and Dave Ripolles Brett Franklin Phil Wainwright All playing exciting stuff and not afraid to venture away from what's expected. Playing from the heart and having confidence in your records is what it's all about. I'd rather here the dj's listed above play a set of tunes I don't know but excite me rather than the same old same old playing popular records. -
